While beginning college represents a next step to emerging adulthood and independence, the college transition has also been associated with increased emotional and social stress for first-year college students. The current study sought to examine the nature of freshmen college students' emotional and social adjustment throughout the first semester of college. Additionally, significant life events are believed to activate one's attachment system to others. Given that students form important attachments to parents, and particularly to mothers, much earlier in life than to peers or romantic partners, the study examined the degree to which college freshmen's attachment and disclosure to their mothers predicts their adjustment during the college transition throughout the first semester. Four latent classes were found for both freshman students' emotional adjustment and students' social adjustment during the first semester of college. Freshmen college students' avoidant attachment to mother was found to be a significant predictor of students' membership into emotional and social adjustment trajectories. Further, higher levels of students' avoidant attachment to mother were associated with higher odds of students' membership in less well favorable social and emotional adjustment trajectories (i.e., low or decreasing adjustment trajectories). Attachment anxiety to mother, however, was not a significant predictor of emotional or social adjustment classes. Self-disclosure to mother was not found to be a significant predictor of emotional or social adjustment trajectories, though freshman students' experience of stress was a significant predictor for both emotional and social adjustment classes. Overall, findings of this study suggest that students' experience of stress and attachment avoidance are critical factors in predicting those students who are at higher risk for poorer emotional and social adjustment. Results of this study are helpful to both high school- and university-level service providers who work with students who are preparing for or are experiencing a transition to college. Screening incoming college students for elevated levels of attachment avoidance and stress may allow mental health providers to identify students who are at increased risk for experiencing challenges adjusting to college early. Additionally, the study findings have implications for preventative interventions for high school students who plan to transition to college. Based on this study's findings, interventions that target students' avoidant attachment to mother and students' experience of stress may decrease the likelihood that students experience poor adjustment growth trajectories during the transition to college.

Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION AND REVIEW OF LITERATURE Emotional and behavior problems among adolescents are increasing all over the world at a rapid rate (Polaha, Dalton, & Allen, 2011). This worldwide trend is observed in India as well (Agarwal, 2018). Earlier, adolescents were limited to petty offences and were not often engaged in violation of law but nowadays they are committing heinous crime. According to data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB, 2016), juvenile crimes registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) found to be 35,849 cases. Specifically, Delhi metropolitan city reported 1969 cases in 2014 which rose to 2499 cases in 2016. The most famous "Nirbhaya case" of 16 December 2012, the Delhi gangrape of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student who later died was committed by juvenile only. The Juvenile Justice Board (Delhi, India) agreed the juvenile convict in this case was the most brutal. Recently, a 16 year old juvenile murdered a 7-year -old child in school premises because he wanted to postpone the parent teacher meeting. A particular group who is at risk of developing emotional and behavioral problems seems to be adolescents because adolescence is a peak age of emergence for various emotional and behavioral problems (Paus, Keshavan, & Giedd, 2008). Additionally, it has been considered as "Stress and Storm" by Stanley Hall (1904) who first coined this term. Adolescence has been defined as a transition phase from childhood to adulthood which involves multidimensional process such as biological, cognitive, social and emotional changes (Crone, & Dahl, 2012; Steinberg, & Morris, 2001). Due to such changes, adolescents are more at risk of developing emotional and behavioral problems. Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, conduct disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, depression, anxiety disorder, somatic symptom disorder are most prevalent during adolescence. Most emotional and behavioral problems emerge during childhood or adolescence and face repercussions in normal functioning such as academic, social or other important areas of functioning and tend to continue into adulthood (Hofstra, Van Der Ende, & Verhulst, 2001).
