Book excerpt: Educates readers about Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), ( acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine), and how women's health problems are effectively treated holistically versus the typical Western, compartmentalized approach. Acquire a basic understanding of TCM - what it is and how it works - as well as its benefits, risks and potential for treatment. Potential benefits of using TCM decrease the discouragement and futility felt by many women who cope with chronic health problems like menstrual irregularities, infertility, insomnia, pregnancy related issues and menopause. Women do not usually consider TCM as a treatment alternative until after receiving failed Western treatment. TCM can be a primary part of health care. Information and knowledge about TCm is lacking. TCM can help many women overcome and resolve health concerns. TCM's potential for early detection, strengthening of the immune system, reversal of symptoms and prevention of disease unfortunately remains unnoticed. * Broadens understanding of how TCM and western medicine differ in diagnosis and treatment. A holistic versus compartmentalized approach. * Explains how acupuncture systems work in easy-to-understand language. * Outlines gynecological, reproductive, and menopausal disorders more naturally and completely. * Approaches disorders including PMS, painful, heavy, irregular menstruation, PCOS, infertility, and pregnancy-related issues from a TCM perspective. * Shares nutritional, lifestyle factors and tips to help you make better, more informed choices about your health. * Discusses other health issues including insomnia, incontinence, vaginal itching, heart disease, and headaches. * Explains how TCM considers the impact of lifestyle, diet and nutritional choices and discusses these as part of the treatment plan. .

Book excerpt: One of Canada's most trusted and beloved health practitioners introduces American women to the wisdom of traditional Chinese medicine and the time-tested practices that have helped optimize physical and emotional health for centuries. Since establishing her practice in Canada twelve years ago, Dr. Xiaolan Zhao has treated thousands of women suffering from fatigue, PMS, infertility, depression, cancer, menopausal symptoms and other gynecological disorders - health problems that are all too common in the West but less so in China, where traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been an integral part of women's lives for thousands of years. As a physician originally trained in Western medicine who later took up the practice of TCM, Dr. Zhao has seen how effective the Chinese approach is for her patients, and her book will help American women incorporate its wisdom and practices in our lives. Sharing stories from her own life and the lives of her patients, Dr. Zhao shows that we have nothing to reject about our feminine selves, and explains how we can develop new relationships with our bodies and our emotions. There is so much every woman can do in terms of ongoing and preventative self-care to improve her health and vitality and prevent illness. By making simple changes in diet, exercise routine, sex life and the way we deal with stress and our emotions, we can profoundly improve our health now and into the future.

Book excerpt: One of Canada’s most trusted and beloved health practitioners introduces Western women to the wisdom of traditional Chinese medicine and the time-tested practices that have helped optimize physical and emotional health for centuries. Since establishing her practice in Canada twelve years ago, Dr. Xiaolan Zhao has treated thousands of women suffering from fatigue, PMS, infertility, depression, menopausal symptoms and other gynecological disorders — health problems that are all too common in the West but less so in China, where traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been an integral part of women’s lives for thousands of years. As a physician originally trained in Western medicine who later took up the practice of TCM, Dr. Zhao has seen how effective the Chinese approach is for her patients, and she’d like to see more Canadian women incorporating its wisdom and practices in their own lives, as a complement to their regular health care. In Reflections of the Moon on Water, she explains the unique philosophy behind the healing tradition, a way of thinking that is liberating and empowering for women. "Many Westerners think Chinese medicine sounds too complicated or too esoteric. They find discussions of yin and yang, or the life energy known as qi intimidating. In fact, Chinese medicine is very simple and accessible. Many of the herbs we use are ordinary ones. Sometimes, I might treat a patient’s sinus condition with eucalyptus or other familiar herbs, and she’ll say, "Oh that smells just like what my grandmother used to give me." So much of Chinese medicine is based on intuition and common sense. Although the history behind TCM is 5,000 years old — 4,500 years older than our scientific traditions — it is knowledge open to anyone." —excerpt from Reflections of the Moon on Water

Book excerpt: Menopausal symptoms can significantly reduce women's quality of life, and may last for several years. Women who seek relief from symptoms often turn to complementary therapies, including Chinese medicine. The latest in the Evidence-based Clinical Chinese Medicine series uses a 'whole evidence' approach to summarise the management of menopausal symptoms with Chinese medicine. The first chapter describes the conventional medicine understanding of menopause, including common signs and symptoms, diagnosis and treatment. The Chinese medicine conceptualisation of menopause, both in contemporary and classical literature, is reviewed and discussed. The evidence from clinical studies is reviewed using internationally accepted scientific methods. Systematic reviews describe the treatments used in clinical studies, and analyse the effectiveness of Chinese herbal medicines, acupuncture and related therapies, other Chinese medicine therapies, and combinations of Chinese medicine therapies. Experimental studies that describe the potential mechanisms of action of key herbs are summarised. The final chapter synthesises the current evidence and offers suggestions for contemporary clinical practice and future research. This book is a handy desktop reference for both clinicians and students of Chinese and integrative medicine. It provides a comprehensive synthesis of both traditional and contemporary knowledge that can inform clinical decision-making.

