Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acclaimed author of Walking the Americas shares his epic journey through the war-torn Arabian Peninsula in this fascinating travelogue. Following in the footsteps of famed explorers such as Lawrence of Arabia and Wilfred Thesiger, British explorer Levison Wood brings us along on his most complex expedition yet: a circumnavigation of the Arabian Peninsula. Starting in September 2017 in a city in Northern Syria, a stone’s throw away from Turkey and amidst a deadly war, Wood set forth on a 5,000-mile trek through the most contested region on the planet. Wood moved through the Middle East for six months, from ISIS-occupied Iraq through Kuwait and along the jagged coastlines of the Emirates and Oman; across Yemen—in the midst of civil war—and on to Saudia Arabia, Jordan, and Israel, before ending on the shores of the Mediterranean in Lebanon. Like his predecessors, Wood travelled through some of the harshest and most beautiful environments on earth, seeking to challenge our perceptions of this part of the world. Through the people he meets—and the personal histories and local mythologies they share—Wood examines how the region has changed over thousands of years and what it means to its people today.

Book excerpt: ‘A wonderful, rushing, crowded, enlightening voyage . . . A book which, in its ingenious understanding, its acceptance of a very imperfect world, and its energetic and constant fascination with human variety, should do a great deal to dispel the easiest and therefore the most prolific paranoid deception which the Western imagination has now fabricated in its desperate attempt to avoid facing reality’ Angus Wilson, Observer ‘A gem of a book, full of events and people and philosophy’ Sunday Telegraph ‘With an eye for the striking scene and entertaining incident he combines a perceptiveness of deeper realities that makes Arabia more than an amusing travellers’ journal’ Daily Telegraph ‘A very enjoyable book . . . It is racy and entertaining travel writing’ Cosmopolitan ‘The advent of a new travel writer of the first rank is an occasion to celebrate. Such a discovery is Jonathan Raban, whose Arabia is a tour de force’ Yorkshire Post

Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1866 edition. Excerpt: ... REMARKS ON THJ5 ROUTE ACROSS ARABIA, FROM EL-KATIF IN THE PERSIAN GULF TO YAMRO IN THE RED SEA. With a view to elucidate the general direction of my route, to mark the probable relative positions of the intervening towns or places which I passed in this journey, and to render the narrative of His Excellency Ibrahim Pacha's exploits more clear, I have affixed a route across Arabia from Katif to Yambo. During the first stages I was obliged to guess at the distances, not being as yet sufficiently acquainted with the pace and gait of the camel to form an idea of the rate at which we were moving; a few days' observation and timing the animal's pace enabled me to form a tolerably correct opinion, and thence deduce a rate for my general guidance, by calculating from the number of hours we were actually on the march. For marches not exceeding eight hours I calculated three miles an hour, and for inarches exceeding that number of hours I lessened the computed distance to two and half and to two and three-quarter miles per hour, making a deduction in some cases for hilly and rocky ground. The general direction of the line of march I took frequently with a very good compass, always alighting from my camel, its motion being too rough to admit of a compass being used even when in a walk. Prom Katif we proceeded by broken stages to Oomerrubeeah in the desert, and thence by a retrograde and circuitous route to Ul Ahsa, * from whence we returned very unexpectedly to Oomerrubeeah by a different route. Ou laying down the track thus far there does not appear to be any considerable error, as the distances and bearings which I had taken brought me within seven or eight miles of my first calculation. From this point we again set out with the intention of...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music in Arabia extends and challenges existing narratives of the region's distinctive but understudied music to reveal diverse and dynamic music cultures rooted in centuries-old heritage. Contributors to Music in Arabia bring a critical eye and ear to the contemporary soundscape, musical life, and expressive culture in the Gulf region. Including work by leading scholars and local authorities, this collection presents fresh perspectives and new research addressing why musical expression is fundamental to the area's diverse, transnational communities. The volume also examines music circulation as a commodity, such as with the production of early recordings, the transnational music industry, the context of the Arab Spring, and the region's popular music markets. As a bonus, readers can access a linked website containing audiovisual examples of the music, dance, and expressive culture introduced throughout the book. With the work of resident scholars and heritage practitioners in conversation with that of researchers from the United States and Europe, Music in Arabia offers both context and content to clarify how music articulates identity and nation among multiethnic, multiracial, and multinational populations.

Book excerpt: Robert Lebling and Donna Pepperdine have completed a rigorous study of the health remedies traditionally recognized across Arabia--an ambitious project executed with conscientious attention to detail. The result is an impressive body of research, combining a thorough text with good pictorial coverage --a unique approach to a subject that will be of widespread interest. This timely volume comes just as the age-old regional knowledge of the remedies naturally available--encapsulated in an oral tradition carrying hundreds of years of empirical knowledge--is being allowed to drift from contemporary consciousness, replaced by a new blind faith in the remedies widely promoted by the major pharmaceutical companies.
