Book excerpt: The onslaught of literary theory in the post-modernist world of letters has left no institution of learning untouched. But Comparative Literature has had a paradoxical role in this firestorm of new ideas and radical challenges to established modes of study. On the one hand it was in North American centers and departments of Comparative Literature that Russian theoreticians like Lotman and Bakhtin, Czech scholars like Mukarovsky and Dolezel, the Konstanz theoreticians Iser and Jauss and the long list of French critics Barthes, Todorov, Kristeva, Genette and the master semiotician Greimas as well as such intellectual leaders as Lacan, Derrida, Foucault and Ricoeur found an enthusiastic North American following. On the other hand the international established circle of scholars who considered themselves to be the founders of a new more rigorous comparative mode of study were almost overnight upstaged by the radical scepticism that challenged and questioned, above all questioned the very foundations of literary scholarship. This volume is not an attempt at either compromise or surrender by either side. Our aim has been to bring together a representative selection from both sides in reasoned dialogue so that the participants and all who work in Comparative Literature will be more informed about the other side and have a clearer perception of their basis for disagreement and possible agreement. It is only through debates of this nature that the discipline will come of age and develop a coherent theory on its aims and methods.

Download or read book Fachsprachen written by Lothar Hoffmann and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 1998 with total page 1390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Stratified Modernism by : Sasha Colby
Download or read book Stratified Modernism written by Sasha Colby and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes an alternative modernist tradition, a line of writers captured by the archaeological project and the poetic possibilities it created. This tradition spans from Théophile Gautier's mid-nineteenth-century passion for Egyptology to Charles Olson's literal excavations on the Yucatan peninsula in the 1950s. With attention to the historical development of archaeology, the author argues that the archaeological became a rich site of cultural fantasy, a location where modernity's alternatives could be considered, imagined, and transcribed. These models, taking their cue from new archaeological dynamics, include the ushering of primal intensities into the present, the tapping of the subterranean unconscious, and the decipherment of an original poetic language. Ranging from psychic excavations to the reactivation of political templates, the plumbing of the archaeological landscape became a key posture in modernist development, which the author pursues through the work of both twentieth-century modernists and their nineteenth-century substrata. Ambitious in scope, this book provides a compelling argument about the role of archaeology in the modernist literary imagination and the century-long evolution of the poetics of excavation.
Book Synopsis Knights at Court by : Aldo Scaglione
Download or read book Knights at Court written by Aldo Scaglione and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knights at Court is a grand tour and survey of manners, manhood, and court life in the Middle Ages, like no other in print. Composed on an epic canvas, this authoritative work traces the development of court culture and its various manifestations from the latter years of the Holy Roman Empire (ca. A.D. 1000) to the Italian Renaissance of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Leading medievalist and Renaissance scholar Aldo Scaglione offers a sweeping sociological view of three geographic areas that reveals a surprising continuity of courtly forms and motifs: German romances; the lyrical and narrative literature of northern and southern France; Italy's chivalric poetry. Scaglione discusses a broad number of texts, from early Norman and Flemish baronial chronicles to the romances of Chrétien de Troyes, the troubadours and Minnesingers. He delves into the Niebelungenlied, Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio, and an array of treatises on conduct down to Castiglione and his successors. All these works and Scaglione's superior scholarship attest to the enduring power over minds and hearts of a mentality that issued from a small minority of people—the courtiers and knights—in central positions of leadership and power. Knights at Court is for all scholars and students interested in "the civilizing process." This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1991.
Book Synopsis Translation and Literary Studies by : Marella Feltrin-Morris
Download or read book Translation and Literary Studies written by Marella Feltrin-Morris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By nature a transdisciplinary area of inquiry, translation lends itself to being investigated at its intersection with other fields of study. Translation and Literary Studies seeks to highlight the manifold connections between translation and notions of gender, dialectics, agency, philosophy and power. The volume also offers a timely homage to renowned translation theorist Marilyn Gaddis Rose, who was at the forefront of the group of scholars who initiated and helped to institutionalize translation studies. Inspired by Gaddis Rose’s work, and particularly by her concept of stereoscopic reading, the volume is dynamically complementary to the burgeoning contemporary field of global comparative literature, underscoring the diversity of critical literary thought and theory worldwide. Arranged thematically around questions of translation as literary and cultural criticism, as epistemology, and as poetics and politics, and dealing with works within and beyond the Western tradition, the essays in the volume illustrate the multi-voiced spectrum of literary translation studies today.
