Book Synopsis The Lost State of Franklin by : Kevin T. Barksdale

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years following the Revolutionary War, the young American nation was in a state of chaos. Citizens pleaded with government leaders to reorganize local infrastructures and heighten regulations, but economic turmoil, Native American warfare, and political unrest persisted. By 1784, one group of North Carolina frontiersmen could no longer stand the unresponsiveness of state leaders to their growing demands. This ambitious coalition of Tennessee Valley citizens declared their region independent from North Carolina, forming the state of Franklin. The Lost State of Franklin: America's First Secession chronicles the history of this ill-fated movement from its origins in the early settlement of East Tennessee to its eventual violent demise. Author Kevin T. Barksdale investigates how this lost state failed so ruinously, examining its history and tracing the development of its modern mythology. The Franklin independence movement emerged from the shared desires of a powerful group of landed elite, yeoman farmers, and country merchants. Over the course of four years they managed to develop a functioning state government, court system, and backcountry bureaucracy. Cloaking their motives in the rhetoric of the American Revolution, the Franklinites aimed to defend their land claims, expand their economy, and eradicate the area's Native American population. They sought admission into the union as America's fourteenth state, but their secession never garnered support from outside the Tennessee Valley. Confronted by Native American resistance and the opposition of the North Carolina government, the state of Franklin incited a firestorm of partisan and Indian violence. Despite a brief diplomatic flirtation with the nation of Spain during the state's final days, the state was never able to recover from the warfare, and Franklin collapsed in 1788. East Tennesseans now regard the lost state of Franklin as a symbol of rugged individualism and regional exceptionalism, but outside the region the movement has been largely forgotten. The Lost State of Franklin presents the complete history of this defiant secession and examines the formation of its romanticized local legacy. In reevaluating this complex political movement, Barksdale sheds light on a remarkable Appalachian insurrection and reminds readers of the extraordinary, fragile nature of America's young independence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Their love-affair with education redefined the meaning of revivals, shifting the focus of religious experience from the camp meeting to the classroom. Schweiger describes the pastors' efforts to rope in new members, fatten denominational coffers, organize scores of committees, and raise elegant brick churches and colleges. She looks at the role of the clergy in the Civil War, examining their response to the loss of the war as well as their subsequent efforts to create social consensus in the postwar South. Finally, she considers the postwar loss of clerical authority and the corresponding gains in lay voluntarism, and in the growth of women's influence in the churches."--Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Addresses Delivered Before the Dauphin County Historical Society: In the State Capitol, Harrisburg, July 4, 1876 [In every section of Dauphin county, the one hundredth anniversary of American Independence was celebrated with a degree of enthusiasm scarcely equaled since Independence Bell "Proclaimed Liberty throughout all the Land," in 1776. In the City of Harrisburg, and the boroughs of Lykens, Millersburg and Middletown, the celebration embraced civic parades, orations, and displays of fire-works. At the seat of government the arrangements for addresses to be delivered on the occasion, was conceded, as it was confided to the Historical Society of Dauphin county, which at once directed the preparation of appropriate sketches, assigned as follows: The Ecclesiastical History of Dauphin County: To Rev. Thomas H. Robinson, D. D. Dauphin County in the Revolution: To A. Boyd Hamilton. Historical Review of Dauphin County: To William H. Egle, M. D. In addition to these, John L. Sexton was requested to prepare an address on the "Industrial Progress of Pennsylvania." The three former being the more intimately connected with the historic record of the county of Dauphin, are herewith presented. Book Synopsis Virginia Women by : Cynthia A. Kierner
Download or read book Virginia Women written by Cynthia A. Kierner and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2015-04-01 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virginia Women is the first of two volumes exploring the history of Virginia women through the lives of exemplary and remarkable individuals. This collection of seventeen essays, written by established and emerging scholars, recovers the stories and voices of a diverse group of women, from the seventeenth century through the Civil War era. Placing their subjects in their larger historical contexts, the authors show how the experiences of Virginia women varied by race, class, age, and marital status, and also across both space and time. Some essays examine the lives of well-known women—such as First Lady Dolley Madison—from a new perspective. Others introduce readers to relatively obscure historical figures: the convicted witch Grace Sherwood; the colonial printer Clementina Rind; Harriet Hemings, the enslaved daughter of Thomas Jefferson. Essays on the frontier heroine Mary Draper Ingles and the Civil War spy Elizabeth Van Lew examine the real women behind the legends. Altogether, the essays in this collection offer readers an engaging and personal window onto the experiences of women in the Old Dominion.
