Book excerpt: In 2008 the USCCB published a curriculum framework for high school religious education curricula entitled Doctrinal Elements of Curriculum Framework for the Development of Catechetical Materials for Young People of High School Age (Framework). Since the Framework's release, publishers have adapted its doctrinal tenants to textbooks and catechetical materials for use within high schools and parishes. Those textbooks and catechetical materials that the USCCB have found to be in conformity with the teachings of the Catechism of the Catholic Church are in the process of being adopted and integrated into the religious education curricula of Catholic high schools across the country. Since its publication, little research has been conducted to find out how curriculum based on it has being implemented, and where religion teachers draw inspiration for developing their instructional methods with which to teach its contents. This multiple case study investigation provides a rich description of the instructional methodologies Catholic high school religion teachers use to implement the Framework and seeks to uncover whether there is any commonality among the cases. The study compares both the instructional methods and the influences religion teachers attribute for developing instructional methods. Three specific influences are examined in this study: formal education, professional development, and school environment. The instructional methods observed during this study were analyzed drawing from both catechetical and educational scholarship, and when compared across cases, reflect that the most commonly observed instructional methods rely on technology, and utilize group learning or human experience. In order to develop these instructional methods religion teachers relied primarily on their formal education. As a result, this study concludes that religion teacher participants contribute a wealth of resources for implementing the Framework, but could be better supported through formal education designed specifically to support the Framework's overarching goals.

Book excerpt: St. Pope John Paul II reminds us in Catechesi Tradendae that catechesis is a moment—“a very remarkable one—in the whole process of evangelization.” In other words, catechesis is an essential part of evangelization, not something separate from it. Therefore, it is critically important that catechetical leaders recognize how to effectively catechize in a way that advances the Church’s primary mission to evangelize. To that end, this third volume of The Effective Catechetical Leader will explore a Catholic understanding of evangelization grounded in Scripture and Tradition, how the New Evangelization supports and enhances today’s catechesis, the inseparable nature of content and methodology in catechesis, the absolute importance of adult catechesis, and so much more. The Effective Catechetical Leader series, developed in conjunction with the National Conference for Catechetical Leadership and written by some of the top catechetical leaders in the country, is the only series to encompass all the various aspects of catechetical leadership. This series provides the practical skills, strategies, and approaches that ensure successful parish faith formation in an evangelizing manner, which leads directly to a vibrant Church. From best practices to new approaches for proclaiming God’s word in a rapidly changing world, this groundbreaking series will empower catechetical leaders to excel at everything from administrative duties to effectively catechizing people of all ages within our diverse Church.

Book excerpt: Disciples of Christ come in all ages and colors, but they also come from different backgrounds and bring with them diverse gifts, needs, opportunities, and challenges. As a result, catechesis must never take the form of one-size-fits-all. While the Gospel message is eternal, our messaging (how we share that timeless message) needs to adapt to an ever-changing reality, or we risk being perceived as irrelevant. This sixth volume of The Effective Catechetical Leader takes a close look at the many groups of people to be catechized—from school-age children to young adults, from parents to the catechists themselves—and offers strategies and tips to effectively engage all of them in life-giving, Gospel-centered faith formation. The Effective Catechetical Leader series, developed in conjunction with the National Conference for Catechetical Leadership and written by some of the top catechetical leaders in the country, is the only series to encompass all the various aspects of catechetical leadership. Book excerpt: Danny Brocks Catholicity Aint What It Used to Be is a rich experience in practical theology, a theology for everyone, because it is a deeply personal reflection on the faith journey, the story of his own soul as a Catholic in the postVatican II church and in a very challenging postmodern culture. As Brock outlines the challenges of the New Evangelization facing teens, the Catholic school, religious educators, parents, and the institutional church, he describes vividly the mess we sometimes find ourselves in, and at the same time he suggests ways of stepping through that mess by bringing to life the beauty and richness of our Catholic faith and the joy of serving Jesus as we journey with young people in our Christian community. Brocks reflections serve as a GPS to help us recalculate where we find ourselves as church and in our culture today as the evangelizing community of Jesus. His unique charism in finding hope in the young persons he serves becomes a great gift of hope for the pilgrim church today. Book excerpt: (© 2015) The Subcommittee on the Catechism, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, has found that this catechetical high school text is in conformity with the Catechism of the Catholic Church and fulfills the requirements of Core Course IV of the Doctrinal Elements of a Curriculum Framework for the Development of Catechetical Materials for Young People of High School Age.Students deepen their understanding of Jesus Christ, the fullness of God's Revelation, as they encounter him in the living Body of Christ, the Catholic Church.Jesus and the Church: One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic supports Course IV of the USCCB curriculum and is the first high school textbook released by Ave Maria Press in its new Encountering Jesus series. As they engage with the content of this text, students will recognize Christ present and active in their lives through the visible and vibrant mission of Church, defined by her four characteristics--one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. While Jesus and the Church places the foundations of the Church in their historical and scriptural context, the textbook goes further by guiding students to recognize the sacred nature of the Church and engaging them to more actively participate in the living Body of Christ and serve as witnesses to the sacred Gospel in the world today.Simply put, the goal of the book--as in the Encountering Jesus series as a whole--is to change the lives of students by making real-life connections between what they are learning about the Church and how they encounter Jesus in the contemporary world.

