Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive review of the interaction between cancer research and mathematical methods for both investigators in the field and newcomers just entering it. The book's primary focus is on the use of computer-assisted mathematical modeling in carcinogenesis and cancer prevention. The first two chapters include a general presentation of the carcinogenesis and anticarcinogenesis molecular mechanisms, followed by a discussion of mathematical models of triggers for gene regulation. A description of the prediction of both carcinogenicity and mutagenicity using quantum mechanical, topological or physico-chemical indices is presented, as well as a discussion of the QSAR analysis of carcinogenesis-inhibiting compounds (known as blocking or suppressive agents).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The efficiency of transport systems depends on their relevance to those using them. All too often, however, transport policies are implemented at great expense without due regard to the behaviour, and consequent needs, of transport users. Behavioural Research for Transport Policy will improve the lines of communication between behavioural researchers and policy makers. The papers presented at the 1985 International Conference on Travel Behaviour cover the wide range of factors which need to be taken into account when gauging the effect behaviour has on transport requirements and usage. Contributions discuss the variety and usefulness of different survey frameworks; the lifestyle factors affecting transport use, and the problems of cost effectiveness in both survey techniques and the implementation of transport policy.

This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Context-aware systems can be used in a multitude of scenarios and applications. Examples include a pedestrian safety system which can help to detect a potential upcoming accident based on the knowledge of the pedestrian’s activity. In the field of human activity recognition, a majority of research focuses on long-lasting and continuous activities, such as walking or attending a dinner. Yet, the recognition of short and non-periodic activities, such as stepping onto the road, is still poorly understood. Due to the non-periodic nature, missing or incorrect recognitions of such activities imply that the entire activity is not recognized and remains unknown. This thesis focuses on short and non-periodic activities, gives a definition and investigates three challenges in their recognition: inconsistent sensor data, overrepresentation of periodic activities and evaluation of the recognition. For each challenge a possible solution is proposed. It is shown that applying these solutions addresses the challenges and improves the recognition rates of short and non-periodic activities up to 20%.
