Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adae Murimuth Continuatio Chronicarum: Robertus De Avesbury De Gestis Mirabilibus Regis Edwardi Tertii This new arrangement brought him into trouble almost at the outset. His first year, 1303, he rightly styles the 3lst year of Edward I. His year 1304 he begins with Michaelmas 1303, thus anticipating by three months, and he places it in the 32ud regnal year, which, however, did not commence till the 2oth November. His year 1305 begins with Michaelmas 1304, and is styled the 33rd regnal year; and it is carried on to Michaelmas 1306, thus really embracing two years. When, therefore, he begins his year 1306, he is nine months in arrear; but from this point he becomes con sistent, and always dates his year from the Michaelmas Of the actual year. It is scarcely necessary to add that the confusion in the papal years is as bad as in the rogue] years. And this perverse chronological craze answered no purpose whatever. Murimuth's system was soon found to be inconvenient, as is evident from the not infrequent interpolation of the true year in different mss. Book Synopsis Scotland's Second War of Independence, 1332-1357 by : Iain A. MacInnes
Download or read book Scotland's Second War of Independence, 1332-1357 written by Iain A. MacInnes and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2016 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Full-length study of the warfare between England and Scotland in the mid fourteenth century. The Second Scottish War of Independence began in 1332, only four years after the previous conflict had ended. Fought once more for the continued freedom of Scotland from English conquest, the war also witnessed a revival of Scottish civil conflict as the Bruce-Balliol fight for the Scottish crown recommenced once more. Breaking out sporadically until peace was agreed in 1357, the Second Scottish War is a conflict that resides still in the shadow of that which preceded it: compared to the wars of William Wallace and Robert Bruce, Edward I and Edward II, this second phase of Anglo-Scottish warfare is neither well-known nor well-understood. This book sets out to examine in detail the military campaigns of this period, to uncover the histories of those who fought in the war, and to analyse the behaviour of combatants from both sides during ongoing periods of both civil war and Anglo-Scottish conflict. It analyses contemporary records and literary evidence in order to reconstruct the history of this conflict and reconsiders current debates regarding: the capabilities of the Scottish military; the nature of contemporary combat; the ambitions and abilities of fourteenth-century military leaders; and the place of chivalry on the medieval battlefield. Dr Iain A. MacInnes is a Lecturer and Programme Leader in Scottish History at the UHI Centre forHistory, University of the Highlands and Islands.

Book Synopsis Chronicon Anonymi Cantuariensis by : Chris Given-Wilson
Download or read book Chronicon Anonymi Cantuariensis written by Chris Given-Wilson and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2008-06-19 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first complete edition of the Chronicon Anonymi Cantuariensis, a contemporary narrative that provides valuable insights into medieval war and diplomacy, written at Canterbury shortly after the mid-fourteenth century. The previous edition, published in 1914, was based on a manuscript from which the text for the years 1357 to 1364 was missing. Presented here in full with a modern English translation, the chronicle provides a key narrative of military and political events covering the years from 1346 to 1365. Concentrating principally on the campaigns of the Hundred Years War and their impact upon the inhabitants of south-east England, the author took advantage of his position on the main news route between London and Paris to provide a detailed account of a crucial phase in British and European history.
