Book excerpt: An examination was made of the metal strips of copper, brass, aluminum, stainless steel, mild steel, mild steel coated with acid-proof black paint and mild steel plated with copper, cadmium, nickel and zinc after storage for two years at atmospheric temperature and 50C. in contact with the explosives PETN, 50/50 Pentolite, Haleite, 60/40 Ednatol, 75/25 Tetrytol and RDX compositions A and B, both dry and containing approximately 0.5 percent moisture. After two years of continuous storage, the dry explosives had little or no effect on any of the metals. The action of the moist explosives on these same metals varied from a light to a heavy tarnishing effect with the exception of moist Haleite and 60/40 Ednatol, which had a decidedly heavier corrosive action on all metals except stainless steel. Stainless steel and aluminum appear to be the most corrosion-resistant of the metals considered. The report also contains the results of similar tests made using magnesium metal and a magnesium-aluminum alloy, J-1. It is considered that both are also satisfactory for use in ammunition components with all the explosives tested except Amatol.

Book excerpt: This Manual is issued under the authority of, and in accordance with, DoD Instruction 4145.26, "DoD Contractors Safety Requirements for Ammunition and Explosives," April 4, 1996. The Manual provides safety standards common to DoD and private industry ammunition and explosives (A&E),, operations and facilities. DoD 6055.9-STD, "DoD Ammunition and Explosives Safety Standards, October 1992, establishes these safety standards and serves as the primary source document from which this unclassified Manual is derived. The DoD Supplement to the Federal Acquisition Regulation require' contracting officers to incorporate this Manual in A&E procurement actions to achieve parity between contractor and DoD component compliance. The purchasing activity may include additional A&E or related safety requirements as it deems necessary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive coverage of weapon damage effects on a variety of objects Damaging Effects of Weapons and Ammunition delivers a thorough exploration of a range of issues related to the effects of ammunition and weapons. The book includes coverage of the basic concepts of the theory of efficiency and the physical foundations of the functional and damaging effects of fragments, shaped charges, high-explosive and penetrating weapons. The author discusses the calculation formulas used to evaluation the parameters of damage fields and their interaction with various objects. Additionally, the book expands on the damage criteria of weapons, the characteristics of the vulnerability of objects with respect to a variety of damaging factors, dependencies for assessing safe distances, and the resistance of various structures to the effects of explosion and impact. Damaging Effects of Weapons and Ammunition also offers: Detailed calculation methods indicating areas of application and the necessary units of used quantities Extensive examples of classic designs of ammunition from around the world Discussions of the characterization of various types of ammunition, including high-explosive, fragment, penetrative, and shaped charges A chapter on the numerical simulation of high-speed processes Perfect for technical specialists working in the fields of explosion safety and explosives, Damaging Effects of Weapons and Ammunition also belongs in the libraries of researchers and students studying explosion phenomena, explosive technologies, explosion safety, and materials science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty-one experiments have been performed in a series where typical explosive formulations for weapons were encased in steel vessels and impacted by up to six .30-caliber bullets fired at 1.2-s intervals. We have observed that detonation can occur on the second bullet impact if the high-explosive configuration (detonator, booster, and main charge) is complete and tested at an elevated temperature. So far, shots with some mock parts have exploded (no detonation) after several bullet impacts, where the response to preceeding bullets ranged from no reaction to violent deflagration. When RX-26-AF was substituted for the booster explosive LX-10, there was reduced violence. Conversely, when we completely replaced all the high-explosive components with a solid filling of LX-10, we discovered a charge-size limitation where detonation occurred on the first bullet impact. To help quantify the violence exhibited by these detonations, we purposely detonated one shot and compared the high-speed camera records and recovery samples.

Book excerpt: The U.S. military has a stockpile of approximately 400,000 tons of excess, obsolete, or unserviceable munitions. About 60,000 tons are added to the stockpile each year. Munitions include projectiles, bombs, rockets, landmines, and missiles. Open burning/open detonation (OB/OD) of these munitions has been a common disposal practice for decades, although it has decreased significantly since 2011. OB/OD is relatively quick, procedurally straightforward, and inexpensive. However, the downside of OB and OD is that they release contaminants from the operation directly into the environment. Over time, a number of technology alternatives to OB/OD have become available and more are in research and development. Alternative technologies generally involve some type of contained destruction of the energetic materials, including contained burning or contained detonation as well as contained methods that forego combustion or detonation. Alternatives for the Demilitarization of Conventional Munitions reviews the current conventional munitions demilitarization stockpile and analyzes existing and emerging disposal, treatment, and reuse technologies. This report identifies and evaluates any barriers to full-scale deployment of alternatives to OB/OD or non-closed loop incineration/combustion, and provides recommendations to overcome such barriers.
