Book excerpt: Then in the second stage of this research, I use the transformed likelihood of college enrollment, a statistical artifact, as the behavior variable in the co-evolution model to examine how the likelihood of college enrollment affect the friendship selection and in turn friend's average likelihood of college enrollment in the network influences an adolescent's own likelihood of college enrollment. In the first stage, I find that there are some levels of gender, race/ethnicity, and SES inequalities in the college enrollment, even after controlling for previous academic achievement, other individual characteristics, family backgrounds, and school level variables. In the second stage, the results of dynamic network analysis indicate significant selection (partial deselection) and influence effects of adolescent friendship networks on the likelihood of college enrollment. In the selection process, adolescents have high tendency to select friends who are similar to them in the likelihood of college enrollment, or terminate friendships with other students of dissimilar likelihood of college enrollment. In the influence process, the average alter effect is found consistently significant and positive across all models and schools, which indicates that there is strong social influence of friendship network on adolescents' likelihood of college enrollment. The higher the average friends' likelihood of college enrollment, the more likely the adolescent will increase own likelihood of college enrollment. I also discuss the significance of results and many important policy and practical implications.

Book excerpt: Research has found that the preference for associating with those most similar to us in terms of race and gender has been particularly important for shaping the social networks and friendships for American youth. Homophily is defined as the tendency for people to associate with those most similar to themselves within networks (McPherson et al., 2001). However, research on homophily within social networks has not traditionally included socio-economic status in analyses. In this paper, socio-economic status is defined as parental education level, familial income, and type of parental occupation. This paper explores how socio-economic status, in three distinct forms, shapes the composition of adolescent social networks within one school in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health using three different methods. These methods include centrality analyses and Multiple Regression Quadratic Assignment Procedure. Similarly, the extent of social class homophily among friendship dyads is assessed in comparison to gender, race, and grade homophily using Exponential Random Graph Models. Income, occupational, and educational homophily have separate and distinctive effects, as shown by analyses, which is why including more forms of homophily beyond typical control variables (grade, gender, age, and race) may be helpful for understanding friendship ties between students. Overall, results do not find that one socio-economic status type is most prevalent among students in Jefferson High School. However, results indicate that students may interact with more students outside their own socio-economic groups than expected.

Book excerpt: This dissertation consists of three studies that examine when and how friendships facilitate school-related adjustment. The studies rely on data drawn from a large longitudinal school-based study of ethnically and socioeconomically diverse adolescents from sixth grade to one year post-high school. Study 1 examines developmental changes in academic support from friends, relative to families, across the four years of high school, as well as how such changes relate to perceived college readiness at the end of high school and college enrollment one year later. Results from parallel process latent growth curve models indicate that friends can provide adolescents with the academic support to promote college-going confidence and enrollment, especially when such support keeps pace with the increasing school-related stressors across the high school years. Narrowing in from the academic support that friends in general provide, Study 2 examines variation in academic support across friends. Specifically, differences in friend support (i.e., academic and emotional support) are investigated as a function of friendship maintenance (i.e., new versus maintained friends), and as predictors of school-related affect (i.e., school belonging, school liking, academic identification and burnout) one year later. Multilevel structural equation models (accounting for multiple friends nested within students) demonstrate that friendship maintenance across the transition to high school relates to more positive school affect at tenth grade, in part due to higher levels of perceived academic support from friends (e.g., homework help, course-taking advice), but not emotional support. Study 3 builds on Study 2 to examine the achievement implications of another friendship characteristic - dissimilar friendship. Specifically, extending existing conceptions of cross-group friendships, I consider the academic benefits of cross-class friendship (i.e., reciprocal relationships between peers with different levels of parental education). Multilevel analyses reveal that associations between parental education and academic achievement (i.e., grade-point-average, standardized achievement scores and teacher-rated academic engagement) are reduced when students have at least one cross-class friendship at sixth grade. Together these studies highlight how adolescents' academic adjustment is shaped in complex ways by their close peer relationships and provides a more nuanced understanding of the academic function of friendships. The findings advance our understanding of friends' function as academic resources during a developmental phase frequently characterized by declining academic engagement and achievement.

