For the 3-D simulations the Large Eddy Simulation model is used for the calculation of flow field variables within Fluent, however an introductory RANS analysis is performed as well. Control schemes involving suction jets are investigated. Aspects of the flow pattern such as shedding and streamlines are studied in depth in an effort to determine the most efficient application of the suction controls. These schemes seek to reduce the aerodynamic drag without constraints on the basic design of the model itself. An average of 10\% drag reduction is recorded.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interest in the field of active flow control (AFC) is steadily increasing. In - cent years the number of conferences and special sessions devoted to AFC org- ized by various institutions around the world continuously rises. New advanced courses for AFC are offered by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Ast- nautics (AIAA), the European Research Community on Flow, Turbulence and Combustion (ERCOFTAC), the International Centre for Mechanical Sciences (CISM), the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (VKI), to name just a few. New books on AFC are published by prominent colleagues of our field and even a new periodical, the ‘International Journal of Flow Control’, appeared. Despite these many activities in AFC it was felt that a follow-up of the highly successful ‘ACTIVE FLOW CONTROL’ Conference held in Berlin in 2006 was appropriate. As in 2006, ‘ACTIVE FLOW CONTROL II’ consisted only of invited lectures. To sti- late multidisciplinary discussions between experimental, theoretical and numerical fluid dynamics, aerodynamics, turbomachinary, mathematics, control engineering, metrology and computer science parallel sessions were excluded. Unfortunately, not all of the presented papers made it into this volume. As the preparation and printing of a book takes time and as this volume should be available at the conf- ence, the Local Organizing Committee had to set up a very ambitious time sch- ule which could not be met by all contributors.

Book excerpt: The aim of this Ph.D. thesis, "Effects of flow control on flow past bluff bodies" is to study and analyzes the effects of Flow Control on various aspects and proverbs of flow past bluff bodies. Flow control techniques are presently researched and studied across the world to gauge their effectiveness in altering flow properties and patterns in different flow scenarios. The inspiration for the present work is derived from automobile industry, as analyzing the flow over backward step and inclined step shall help in understanding the characteristics of the rear vehicle wake. Since a considerable percentage of the energy needed to propel the vehicle is dissipated by the vorticity generated in the rear of the vehicle, hence it is of utmost importance to understand the properties of the wake. In the present study various possibilities were explored for application and examine effectiveness of active flow control techniques in bluff bodies to increase the aerodynamic efficiency. The primary aim of the study is to reduce the drag acting on bluff bodies by determining an effective active flow control technique and configuration. Two different kinds of Active Flow Control techniques have been used in this thesis namely, "Zero Net Mass Flow Actuator" and "Fluidic Actuator". The characteristics of laminar and turbulent boundary layer were analyzed and the effectiveness of flow control in delaying the detachment of the boundary layer was analyzed. Numerical simulation programs were developed in C language for simulating various cases in the thesis and a 3D LES turbulence modeling finite volume code was developed using Smagorinsky-Lilly model in C language for the simulating the flow over backward step in turbulence regime. All the numerical simulation codas were validated with previous research works. The thesis is divided into five chapters analyzing flow over square cylinder, backward step and inclined step geometries in 2D and 3D in laminar and turbulent regimes.

Book excerpt: This is the first textbook on a generally applicable control strategy for turbulence and other complex nonlinear systems. The approach of the book employs powerful methods of machine learning for optimal nonlinear control laws. This machine learning control (MLC) is motivated and detailed in Chapters 1 and 2. In Chapter 3, methods of linear control theory are reviewed. In Chapter 4, MLC is shown to reproduce known optimal control laws for linear dynamics (LQR, LQG). In Chapter 5, MLC detects and exploits a strongly nonlinear actuation mechanism of a low-dimensional dynamical system when linear control methods are shown to fail. Experimental control demonstrations from a laminar shear-layer to turbulent boundary-layers are reviewed in Chapter 6, followed by general good practices for experiments in Chapter 7. The book concludes with an outlook on the vast future applications of MLC in Chapter 8. Matlab codes are provided for easy reproducibility of the presented results. The book includes interviews with leading researchers in turbulence control (S. Bagheri, B. Batten, M. Glauser, D. Williams) and machine learning (M. Schoenauer) for a broader perspective. All chapters have exercises and supplemental videos will be available through YouTube.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results from a box-shaped vehicle (ref. 15) indicate that substantial differences sometimes exist between the drag characteristics of highway-sized rolling vehicles and similarly shaped subscale models. In light of these findings, and because high volume box-like shapes are aerodynamically inefficient, further work has been done with modified versions of the vehicle described in reference 15. The modifications consisted of rounding the horizontal and vertical corners of the front of the vehicle, rounding these corners on the rear of the vehicle, sealing the bottom of the chassis with a full-length fairing and then using a 3/4-length underbody fairing. Drag results from these configurations are compared with the reference 15 data for the vehicle with all corners square and vertical corners rounded. Test velocities ranged up to 65 miles per hour and the corresponding Reynolds numbers ranged up to 1 x 107 based on vehicle length. A simple coast-down technique was used to define the drag.

Book excerpt: These Proceedings contain the papers and oral discussions presented at the Symposium on AERODYNAMIC DRAG MECHANISMS of Bluff Bodies and Road Vehides held at the General Motors Research Laboratories in Warren, Michigan, on September 27 and 28, 1976. This international, invitational Symposium was the twentieth in an annual series, each one having been in a different technical discipline. The Symposia provide a forum for areas of science and technology that are of timely interest to the Research Laboratories as weIl as the technical community at large, and in which personnel of the Laboratories are actively involved. The Symposia furnish an opportunity for the exchange of ideas and current knowledge between participating research specialists from educational, industrial arid governmental institutions and serve to stimulate future research activity. The present world-wide energy situation makes it highly desirable to reduce the force required to move road vehicles through the atmosphere. A significant amount of the total energy consumed for transportation is expended in overcoming the aerodynamic resistance to motion of these vehicles. Reductions in this aerodynamic drag can therefore have a large impact on ground transportation energy requirements. Although aerodynamic development work on road vehides has been performed for many years, it has not been widely reported or accompanied by much basic research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses various passive and active techniques for controlling unsteady flow dynamics and associated coupled mechanics of fluid-structure interaction. Coupled multiphysics and multidomain simulations are emerging and challenging research areas, which have received significant attention during the past decade. One of the most common multiphysics and multidomain problems is fluid-structure interaction (FSI), i.e., the study of coupled physical systems involving fluid and a structure that have a mechanical influence on each other. Regardless of the application area, the investigation toward modeling of fluid-structure interaction and the underlying mechanisms in dealing with coupled fluid-structure instability with real-world applications remains a challenge to scientists and engineers. This book is designed for students and researchers who seek knowledge of computational modeling and control strategies for fluid-structure interaction. Specifically, this book provides a comprehensive review of the underlying unsteady physics and coupled mechanical aspects of the fluid-structure interaction of freely vibrating bluff bodies, the self-induced flapping of thin flexible structures, and aeroelasticity of shell structures. Understanding flow-induced loads and vibrations can lead to safer and cost-effective structures, especially for light and high-aspect ratio structures with increased flexibility and harsh environmental conditions. Using the body-fitted and moving mesh formulations, the physical insights associated with structure-to-fluid mass ratios, Reynolds number, nonlinear structural deformation, proximity interference, near-wall contacts, free-surface, and other interacting physical fields are covered in this book. In conjunction with the control techniques, data-driven model reduction approaches based on subspace projection and deep neural calculus are covered for low-dimensional modeling of unsteady fluid-structure interaction.
