Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Intelligent Vehicles provides a complete coverage of the fundamentals, new technologies, and sub-areas essential to the development of intelligent vehicles; it also includes advances made to date, challenges, and future trends. Significant strides in the field have been made to date; however, so far there has been no single book or volume which captures these advances in a comprehensive format, addressing all essential components and subspecialties of intelligent vehicles, as this book does. Since the intended users are engineering practitioners, as well as researchers and graduate students, the book chapters do not only cover fundamentals, methods, and algorithms but also include how software/hardware are implemented, and demonstrate the advances along with their present challenges. Research at both component and systems levels are required to advance the functionality of intelligent vehicles. This volume covers both of these aspects in addition to the fundamentals listed above.

These include the well-known standard systems such as Anti-lock braking system (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC) or Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). But it includes also new systems for protecting collisions protection, for changing the lane, or for convenient parking. The book aims at giving a complete picture focusing on the entire system. First, it describes the components which are necessary for assistance systems, such as sensors, actuators, mechatronic subsystems, and control elements. Then, it explains key features for the user-friendly design of human-machine interfaces between driver and assistance system. Finally, important characteristic features of driver assistance systems for particular vehicles are presented: Systems for commercial vehicles and motorcycles.

This book was released on 2023-11-07 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adaptive cruise control is one of the essential technologies of advanced driver assistance systems, which is used to maintain a safe distance between an ego vehicle and a preceding vehicle and has been extensively applied in the automotive industry and control community. Note that some vehicle manoeuvres may approach handling limits to prevent collisions under complex road conditions, which often leads to vehicle lateral instability while cruising. In this study, a T-S fuzzy model predictive control framework is applied to the problem of adaptive cruise control. Variations in the preceding vehicle velocity and road surface conditions are considered to formulate adaptive cruise control as a tracking control problem of a T-S fuzzy system subject to parameter uncertainties and external persistent perturbations. Then, a robust positively invariant set is introduced to derive an admissible T-S fuzzy controller by solving a min-max optimization problem under a series of linear matrix inequality constraints. Finally, a CarSim/MATLAB joint simulation is conducted to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, which ensures longitudinal adaptive cruise control for a car-following scenario with lateral vehicle stability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soft Computing is a complex of methodologies that includes artificial neural networks, genetic algorithms, fuzzy logic, Bayesian networks, and their hybrids. It admits approximate reasoning, imprecision, uncertainty and partial truth in order to mimic the remarkable human capability of making decisions in real-life, ambiguous environments. Soft Computing has therefore become popular in developing systems that encapsulate human expertise. 'Applications of Soft Computing: Updating the State of Art' contains a collection of papers that were presented at the 12th On-line World Conference on Soft Computing in Industrial Applications, held in October 2007. This carefully edited book provides a comprehensive overview of the recent advances in the industrial applications of soft computing and covers a wide range of application areas, including design, intelligent control, optimization, signal processing, pattern recognition, computer graphics, production, as well as civil engineering and applications to traffic and transportation systems. The book is aimed at researchers and practitioners who are engaged in developing and applying intelligent systems principles to solving real-world problems. It is also suitable as wider reading for science and engineering postgraduate students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vehicle Dynamics and Control provides a comprehensive coverage of vehicle control systems and the dynamic models used in the development of these control systems. The control system applications covered in the book include cruise control, adaptive cruise control, ABS, automated lane keeping, automated highway systems, yaw stability control, engine control, passive, active and semi-active suspensions, tire-road friction coefficient estimation, rollover prevention, and hybrid electric vehicles. In developing the dynamic model for each application, an effort is made to both keep the model simple enough for control system design but at the same time rich enough to capture the essential features of the dynamics. A special effort has been made to explain the several different tire models commonly used in literature and to interpret them physically. In the second edition of the book, chapters on roll dynamics, rollover prevention and hybrid electric vehicles have been added, and the chapter on electronic stability control has been enhanced. The use of feedback control systems on automobiles is growing rapidly. This book is intended to serve as a useful resource to researchers who work on the development of such control systems, both in the automotive industry and at universities. The book can also serve as a textbook for a graduate level course on Vehicle Dynamics and Control.
