With students being viewed as one of the greatest accesses for the educational system, therefore administrators are responsible for designing learning environments that retain, inspire, motivate and are relevant to their student population. The experiences and perceptions of 9 school administrators, from three public high school districts located in the Southwestern and Gulf Coast region of Texas explored the qualitative interpretative phenomenological study of transformational leadership and how implementing transformational attributes (i.e. core values and community involvement) influence the academic achievement rate of African American students within their high schools. Furthermore the study sought to explore how administrators' individual leadership philosophies influenced their organization. The modified van Kaam method contributed to data analysis, which examined administrator responses for comparison and assessment. The themes that emerged from interviews were (a) cultural experiences drives leadership; (b) community collaboration; (c) cultural awareness & customized learning strategies; (d) implementing core value systems; (e) positive relationships. The themes revealed transformational leadership positively influences academic achievement among African American students. Through the implementation of transformational leadership qualities, students were more committed to academic success, actively participated in setting educational goals, and build collaborative relationships with administrators, peers and the community.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative case study was to describe strategies framed within transformational leadership that exemplary African American female principals implement to retain teachers in Texas high-poverty schools. Participants of this case study included 10 African American female principals from elementary, middle, high, and alternative Title 1 schools within the state of Texas. All of the principals had been on their campus at least 2 years and had a 75% or higher retention rate on their campus. The participants were asked questions based on the 4 categories of transformational leadership: idealized influence, inspirational motivation, individualized consideration, and intellectual stimulation. The researcher interviewed all the participants on their respective campuses, transcribed the data, member checked, and then analyzed for common themes. The findings indicated that effective communication, creating campus leadership teams, developing positive principal-teacher relationships, developing positive relationships with students and parents, and having a personal commitment to specific goals were important in retaining teachers. The findings also suggested that when principals effectively train staff, are attentive to the needs of staff, give staff positive praise and activities, and allow uninhibited conversations they are likely to stay on that campus. Implementing the Bambrick model, providing effective professional development (learning), and developing continual learners within the field of education were also found to increase teacher retention. In addition, when principals give teachers autonomy, engage in weekly reviews of lesson plans, and implement effective walkthroughs, teachers remain on their campuses. When all these strategies are completed with fidelity, the rate of teachers remaining in the profession should increase on campuses where African American and Hispanic students are the majority.

Book excerpt: Although much has been written about leaders and leadership, we unfortunately know little about women, particularly minority women, who fill this particular role. This book presents the stories, and the reflections on their paths to leadership in higher education, of seven African American women. Each has been the first woman, first African American, or first African American woman in one or more of the positions of authority that she has held. Each has overcome the double bind of sexism and racism that can inhibit the professional attainment of African American women. Although they followed different paths to leadership, similarities in their experiences, values, and beliefs emerge. They also express a need to give back to those communities that nourished their growth and leadership – of which this book is a manifestation. At a time when significant turnover in college leadership is about to occur – presenting increased opportunities for women and minorities – these leaders hope that the strategies they describe, the insights they impart, the experiences they recount, and, most of all, the passion they have sustained for the betterment of and greater inclusiveness in higher education, will inspire the next generation of women to answer the leadership call.