Book excerpt: High school students deserve educations that honor and respect their cultural positionalities, of which religious beliefs are frequently an integral part. Almost 25% of students in Catholic high schools identify as non-Catholic, but the U.S. Catholic bishops have mandated that Catholic secondary theological education (through their 2008 Doctrinal Elements of a Curriculum Framework for the Development of Catechetical Materials for Young People of High School Age) be catechetical. In writing and promulgating this document, the bishops presupposed that Catholic schools' students are Catholic, or (should) desire to become Catholic. For decades, scholars have critiqued catechesis as an inappropriate mode of theological education for non-Catholic students. In Catholic schools, non-Catholic students are subject to systemic oppression on academic, religious, and cultural levels. The Framework fails religiously diverse students in its lack of relevance for and sensitivity to their beliefs. In this qualitative interview study, I interviewed five theology teachers in Pacific Northwest Catholic high schools. I investigated their goals for theological education of religiously diverse students, how they meet the needs of such students, and how they diverge from the bishops' Framework in their teaching. I discovered that: my participants' experiences and educational backgrounds influence their approaches to theological education; my participants oppose catechesis as a mode of theological education in secondary education and instead strive to make theology relevant, responsive, and sustaining of their students' diverse beliefs; and that my participants follow the Framework's general structure, but diverge from and/or adapt its content in critical ways.

"The definitive aim of catechesis is to put people not only in touch but in communion, in intimacy, with Jesus Christ." These words of Pope John Paul II are quoted in the first sentence of the United States Catholic Bishops Doctrinal Elements of a Curriculum Framework for the Development of Catechetical Materials for Young People of High School Age. The intention of the new Framework is similar: it provides the course structure and content instruction to serve as a way for high school students to know Jesus Christ, to grow in relationship with him, and to live according to the truth he has given us. After several consultations through its development with bishops, diocesan leaders, teachers, catechists, and publishers, the full body of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops unanimously approved the Framework in 2007. One of its first objectives was to provide guidance to publishers who create instructional materials for use both in Catholic high schools and parish youth ministry programs. Scpope and Sequence Besides providing doctrinal elements for a curriculum, the Framework also strongly suggests a sequence to shape a four-year, eight-semester course of catechetical studies. There are six coresemester-length courses that the bishops strongly recommend be offered in the order they appear in the Framework. Those courses are: I. The Revelation of Jesus Christ in Scripture The Scriptures trace the coming of Jesus, the Christ. II. Who Is Jesus Christ? Jesus is the ultimate revelation from God. III. The Mission of Jesus Christ (The Paschal Mystery) Our redemption only comes in and through Jesus. IV. Jesus Christ Continues the Mission in the Church. The Church is the Body of Christ where we meet Jesus today. V. Sacraments as Privileged Encounters with Jesus Christ We can encounter Christ in a full and complete way in the Sacraments. VI. Life in Jesus Christ There are moral principles that govern the life of Christ's disciples. In addition five possible elective courses appear in this Framework as options for the other two semesters. Those courses have been titled Sacred Scripture, History of the Catholic Church, Living as a Disciple of Jesus Christ in Society (Social Justice), Responding to the Call of Jesus Christ (Marriage and Holy Orders), Ecumenical and Interreligious Issues Online Resources Include: - PowerPoint - Presentation - Study Guide - Crossword Puzzles - Review Questions - Prayer Services - And More! Book excerpt: (©2013) The Subcommittee on the Catechism, United States Catholic Bishops, has found that this catechetical high school text is in conformity with the Catechism of the Catholic Church and fulfills the requirements of Elective Course A of the Doctrinal Elements of a Curriculum Framework for the Development of the Catechetical Materials for Young People of High School Age.Sacred Scripture: A Catholic Study of God's Word presents the Bible to students as a living source of God's Revelation to us. It gathers the two covenants of Scripture and the seventy-two books of the Bible under the umbrella of Church teaching, which holds that in Sacred Scripture, "God speaks only one single Word, his one Utterance in whom he expresses himself completely" (CCC, 102).This introduction to the biblical texts is both a companion for prayerful study and a survey of the context, message, and authorship of each book. It also provides students with a plan for reading and studying the Bible in concert with the Holy Spirit and Church teaching. The text provides historical context for biblical literature and its analysis is mindful that Scripture must be read within the living Tradition of the Church; in so doing, the text examines the relationship between Scripture and the doctrines of the Catholic faith. While modern historical-critical scholarship is not ignored, the text is balanced by emphasis on the multiple senses of Scripture: literal, spiritual, allegorical, moral, and anagogical.

Here it is - the first new Catechism of the Catholic Church in more than 400 years, a complete summary of what Catholics around the world commonly believe. The Catechism draws on the Bible, the Mass, the Sacraments, Church tradition and teaching, and the lives of saints. It comes with a complete index, footnotes and cross-references for a fuller understanding of every subject. The word catechism means "instruction" - this book will serve as the standard for all future catechisms. Using the tradition of explaining what the Church believes (the Creed), what she celebrates (the Sacraments), what she lives (the Commandments), and what she prays (the Lord's Prayer), the Catechism of the Catholic Church offers challenges for believers and answers for all those interested in learning about the mystery of the Catholic faith. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is a positive, coherent and contemporary map for our spiritual journey toward transformation.
