Book Synopsis Fatefully, Faithfully Feminist by : Carlos Monsiváis
Download or read book Fatefully, Faithfully Feminist written by Carlos Monsiváis and published by Vanderbilt University Press. This book was released on 2024-02-25 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This critical anthology of writings by Carlos Monsiváis represents a foundational set of texts by an exceptional (yet under‑translated) Mexican cultural critic. Fatefully, Faithfully Feminist situates the urgencies of social movements as they developed in real time. Spanning from 1973 to 2008, Monsiváis’s essays, which were originally compiled by scholar Marta Lamas, analyze the role of women in a patriarchal culture from pre‑Columbian times to the present. This critical edition offers extensive annotation and cultural background to understand the cogent, but particularly Mexican arguments that Monsiváis makes, many of which are extremely relevant in today’s political economy in the US and the world. Norma Klahn and Ilana Luna’s translation, critical introduction, and commentary consider issues of context, history, and conventions, framing Monsiváis’s debates in relation to global feminist history and human rights struggles.

Book Synopsis Confesiones De Un Psiquiatra by : Margarita Lourenco
Download or read book Confesiones De Un Psiquiatra written by Margarita Lourenco and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-06-03 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Unrevolutionary Mexico by : Paul Gillingham
Download or read book Unrevolutionary Mexico written by Paul Gillingham and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential history of how the Mexican Revolution gave way to a unique one-party state In this book Paul Gillingham addresses how the Mexican Revolution (1910-1940) gave way to a capitalist dictatorship of exceptional resilience, where a single party ruled for seventy-one years. Yet while soldiers seized power across the rest of Latin America, in Mexico it was civilians who formed governments, moving punctiliously in and out of office through uninterrupted elections. Drawing on two decades of archival research, Gillingham uses the political and social evolution of the states of Guerrero and Veracruz as starting points to explore this unique authoritarian state that thrived not despite but because of its contradictions. Mexico during the pivotal decades of the mid-twentieth century is revealed as a place where soldiers prevented military rule, a single party lost its own rigged elections, corruption fostered legitimacy, violence was despised but decisive, and a potentially suffocating propaganda coexisted with a critical press and a disbelieving public.

Book Synopsis Politics and History of Violence and Crime in Central America by : Sebastian Huhn
Download or read book Politics and History of Violence and Crime in Central America written by Sebastian Huhn and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-24 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights historical explanations to and roots of present phenomena of violence, insecurity, and law enforcement in Central America. Violence and crime are among the most discussed topics in Central America today, and sensationalism and fear of crime is as present as the increase of private security, the re-militarization of law enforcement, political populism, and mano dura policies. The contributors to this volume discuss historical forms, paths, continuities, and changes of violence and its public and political discussion in the region. This book thus offers in-depth analysis of different patterns of violence, their reproduction over time, their articulation in the present, and finally their discursive mobilization.

Book Synopsis Latin American Mystery Writers by : Darrell B. Lockhart
Download or read book Latin American Mystery Writers written by Darrell B. Lockhart and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2004-03-30 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin America has a rich literary tradition that is receiving growing amounts of attention. The body of Latin American mystery writing is especially vast and diverse. Because it is part of Latin American popular culture, it also reflects many of the social and cultural concerns of that region. This reference provides an overview of mystery fiction of Latin America. While many of the authors profiled have received critical attention, others have been relatively neglected. Included are alphabetically arranged entries on 54 writers, most of whom are from Argentina, Mexico, and Cuba. Every effort has been made to include balanced coverage of the few female mystery writers. Each entry is written by an expert contributor and includes a brief biography, a critical discussion of the writer's works, and primary and secondary bibliographies. The volume closes with a general bibliography of anthologies and criticism.
