Book excerpt: Multilevel decision theory arises to resolve the contradiction between increasing requirements towards the process of design, synthesis, control and management of complex systems and the limitation of the power of technical, control, computer and other executive devices, which have to perform actions and to satisfy requirements in real time. This theory rises suggestions how to replace the centralised management of the system by hierarchical co-ordination of sub-processes. All sub-processes have lower dimensions, which support easier management and decision making. But the sub-processes are interconnected and they influence each other. Multilevel systems theory supports two main methodological tools: decomposition and co-ordination. Both have been developed, and implemented in practical applications concerning design, control and management of complex systems. In general, it is always beneficial to find the best or optimal solution in processes of system design, control and management. The real tendency towards the best (optimal) decision requires to present all activities in the form of a definition and then the solution of an appropriate optimization problem. Every optimization process needs the mathematical definition and solution of a well stated optimization problem. These problems belong to two classes: static optimization and dynamic optimization. Static optimization problems are solved applying methods of mathematical programming: conditional and unconditional optimization. Dynamic optimization problems are solved by methods of variation calculus: Euler Lagrange method; maximum principle; dynamical programming.

Book excerpt: Robust Integration of Model-Based Fault Estimation and Fault-Tolerant Control is a systematic examination of methods used to overcome the inevitable system uncertainties arising when a fault estimation (FE) function and a fault-tolerant controller interact as they are employed together to compensate for system faults and maintain robustly acceptable system performance. It covers the important subject of robust integration of FE and FTC with the aim of guaranteeing closed-loop stability. The reader’s understanding of the theory is supported by the extensive use of tutorial examples, including some MATLAB®-based material available from the Springer website and by industrial-applications-based material. The text is structured into three parts: Part I examines the basic concepts of FE and FTC, providing extensive insight into the importance of and challenges involved in their integration; Part II describes five effective strategies for the integration of FE and FTC: sequential, iterative, simultaneous, adaptive-decoupling, and robust decoupling; and Part III begins to extend the proposed strategies to nonlinear and large-scale systems and covers their application in the fields of renewable energy, robotics and networked systems. The strategies presented are applicable to a broad range of control problems, because in the absence of faults the FE-based FTC naturally reverts to conventional observer-based control. The book is a useful resource for researchers and engineers working in the area of fault-tolerant control systems, and supplementary material for a graduate- or postgraduate-level course on fault diagnosis and FTC. Advances in Industrial Control reports and encourages the transfer of technology in control engineering. The rapid development of control technology has an impact on all areas of the control discipline. The series offers an opportunity for researchers to present an extended exposition of new work in all aspects of industrial control.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers presented at the 9th IFAC Symposium on Large Scale Systems: Theory and Applications (LSS 2001), held in Bucharest, Romania, 18-20 July 2001. Its aim was to address the control aspects of those industrial, economic, social and environmental systems whose characteristics are high dimensionality, non-linearity and uncertainty, associated with a multitude of structural forms, with intense and time critical information exchange and efficient co-ordination. The symposium covered all major aspects of large scale, complex systems including methodological aspects, technological solutions and practical applications. methodological aspects and those devoted to practical applications. Several invited sessions were organised, including papers from leading world experts. The papers are ordered in accordance with the technical sessions. Session topics include methodology and application fields, traditional to this Symposium series. Topics covered include the following: modelling and model reduction; decentralized control and estimation; hierarchical control; intelligent and fuzzy control; nonlinear dynamics in complex systems; complex systems theory and analysis; water, gas, power systems; large scale CIMs and production planning and scheduling; communication and information systems; transportation systems; modelling and control of wastewater treatment plants and societal systems modelling, planning and management. technical programme, such as decision support systems and risk and governance in large-scale systems. More recent issues, such as risk management and human decision in large-scale systems, were well received by the symposium participants and provide an extra dimension to volume.