Here, for the first time, Integrative Women's Health weaves together the best of conventional treatments with mind-body interventions, nutritional strategies, herbal therapies, dietary supplements, acupuncture, and manual medicine, providing clinicians with a roadmap for practicing comprehensive integrative care. Presenting the best evidence in a concise, accessible format, and written exclusively by female clinicians, this text addresses many aspects of women's health, including feminine perspectives on aging, spirituality and sexuality, specific recommendations for the treatment of cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, HIV, headaches, multiple sclerosis, depression, anxiety, and cancer, as well as integrative approaches to premenstrual syndrome, pregnancy, menopause, fibroids, and endometriosis. Homeopathic, Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine practitioners provide insight into the ways in which these systems manage reproductive conditions. As leading educators in integrative medicine, editors Dr. Maizes and Dr. Low Dog demonstrate how clinicians can implement their recommendations in practice, but they also go beyond practical care to examine how to motivate patients, enhance a health history, and understand the spiritual dimensions of healing.

Readers interested in the role of herbs and foods in healing will also find much to learn here, as I have. . . . A fine work.”—Annemarie Colbin, author of Food and Healing The promise and mystery of Chinese medicine has intrigued and fascinated Westerners ever since the “Bamboo Curtain” was lifted in the early 1970s. Now, in Between Heaven and Earth, two of the foremost American educators and healers in the Chinese medical profession demystify this centuries-old approach to health. Harriet Beinfeld and Efrem Korngold, pioneers in the practice of acupuncture and herbal medicine in the United States for over eighteen years, explain the philosophy behind Chinese medicine, how it works and what it can do. Combining Eastern traditions with Western sensibilities in a unique blend that is relevant today, Between Heaven and Earth addresses three vital areas of Chinese medicine—theory, therapy, and types—to present a comprehensive, yet understandable guide to this ancient system. Whether you are a patient with an aggravating complaint or a curious intellectual seeker, Between Heaven and Earth opens the door to a vast storehouse of knowledge that bridges the gap between mind and body, theory and practice, professional and self-care, East and West. “Groundbreaking . . . Here at last is a complete and readable guide to Chinese medicine.”—San Francisco Chronicle

The reasons for this range from conditions such as Endometriosis or Polycystic ovarian syndrome to the more insidious "unexplained infertility." While this book does examine the basic theory and practice of Allopathic medicine as it relates to gynaecology much of the focus is placed on Naturopathic or Traditional Chinese methods of preventing and treating many of these common gynaecological conditions. The whole focus of this approach is that it allows you to play an active part (and take positive control) of your own treatment. In the book some of the areas covered are: A look at the most common tests and an explanation of what the results indicate. A brief look at the theories underlying Traditional Chinese and Naturopathic medicine and how they can be applied pre and post conception. How common foods can be used to prevent or treat many common gynaecological problems. How you can improve your odds of success with IVF by adjusting your diet. Recipes with step by step instructions are included. About the author Eddie Dowd is a full time professional practitioner specialising in women's health. In clinic he uses an integrated approach combining Dietary therapy, Herbal medicine and Acupuncture alongside and tailored to fit in with whatever treatments a patient may be receiving.

This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infertility affects more than 3 million married couples in the United States. This study explored the use of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for treating female infertility. Surveys queried allopathic practitioners and TCM practitioners regarding their perceived knowledge and use of TCM. The vast majority of allopathic practitioners referred patients to acupuncturists and believed that acupuncture helped patients. The majority of respondents identified a trend for treating female infertility with TCM and Western medical procedures. The majority of respondents supported the concurrent use of allopathic protocols and TCM but did not support the concurrent use of TCM and Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM). More than 62% of respondents expressed familiarity with clinical studies that used TCM for treating stress, depression, and irregular menstrual cycles. Positive results from evidence-based studies would likely encourage allopathic practitioners to use TCM and adopt a more holistic, collaborative approach for treating female infertility.
