Book excerpt: An adaptive control scheme may provide the best approach to the problem of accommodating automatic flight control systems to the variations of dynamic characteristics encountered over the flight envelope of the aircraft. The C*-Criterion for aircraft time response provides a basis for the design of such a system. To provide a margin of safety, all control systems have redundant channels for emergency use. An adaptive control system can be designed to be self-organizing, and in such a configuration can provide its own failure monitoring, resulting in a simpler and more efficient system. This study shows that such a system is feasible, that the response of the system is within the limits set forth in the C*-Criterion, and that the self-organizing characteristics provide reliable operation over the whole range of flight operations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Control Systems: Theory and Applications, Volume 6 provides information pertinent to the significant progress in the field of control and systems theory and applications. This book presents the higher level of automata, which represent the embodiment of the application of artificial intelligence techniques to control system design and may be described as self-organizing systems. Organized into four chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the existing technology in learning control system. This text then demonstrates how to apply artificial intelligence techniques to the designs of off-line and on-line learning control systems. Other chapters consider the decomposition methods and the associated multilevel optimization techniques applicable to control system optimization problems. This book discusses as well the complex optimal system control problems applied to the trajectory optimization problem. The final chapter deals with systems described by partial differential equations. This book is a valuable resource for control system engineers.

Book Synopsis A Feasibility Study of Self-learning Adaptive Flight Control for High Performance Aircraft by : Stephen G. Hoppe

This book was released on 1967 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the feasibility of a self-learning adaptive system for the flight control of high performance aircraft has been performed. A flight control system was developed for the investigation of the stability augmentation of the longitudinal axis of the F101B aircraft using self-learning adaptive control. The learning adaptive controller developed employs a three-loop concept. The innermost loop comprises a linear feedback control system in which a set of control gains is adjusted by a second (adaptive) loop employing a parameter identifier and a trainable function generator (automation). The automation provides the correct values of feedback gain in response to patterns derived from the identified aircraft parameters. The third loop (the learning loop) measures control system performance, and continually retrains the automation to improve the performance. Experiments were performed with a digital simulation of the aircraft and the learning adaptive control system. Results of the experiments indicate that learning adaptive control is feasible. However, a number of significant technical problems must be overcome prior to the use of such a control system in tactical aircraft. Studies of sensitivity must be performed to assess the effect of small perturbations in the identification parameters on system performance. Extended studies of property extraction from the identified parameters is required, and means for further simplifying the control structure is of importance in a real system. (Author).
Book Synopsis Applications of Adaptive Control by : Kumpati S. Narendra
Download or read book Applications of Adaptive Control written by Kumpati S. Narendra and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Control Applications of Adaptive covers the proceedings of the 197 Workshop on Applications of Adaptive Control, held in Yale University. This book is organized into five parts encompassing 18 chapters that summarize the potential application of adaptive control to many practical problems. Part I contains tutorials that bring together important result s in two of the most studied approaches to adaptive control, namely, self-tuning regulators and model reference adaptive control (MRAC), with a particular emphasis on the importance of error models in the stability analysis of MRAC. Part II examines the algorithms used for adaptive signal processing, while Part III describes the types of power systems problems that could benefit from application of adaptive control and how to apply adaptive control algorithms for controlling large electric generators. Part IV highlights adaptive control in aircraft systems. This part also considers how adaptive control fell into disfavor in the flight control community, illustrating the existence of residual negative bias. The desirability of cost elimination of air data sensors in less-sophisticated flight control systems is also discussed. Part V addresses the application of process control to chemical processes and to electromechanical systems. This part also shows the robustness and superior tracking and regulation properties of model reference adaptive control applied to liquid level control. Discussion on various classes of model reference adaptive controllers in a common framework from the viewpoint of microcomputer implementation is also included. This book will be of value to control system theorists and practitioners.
