Book excerpt: Excerpt from Addresses to Engineering Students Just here it is pertinent to mention that the compilation has not by any means been undertaken as a money-making venture - far from it - because the Editors have not only done gratis all the work involved in its preparation, but also have themselves paid the cost of typesetting and providing the plates, in order that the book may be sold to engineering students at the actual cost of paper, press - work, binding, and distribution, the latter being reduced to an absolute minimum by cutting out all possible profit thereon. This has permitted of the book being sold to students of engineering, when ordered in large quantities, at seventy-five cents per copy and to the general public in single copies at one dollar. The Editors were guided in this action by the following reasons: First. They want the book not only to be widely read but also to remain permanently for reference in the libraries of those who read it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Addresses to Engineering Students For some time the compilers of this work have been considering the advisability of editing and publishing the papers of which it is composed, although from the very start they were firmly convinced of both its necessity and the great amount of good that it is capable of accomplishing for the engineering profession. Finally, in February, 1911, in order to settle the question, they sent a circular letter to some six hundred and fifty instructors in American and Canadian engineering schools requesting their opinions, which later proved to be almost unanimously favorable. This letter asked not only each professor's idea concerning the advisability of the publication; but also whether he would use the work as a text book and, if so, how many copies per annum would probably be required for his classes. While the number thus ascertained to be needed was not as great as might have been desired, it was large enough to warrant the Editors in undertaking the work. Just here it is pertinent to mention that the compilation has not by any means been undertaken as a money-making venture - far from it! - because the Editors have not only done gratis all the work involved in its preparation, but also have themselves paid the cost of typesetting and providing the plates, in order that the book may be sold to engineering students at the actual cost of paper, press-work, binding, and distribution, the latter being reduced to an absolute minimum by cutting out all possible profit thereon. Second. As the compelling of students to purchase an additional text book is looked upon by some persons to be in the nature of an imposition, it appeared advisable to minimize to the utmost the gravity of such imposition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literature for Engineers: An Address Delivered Before the Colleges of Civil and Mechanical Engineering In any case, we are not here for the arraignment of deficiencies, which, if they exist, are due to the general status of technical education throughout the country. But if, overtly or indirectly, we must mor alize for a moment, let us at all events discuss no form of self-seeking, cultural or otherwise. Far be it from a teacher of literature, of the most social of all the arts, to say to any man: 'go to; read now this, that, and the other literary masterpiece - read Milton, read Shakespeare - simply for your own sake, ' for the sake of what is called self-improvement. If true culture is essentially and inherently social, if it is inherently self-denying, sympathetic, we had better realize this essential and inherent nature of the thing at the outset. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Futility of Technical Schools in Connection With Mechanics and Manufacturing or Electrical and Civil Engineering: An Address to College Students To the Subject of higher schools, in all their departments, I have given much study for many years, and while I consider them all to be full of errors, deception and ignorance, the technical institutions are particularly misunderstood, and con cerning them the people need to be enlightened. This misconception of their value and importance is quite natural, as the whole subject is shrouded largely in mystery, since science is so largely connected with it, and concerning anything with which science is associated the masses have no correct opinion. They imagine that as science in the past has played an important part in the progress of civilization, this also must be the case today, which is not a fact. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Engineering as a Vocation The subject matter of this work has been rearranged (with additions) from a number of addresses given before technical schools and asso ciations of engineer assistants. It is published for the information of parents in order that they may act wisely in selecting a career for their sons. Semi-technical periodicals and daily newspapers are bureaus of information consulted frequently by ill-informed parents; and, perhaps, more than half the students now in technical schools are there because of opinions obtained as valuable advice from such sources. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Engineering Student's Notes, Technical, Philosophical and Otherwise The subject matter that makes up most of the present book was written between the years 1890 and 1897, and published in the Magazine "Industry," of which publication the writer was the editor during that period. The title assumed at that time was "Extracts from a Note Book-by Techno," began and for some time continued as a means of instructing students and apprentices in the processes of engineering work by a half-humorous treatment that would divest the subject of its usual formal and dry presentment in technical books. The articles met with much commendation, but it was found after five or six chapters had been prepared that the field was too circumscribed, and that the "Extracts" must extend into the outer world and change their form, or cease. A new scheme was adopted in the sixth article, where the present revision begins, omitting, with a few exceptions, so much as would fail to have interest for non-technical readers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Value of English to the Practicing Engineer The letters were the outcome of a discussion which arose some months ago in a class of junior engineers. The question under consideration was the comparative value of pure and applied science in the engineering curriculum. As was natural perhaps, every member of the class upheld the superior value of applied science, on the ground that it was more practical. This led to an inquiry into the character of a liberal education and the relation of science and culture, and in this connection the following questions arose: 1. Is the study of English part of the cultural or of the practical training of the engineer? 2. Should essay-subjects for engineering students be drawn from the students' general interests, or be confined to the scientific and technical field? Incidental ly it appeared that some members of the class were in doubt whether training in English was of special value to engineers. In order to answer these questions and allay the doubt which had arisen, it seemed wise to refer the points at issue to practicing engineers whose experience would qualify them to speak with authority. Accordingly a list was made of about eighty successful engineers who since leaving the University had each had from five to ten years of professional activity. The students were then required to address letters to these graduates asking them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Engineering and Manual for Testing: For Engineers and for Students in Engineering Laboratories This work deals principally with educational methods, the use of apparatus, and the preparation required for making a skilled observer. It is believed, however, that the volume will not be without value as a reference book to the consulting and practising engineer, since it contains in a single volume the principal standard methods which have from time to time been adopted by various engineering societies for the testing of materials, engines, and other machinery, and an extensive series of tables useful in computing results. It also contains a description of the apparatus required in testing and directions for taking data and deducing results in engineering experiments as applied in nearly every branch of the art. An attempt has been made, by dividing the book into several chapters of moderate length and making the paragraphs short, to make references to the book easy to those who care to consult it. The full list of subjects treated in the book is given in the Table of Contents, which immediately follows the Preface. Some of the more important divisions of the work are as follows.
