Book excerpt: Thyroid Diseases is a comprehensive reference supported by a useful selection of schematic diagrams, tables, and charts. Its basic science section supplements classic and recent reviews of the subject by discussing structural and functional aspects of the thyroid gland, including thyroid hormone action (receptor and non-receptor mediated) and the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid control mechanisms. The clinical aspect of the book critically reviews current diagnostic modalities and addresses the choice of specialized tests and optimal sequence of their performance. Diagnostic modalities discussed include in vitro radioisotopic and nonradioisotopic assays of thyroid hormone, TSH, thyroglobulin, calcitonin, and autoantibodies. The various techniques are evaluated to show which procedures are applicable for each condition. This book brings together information dispersed across the medical and radiological literature. It will benefit professionals in radiology, nuclear medicine, and endocrinology, as well as students in these fields.

Book Synopsis Molecular and Cellular Biology of Insulin-like Growth Factors and Their Receptors by : Derek Leroith
Download or read book Molecular and Cellular Biology of Insulin-like Growth Factors and Their Receptors written by Derek Leroith and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential element in the development and functional integrity of all organisms is intercellular communication. This is achieved by the secretion of soluble messenger molecules which subsequently interact with receptor-effector pathways in the responsive cells. Hormones are traditionally defined as chemical messengers synthesized by endocrine glands. Unlike hormones produced by endocrine glands, growth factors are hormone-related substances produced by many tissues and play an important role in controlling growth and development. While the exact physiological roles of growth factors have yet to be elucidated, they play important roles in the regulation of cellular proliferation and/or differentiation during ontogenesis, growth and differentiation. During recent years there has been a substantial increase in research related to peptide growth factors, their receptors, and modes of action. With the discovery and characterization of numerous growth factors, it became clear that these growth factors had multiple features in common with classic hormones as well as with oncogenes. Furthermore, there are distinct families of growth factors based either on structural or functional similarities.

Book Synopsis Iodine Deficiency in Europe by : F. Delange
Download or read book Iodine Deficiency in Europe written by F. Delange and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The disorders induced by iodine deficiency affect at least one billion people. Because ofits effects on brain development, iodinedeficiency is the single most preventable cause of mental retardation in the world. Therefore, the United Nations and the Heads of State of almost all the world's countries represented at the Summit for Children in 1990 adopted resolutions to eradicate the disorders induced by iodine deficiency (IDD) by the year 2000. For geological and socio-economic reasons, most of the populations affected by iodine deficiency disorders live in isolated and usually mountainous areas, in pre industrialized parts ofthe world. The problem of iodine deficiency in Europe has been greatly underestimated in the last decades. After the remarkable studies on the effects of iodine deficiency and their prevention and correction in Switzerland, IDD was generally considered no longer a significant public health problem in Europe. However, surveys carried out in the early 1980's under the auspices of the European Thyroid Association, clearly demonstrated the persistence of moderately or even severely affected areas. These surveys also highlighted the lack ofinformation about large parts ofEurope, especially its eastern part. It is only quite recently, following major changes in international relations and thanks to the support of UNICEF, WHO, the International Council for the Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders and the European Thyroid Association, that more extensive surveys have been conducted in several parts of Europe hitherto almost unexplored. These surveys showed that most European countries were iodine deficient.
