Book excerpt: Aromatic nitrogen donor (pyridine based) ligands have shown improved binding and dissociation kinetics over their aliphatic counterparts, and competitive complexation strength that make them a suitable replacement for traditional PAPC ligands in TALSPEAK and TALSPEAK-like extraction systems. To this end new pyridine and bipyridine based ligands have been synthesized to be used as actinide selective complexants when paired with a TALSPEAK or TALSPEAK-like solvent. Aqueous solubility limitations inherent to pyridine based ligands have been overcome by the addition of solubilizing functional groups such as 1-methylpiperazine, and iminodiacetic acid. Newly synthesized pyridine ligands have been characterized and evaluated in TALSPEAK or TALSPEAK-like combined extractant systems TALSPEAK-MME (Mixed Monofunctional Extractant) and ALSEP (Actinide Lanthanide SEParation) using radiotracer and stable metal solvent extraction studies. The findings of these studies and their implications to MA/Ln separation techniques are discussed in this dissertation.

It was conceived partly to continue an informal decennial sequence of sym posia dedicated to the topic off element separations. A lot has changed in the world of f ele ments over the last ten years, precipitating a change in emphasis which should be evident to most practitioners in the field. Production and reprocessing of nuclear fuels are no longer the principal drivers of f element separation technology. Separations technology for environment restoration, waste disposal, and the preparation of high purity lanthanides are now the defming parameters in this important field. These imperatives are reflected in the contributions to this volume. The symposium itself must be considered a success, as the attendance at all sessions was above expectations, despite the fact that it was conducted on the last two days of a large five day meeting. Our thanks to the speakers for their quality presentations, and to the audience who persevered to the end of a long meeting and against the temptation of the excellent weather of San Diego in the springtime. Book excerpt: The potential hazard posed to future generations by long-lived radionuclides such as the transuranic elements (TRU) is perceived as a major problem associated with the use of nuclear power. TRU wastes have to remain isolated from the environment for ''geological'' periods of time. The costs of building, maintaining, and operating a ''geological TRU repository'' can be very high. Therefore, there are significant economical advantages in segregating the relatively low volume of TRU wastes from other nuclear wastes. The chemical behavior of lanthanides and actinides, 4f and 5f elements respectively, is rather similar. As a consequence, the separation of these two groups is difficult. The ''TALSPEAK'' process (Trivalent Actinide Lanthanide Separations by Phosphorus-reagent Extraction from Aqueous Complexes) is one of the few means available to separate the trivalent actinides from the lanthanides. The method is based on the preferential complexation of the trivalent actinides by an aminopolyacetic acid. Cold experiments showed that by using citric acid the deleterious effects produced by impurities such as zirconium are greatly reduced.
