Book excerpt: Quality of service provisioning in wireless ad hoc networks plays an integral part in determining the success of network-centric warfare as envisioned in future military operations. It requires good scalability of the QoS architecture since ad hoc networks in the battlefield tend to be large. Previous work attacking QoS in ad hoc networks seldom considers the scalability issues. In this paper, we propose a scalable QoS architecture for such networks. Our scheme draws upon the positive aspects of both IntServ and DiffServ, and extends upon the scalable LANMAR routing protocol to support QoS. The scheme is also capable of incorporating mobile backbone networks (MBNs) to further improve the scalability. Simulation results show that our proposed QoS architecture can achieve good scalability in terms of large network size and mobility.

Book excerpt: Position-based routing was originally developed for packet radio networks in the 1980s [6]. It received renewed interest during the last few years as a method for routing in mobile wireless ad hoc and sensor networks [1, 2, 4]. The general idea of is to select the next hop based on position information such that the packet is forwarded in the geographical direction of the destination. Position-based routing can be divided into two main components: the location service and position-based forwarding. The location service [5, 13] is used for mapping the unique identifier (for example an IP address) of a node to its geographical position. In mobile ad hoc networks, providing accurate location service for position based routing, with low communication overhead, appears to be more difficult task than routing itself [13]. In case of sensor networks, however, destination is a sink or base station whose position is made available to source sensors by flooding. Position-based forwarding is performed by a node to select one of its neighbors as the next hop the packet should be forwarded to. Usually, the following information is required for the forwarding decision: the node's own geographical position, the position of all neighbors within transmission range and the position of the destination. Based on this information, the forwarding node selects one of its neighbors as the next hop such that the packet makes progress toward the geographical position of the destination.

Book excerpt: Today's ubiquitous computing technology is imbedded in everyday objects from cars to clothes to shipping containers, whose location, context, and state can be monitored, instantly processed, and acted upon. This new volume in the "Advances in Management Information Systems" series provides an in-depth review of the state-of-the-art practices and research opportunities in a new era where information technology resides in physical space. Written for both scholars and practitioners, "Pervasive Information Systems" is organized into three sections, each investigating a distinct part of the subject. Part I focuses on the design challenges of Pervasive Information Systems (PS), and discusses issues relating to the coordination of PS through middleware structures as well as issues related to the efficient deployment of PS. Part II discusses the challenges and limitations of deploying pervasive technologies to support domestic, corporate, and public systems. Part III presents two emerging research fields of PS - design for aesthetics and PS evaluation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: QoS provisioning over Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks (MANETs) has attracted a great attention in recent years. While much research effort has been devoted to provide QoS over wired and cellular networks, QoS solutions for the support of real-time traffic over MANETs remains one of the most challenging and least explored areas. In fact, real-time applications such as voice and video could not function properly on MANETs without a QoS oriented medium access control (MAC) scheme. Indeed, real-time traffics claim strict requirements in terms of transmission delay and packet dropping that can be fulfilled only if the MAC sub-layer provides bounded channel access delay, and low collision rate. The purpose of this thesis is the proposal and analysis of an efficient reservation MAC protocol to provide QoS support over MANETs. Firstly, we study one major issue in resource reservation for MANETs which is reservation consistency. Our analysis of existing reservation MAC protocols for MANETs reveals that many reservation conflicts between neighbor nodes occur during the reservation establishment phase. These conflicts which are mainly due to collisions of reservation control messages, have an important impact on the performance of the reservation protocol, and lead to a significant collision and loss of packets during the life-time of the connection, which is not acceptable for real-time traffics. We design a new reservation MAC protocol that resolves these conflicts. The main principle of our protocol is to achieve better coordination between neighbor nodes in order to ensure consistency of reservations. Thus, before considering a reservation as successful, the protocol tries to ensure that each reservation control message transmitted by a node is successfully received by all its neighbors. In the second part of this thesis, we apply the proposed reservation protocol to voice traffic...

Book excerpt: Although the existing layering infrastructure--used globally for designing computers, data networks, and intelligent distributed systems and which connects various local and global communication services--is conceptually correct and pedagogically elegant, it is now well over 30 years old has started create a serious bottleneck. Using Cross-Layer Techniques for Communication Systems: Techniques and Applications explores how cross-layer methods provide ways to escape from the current communications model and overcome the challenges imposed by restrictive boundaries between layers. Written exclusively by well-established researchers, experts, and professional engineers, the book will present basic concepts, address different approaches for solving the cross-layer problem, investigate recent developments in cross-layer problems and solutions, and present the latest applications of the cross-layer in a variety of systems and networks.

Book excerpt: Supporting diverse applications with various Quality-of-Service guarantees in ATM-based broadband networks requires the design of a proper bandwidth control mechanism at the switch nodes. We proposed in this work a new adaptive approach to the bandwidth control and developed an Adaptive Bandwidth Scheduling Scheme, called CABS. Our scheme uses the laxity of cells and a combination of four priority types: space priority, time priority, cell loss priority and rate regulation. The novel concept facilitates achieving the desired design goals while enabling the flexible control and the lower complexity. The CABS scheme has further advantages, including isolation, fair and adaptive distribution of bandwidth. In order to give a complete solution, an integrated concept was proposed for bandwidth management, connection admission control and flow control. Several simulations were made to exemplify the service guarantees and other advantageous properties provided by the CABS scheme for the single node case and for a network configuration.
