Book excerpt: Located 400 meters below sea level, at the tectonically active irregular boundary between the Mediterranean and Arabic plates, the Dead Sea is the site of many interesting phenomena. It provides a modern analog for ancient pull-apart basins and allows researchers to examine the process of evaporite deposition from deep water. It also offers insight into the adaptive ability of the life form living in the hypersaline brine. This book, based on a conference held in Tel Aviv in December 1993, focuses on the geophysics, geochemistry, hydrology, and climatology of the Dead Sea region.

Download or read book The Dead Sea and the Jordan River written by Barbara Kreiger and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-21 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries travelers have been drawn to the stunning and mysterious Dead Sea and Jordan River, a region which is unlike any other on earth in its religious and historical significance. In this exceptionally engaging and readable book, Barbara Kreiger chronicles the natural and human history of these storied bodies of water, drawing on accounts by travelers, pilgrims, and explorers from ancient times to the present. She conveys the blend of spiritual, touristic, and scientific motivations that have driven exploration and describes the modern exploitation of the lake and the surrounding area through mineral extraction and agriculture. Today, both lake and river are in crisis, and stewardship of these water resources is bound up with political conflicts in the region. The Dead Sea and the Jordan River combines history, literature, travelogue, and natural history in a way that makes it hard to put down.

But Fanny has promised to try. In addition, Fanny is determined to find out about her brother Albert's suspicious death in Israel some thirty years earlier. Fanny thinks it's long past time to discover if there is any truth to rumors of her brother's great disgrace. Helping a nervous young man to get a standby seat on her flight, soon leads to a harrowing adventure involving forgery, espionage, kidnapping, the Dead Sea Scrolls, murder and action.

Book Synopsis The Dead Sea Genesis Apocryphon by : Daniel Machiela
Download or read book The Dead Sea Genesis Apocryphon written by Daniel Machiela and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-10-23 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The so-called Genesis Apocryphon (1Q20) from Qumran Cave 1 has suffered from decades of neglect, due in large part to its poor state of preservation. As part of a resurgent scholarly interest in the Apocryphon, and its prominent position among the Aramaic Dead Sea Scrolls, this volume presents a fresh transcription, translation, and exstenive textual notes drawing on close study of the original manuscript, all available photographs, and previous publications. In addition, a detailed analysis of columns 13-15 and their relation to the oft-cited parallel in the Book of Jubilees reveals a number of ways in which the two works differ, thereby highlighting several distinctive features of the Genesis Apocryphon. The result is a reliable text edition and a fuller understanding of the message conveyed by this fragmentary but fascinating retelling of Genesis.
