Book Synopsis Cardiovascular Biology of Purines by : Geoffrey Burnstock
Download or read book Cardiovascular Biology of Purines written by Geoffrey Burnstock and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following many years when a great deal of attention was directed towards the intracellular roles of purines, there is expanding interest in the field of extracellular purinergic signalling. In this book we focus on the actions of purines in cardiovascular biology, where it is clear that they play major roles in both normal and pathophysiological conditions. Activation of different purinoceptor subtypes by purines can regulate cardiac contractility and electrical activity, modulate catecholamine-mediated responses both pre- and post-junctionally, trigger and mediate ischaemic preconditioning, cause vasodilation and vasoconstriction and enhance endothelial proliferation and apoptosis as well as inhibit platelet and neutrophil function. This book covers the cardiovascular actions mediated by the major P1 and P2 subclasses of purinoceptors and emphasizes the interactions between these two signalling systems. Cardiovascular Biology of Purines covers topics ranging from molecular and cellular to systemic and clinical. It also aims to highlight how basic advances have led to the identification of novel targets for cardiovascular therapeutic developments. We hope that our book will prove to be timely and helpful.

Book Synopsis Whole Organ Approaches to Cellular Metabolism by : James Bassingthwaighte
Download or read book Whole Organ Approaches to Cellular Metabolism written by James Bassingthwaighte and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of capillary-tissue exchange physiology has been galvanized twice in the past 25 years. A 1969 conference at the National Academy of Sciences in Copenhagen resulted in the book Capillary Permeability: The Transfer of Mole cules and Ions Between the Capillary Blood and the Tissue (Crone and Lassen, 1970). It focused on the physiochemical aspects of transcapillary water and solute transport. The field has matured considerably since. This volume was designed as the successor to the 1970 book, and was created at a gathering of the authors at McGill University. It too captures the breadth of a field that has been dramatically enriched by numerous technical and conceptual advances. In 1970 it was already known that the capillary wall was not merely a "cellophane bag" exerting steric hindrances on solute particles. Instead, the endothelial surface was recognized as the site of binding reactions and permeation by passive or carrier-mediated trans port. Furthermore, the cells of the blood could traverse evanescent wide openings in the "zippered" clefts. Today, research priorities have turned more to cell-cell interactions, toward understanding the utility of the gap junctional connections between endothelial cells and neighboring smooth muscle cells, neuronal twigs, and the parenchymal cells of organs. New discoveries in the past few years have revealed the critical importance of the close relationships between the endothelial cells and the parenchymal cells.
Book Synopsis Purine and Pyrimidine Metabolism in Man X by : Esther Zoref-Shani
Download or read book Purine and Pyrimidine Metabolism in Man X written by Esther Zoref-Shani and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-01-31 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: th This volume contains articles presented at the X International Symposium on Purines and Pyrimidines in Man, held on May 14 19, 2000 in Tel Aviv, Israel. The first symposium in this series took place in Tel Aviv in 1973. Since then, the symposium has been held every three years in different parts of the world, including Europe, USA and Japan. The participants, in this series of symposia, are characterised by a wide interest in the various aspects of purines and pyrimidines in man, which include biochemistry, genetics, pharmacology, physiology, clinics, etc. Presentations in the symposia include clarification of metabolic pathways, characterisation of enzyme structure and kinetics and discoveries of new inborn errors of metabolism and suggestions for new therapeutic approaches for these inborn errors. In addition, development of new purine and pyrimidine derivatives for the treatment of cancer and viral diseases, and many more subjects of mutual interest were brought to the fore. With the development of therapeutic means and of new research tools, we have witnessed changes in the areas of interest. The interest in gout and uric acid urolithiasis has lessened, whereas molecular aspects, the role of purine and pyrimidine substances in neurotransmission and in purinergic signaling appear to gain greater interest. The articles, included in this volume, contain new data pertaining to the various aspects detailed above.
Book Synopsis Nucleotides and their Receptors in the Nervous System by : P. Illes
Download or read book Nucleotides and their Receptors in the Nervous System written by P. Illes and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-08-31 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of purinergic mechanisms has for long been focused on the actions of the nucleoside adenosine, whereby the contribution of nucleotides to the signaling systems has been underestimated.Based on the proceedings of a IUPHAR Satellite Conference held in Leipzig, Germany, this book offers a comprehensive update and overview of nucleotide release, the structure and function of nucleotide receptors, nucleotide-metabolizing ecto-enzymes as well as the physiological functions of nucleotides in the nervous system. The physiology and molecular biology of receptors for ATP and other nucleotides are examined, as are the physiology and molecular biology of enzymes that hydrolyze extracellular nucleotides. At present, a pharmacology of the nucleotide signaling system is being developed. Of particular interest is the production of receptor subtype-specific antagonists and of drugs that selectively affect the extracellular lifetime of the nucleotide. An excellent source of reference for institutes of pharmacology, biochemistry, neurology, zoology, and physiology, and for the pharmaceutical industry.

Book Synopsis Adenosine Receptors in Health and Disease by : Constance N. Wilson
Download or read book Adenosine Receptors in Health and Disease written by Constance N. Wilson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-07-28 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since their discovery approximately 25 years ago, adenosine receptors have now emerged as important novel molecular targets in disease and drug discovery. These proteins play important roles in the entire spectrum of disease from inflammation to immune suppression. Because of their expression on a number of different cell types and in a number of different organ systems they play important roles in specific diseases, including asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, stroke, cancer, sepsis, and obesity. As a result of intense investigations into understanding the molecular structures and pharmacology of these proteins, new molecules have been synthesized that have high specificity for these proteins and are now entering clinical trials. These molecules will define the next new classes of drugs for a number of diseases with unmet medical needs.
