Book excerpt: The results also suggest that probably it is not enough to compare with the results from other models by using only one deterministic RegCM2 run. The distribution of outlier statistic shows that nearly 50% of days are located outside of the range of the ensemble forecasts. The results may suggest that perturbing the PBL scheme simultaneously be necessary. The ROC curve shows that ensemble forecasts have skill to predict the annual precipitation anomaly. The results indicate as well that the probabilistic forecasts may have a more valuable than ensemble mean and are superior to the reference run. In addition, analysis shows large values of both parameters will be safe to tune RegCM2. Model solutions will be more stable and have small root mean square errors. However, such cases show more systematic errors and relate closely to the occurrence of precipitation events. Our suggestion is to survey more uncertainties associated with model errors. The perturbed model can help us to narrow down the source of model error.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 2010, the Office of Biological and Environmental Research of the U.S. Department of Energy in conjunction with the U.S. Global Change Research Program convened a workshop in Arlington, Virginia to address questions and issues regarding the use of mathematical models for the National Climate Assessment (NCA). The workshop also addressed the complex issues that arise when data and models are applied at multiple spatial and temporal scales, an inherent requirement of a national climate assessment. An Interagency National Climate Assessment (INCA) Task Force provided guidance regarding purpose, scope, and objectives of the workshop. The results of the workshop in turn offer guidance not only for the National Climate Assessment but also more generally for future research in the use of models for these tasks. The workshop included plenary-session presentations and panels as well as breakout group discussions. Presentations and discussions covered both global and regional climate models and linkages of these models to enable regional analyses or downscaling of variables constrained by global model results. Participants reviewed potential use of carbon cycle and other biogeochemical cycling models as well as a range of models for analyzing the impacts of climate change on various sectors and within different regions. Integrated assessment models that relate climate change to human factors were discussed, as were various options for coupling models (used to assess climate change impacts) to either data on human activities or models of various human systems. Participants offered significant insights about the use of models within the overall NCA structure of linked sectors and regions. A number of workshop findings and recommendations apply to the development of a longer-term, sustained Assessment process.

Book excerpt: For the very first time, this book provides updated, integrated and organized, theoretical and methodological information on regional climate change and the associated environmental and socio-economic impacts on a regional scale. The most recent findings in the field of long-term climate change, which improve our understanding of the global climate puzzle, will be presented. Readers are introduced to state-of-the-art research in downscaling and GCMs, which involve the construction of reliable regional climate scenarios and the solution to key problems regarding the assessment of the impacts of climate change in the most important geographical areas of the world, from the Arctic to Antarctic regions, with special emphasis on the Northern Hemisphere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's climate variability already has a large impact on water supply and protection. Millions of people are affected every year by droughts and floods. Future climate change is likely to make things worse. Many people within the water sector are aware that climate change is expected to have serious consequences for water resource management, but they are unsure how to incorporate climate information into their management structures. Providing a compendium of specific strategies, Climate Change Adaptation in the Water Sector is the first book to show students and professionals in the water sector how to adapt to climate change and variability. It enables advanced students, managers, decision-makers and other practitioners to feel comfortable in analysing and using climate data within the water sector. The book consists of two parts: the first describes the general issues and is written mainly by the editors of the book, while the second part contains specific case studies drawn from a wide range of contrasting countries: Australia, Germany, The Netherlands, the Philippines, South Africa, Thailand and Yemen. Published in association with the Co-operative Programme on Water and Climate, NeWater, UNESCO and WATCH (Water and Global Change)