With tuition increasing and reduced subsidies for institutions, showing students how friends can benefit them academically is an economical strategy that can help students graduate in four years opposed to six or more. While different for each student, having a satisfying college experience can involve being a student-athlete, being a member of clubs and/or organizations, participating in intramural sports, engaging local and global communities, work responsibilities, internships, and much more. While attempting to balance it all, students still try to remain social, but who they socialize with can help or hurt their chances at graduating on time, and in some cases, graduating at all. Through years of research McCabe identified three friendship network structures and characteristics of each, including prominent demographics of each network and the collective education outcomes of students in each type of friendship network. Compartmentalizers, tight-knitters, and samplers are the three network types and students who had tight-knit friendship networks, when compared to compartmentalizers and samplers, had the lowest grade point averages (GPA), lowest graduation rates, and most students who had tight-knit friendship networks were black and Latino students. The present study builds on existing literature through examining 10 student-participant interviews where they discussed their friendships, friendship groups, campus engagement, which all gives insight into how friendship networks impact students' social and academic success.

Book excerpt: In this dissertation, I examine whether differences exist between the friendship network characteristics of rural sexual minority and non-minority adolescents friendship networks. I also assess how network differences affect involvement in externalizing behaviors, including delinquency and substance use, and internalizing behaviors, including depression, self-cutting behavior, and suicidal ideation. Peer relationships are of key importance during adolescence, when the influence of peers surpasses the declining influence of parents. However, peer relationships may be poor for sexual minority youth in rural areas where stress and stigma related to ones sexual orientation may be particularly elevated. Unraveling the characteristics of sexual minoritys friendship networks and factors that contribute to their social integration can help us understand how to best improve sexual minorities overall wellbeing.Across three empirical chapters, I explore the friendship networks and behavior of rural sexual minority youth using data from the PROSPER Peers longitudinal study. The PROSPER Peers data followed rural and semi-rural youth in 28 communities in Iowa and Pennsylvania from 6th through 12th grade. Social network data was collected by asking students to name up to seven of their closest in-grade friends. In addition, a random sub-sample of approximately 2,000 respondents were asked to complete follow-up surveys at ages 19 and 21. During these follow-up surveys, respondents were asked to provide their sexual identity. I use respondents answers to the sexual identity question to retrospectively examine how sexual minority status structured their adolescent friendship networks and their involvement in various maladaptive behaviors. In the first empirical chapter, I assess differences in the friendship network characteristics of sexual minority adolescents compared with their heterosexual peers. Results suggest that sexual minority youth are generally not well-integrated in their school friendship networks compared with their heterosexual peers. Across most of the network characteristics examined, sexual minorities scored lower on the network characteristics compared with their heterosexual peers. In the second and third empirical chapters, I explore whether network characteristics mediate the relationships between sexual minority status and externalizing and internalizing behaviors. I find evidence that sexual minority status and gender interact to create different patterns of involvement in externalizing and internalizing behaviors for sexual minority boys and girls with sexual minority girls more likely to externalize and sexual minority boys less likely to engage in externalizing behaviors compared with their heterosexual peers. Findings also showed that sexual minorities, regardless of gender, were more likely to internalize compared with their heterosexual peers. Although the network characteristics largely did not mediate the relationships examined, the findings still point to the importance of examining factors that lead to different pathways of involvement in externalizing and internalizing behaviors. Results from this dissertation also have important policy implications. Schools should aim to create programs and curricula that are inclusive of issues that sexual minority adolescents experience. Policy interventions should also focus on improving feelings of school belonging and social support for sexual minorities to reduce both poor integration and maladaptive behaviors.
