Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Admission and Discharge of Children: Monograph II; To Accompany Round Table Plan for Trustees of Institutions for Dependent Children In order to decide just what treatment is needed by the child, it is necessary to make a diagnosis, and this diagnosis can only be made efficiently through a careful and intelligent case study. This case study must be made by a trained and competent observer with the assistance of experts in medicine and psychology. It will involve a study of the family history of the child, including grandparents, parents, brothers, and sisters, in order to determine the facts of heredity and of home and family in uences affecting the child. It will involve also the environment, education, and training of the child himself. Efficient case study requires a complete medical examination, quite as thorough as would be required for life insurance. It should include the condition of all of the organs and functions of the body including eyes, ears, nose, throat, skin, and teeth, and a complete record should be made of the results. For all children above the age of three years there should be a psychological examination by the use of the binet-simon tests for the purpose of ascertaining as nearly as possible the mental endowment of the child. These tests should be checked 'by the observations of superintendents, matrons, and teachers who may have had the child under extended supervision. In the case of older children it is desirable to use additional tests, which have been devised for the determination of border line cases. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1968, the study described in this title began in a very small way in late 1960. At that time some Oxfordshire county councillors and children’s department officials were very conscious that the number of children in care in the county was high in comparison with the national average. This meant that expenditure was also high. The County’s position, however, was not unique. Oxford City was in a similar position, but other neighbours did not appear to have the same problem. A small research project was launched to investigate and it soon became apparent that there was a large and complex problem to be solved. The problem was of striking, persistent and puzzling variations in the proportion of children in care in the different local authority children’s departments of England and Wales. This seemed to warrant a larger investigation on a country-wide basis and this book outlines the findings of that project.

Book excerpt: The Roundtable on Health Literacy brings together leaders from academia, industry, government, foundations, and associations and representatives of patient and consumer interests who work to improve health literacy. To achieve its mission, the roundtable discusses challenges facing health literacy practice and research and identifies approaches to promote health literacy through mechanisms and partnerships in both the public and private sectors. To explore the aspects of health literacy that impact the ability of patients to understand and follow discharge instructions and to learn from examples of how discharge instructions can be written to improve patient understanding of-and hence compliance with-discharge instructions, the Roundtable on Health Literacy held a public workshop. The workshop featured presentations and discussions that examined the implications of health literacy for discharge instructions for both ambulatory and inpatient facilities. Facilitating Patient Understanding of Discharge Instructions summarizes the presentations and discussions of the workshop. This report gives an overview of the impact of discharge instructions on outcomes, and discusses the specifics of inpatient discharge summaries and outpatient after-visit summaries. The report also contains case studies illustrating different approaches to improving discharge instructions.

Book excerpt: This ambitious resource presents an inventive approach to integrating pediatric and mental health care based in comprehensive, family-centered service delivery. Its framework adds a problem-solving focus to the core principles of pediatric consultation-liaison psychiatry, emphasizing young patients’ developmental, family, and social context. An international panel of expert clinicians explores the value of the mental health component in treating complex and chronic cases across varied settings, as well as practical considerations in implementing collaborative pediatric care systemwide, including at the global level. Detailed case histories illustrate skills and traits essential to making this problem-based approach work, such as multidimensional thinking, a prevention mentality, a dedication to lifelong learning, and empathy and respect for young clients and their families. Included in the coverage: · Pediatric medicine for the child psychiatrist. · Safety issues in a general medical facility setting. · “Other medical” presentations and considerations in pediatric consultation-liaison psychiatry. · Principles of biopsychosocial formulation and interventions in the pediatric medical setting. · Preventive models for reducing major causes of morbidity and mortality in childhood. Child and adolescent psychiatrists, child and school psychologists, and physicians in pediatrics, general practice, and family medicine will welcome Pediatric Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry as both a robust training text and a blueprint for the future of children’s medicine.

Book excerpt: In an era of increasingly patient-centered healthcare, understanding how health and illness play out in social context is vital. This volume opens a unique window on the role of play in health and wellbeing in widely varied contexts, from the work of Patch Adams as a hospital clown, to an Australian facility for dementia treatment, to a New Zealand preschool after an earthquake, to a housing complex where Irish children play near home. Across these and other featured studies, play is shown to be shaman-like in its transformative dynamics, marshaling symbolic resources to re-align how patients construe and experience illness. Even when illness is not an issue, play promotes wellbeing by its power to reimagine, invigorate, enliven and renew through sensory engagement, physical activity, and symbolism. Play levels social barriers and increases flexible response, facilitating both shared social support and creative reassessment. This book challenges assumptions that play is inefficient and unproductive, with highly relevant evidence that playful processes actually work hard to dislodge unproductive approaches and thereby aid resilience. Solid research evidence in this book charts the course and opens the agenda for taking play seriously, for the sake of health. This book was originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of Play.
