There has been a considerable increase in research and development activity in this field worldwide and some significant advances in the realization of working in tegrated optic devices and modules have been made in recent years. In fact, there have already been some commercial manufacturing and technical ap plications of such devices and modules. The guided-wave-acoustooptics involving Bragg interactions between guided optical waves and surface acoustic waves is one of the areas of in tegrated-optics that has reached some degree of scientific and technological maturity. This topical volume is devoted to an in-depth treatment of this emerging branch of science and technology. Presented in this volume are concise treatments on bulk-wave acoustooptics, guided-wave optics, and surface acoustic waves, and detailed studies of guided-wave acoustooptic Bragg diffraction in three promising material substrates, namely, LiNb0 , 3 ZnO/Si0 , and GaAs, the resulting wide band modulators and deflectors, 2 and applications. The chapters cover not only the basic principles and the oretical analysis, but also the design, fabrication, and measurement of the resulting devices and modules, and their applications.

Book excerpt: Photonic devices lie at the heart of the communications revolution, and have become a large and important part of the electronic engineering field, so much so that many colleges now treat this as a subject in its own right. With this in mind, the author has put together a unique textbook covering every major photonic device, and striking a careful balance between theoretical and practical concepts. The book assumes a basic knowledge of optics, semiconductors and electromagnetic waves. Many of the key background concepts are reviewed in the first chapter. Devices covered include optical fibers, couplers, electro-optic devices, magneto-optic devices, lasers and photodetectors. Problems are included at the end of each chapter and a solutions set is available. The book is ideal for senior undergraduate and graduate courses, but being device driven it is also an excellent engineers' reference.

Book excerpt: New devices are described which are based on optical waveguides on lithium niobate crystals, using the material anisotropy, including couplers, electro-optic modulator and light multiplexer, and optical deflector and scanner using collinear acousto-optic interaction between surface acoustic waves and optical surface waves. Complete theory for the propagating modes and coupled modes is presented. A new type of waveguide is presented for use with surface acoustic wave devices for real-time direct scanning and Fourier transform scanning of optical images, which introduces no additional transmission loss over that for unguided propagation. Test pattern results demonstrate the ability of this type of waveguiding to increase the transverse resolution of such scanners, and good correlation between theoretical and experimental results is shown.

Book excerpt: In this research program, Guided-wave TeO2 Acousto-Optic Devices, the properties of surface acoustic waves on tellurium dioxide single crystal surfaces has been studied for its potential applications as acousto-optic signal processing devices. Personal computer based numerical method has been utilized for searching of useful surface acoustic waves and for theoretical investigation of the properties of surface acoustic waves on tellurium dioxide crystal substrate. Particular emphasis is on the finding and exploration of slow surface acoustic waves for long delay time signal processing applications. The investigation also includes study of surface acoustic wave interaction with laser beams after total internal reflection beneath the surface of the crystal substrate. The usefulness of such interaction for optical signal processing applications is also investigated in comparison to similar devices using the bulk slow shear waves in TeO2. Based on theoretical study results, several TeO2 substrate have ben prepared. Surface acoustic waves have been launched onto these sample substrate using edge coupled shear wave transducers. Experiments has been conducted for surface acoustic wave interaction with laser beams. Use of the acousto-optic probe, the surface acoustic wave velocity and field distribution have been obtained and compared to theoretical data. A 70 micro- second bulk slow shear wave acousto-optic beam deflector has been fabricated for comparison. Advantages of the surface acoustic wave beam deflector over bulk wave deflectors are considered. Potential applications as well as areas for further developments are recommended for a phase II development program.

Book excerpt: The theory of the interaction of coherent light with surface acoustic waves and an experimental demonstration of the application of the interaction to new devices are presented. The analysis, based upon classical electromagnetic theory and a phenomenological formulation of the photoelastic effect, is applied to the piezoelectric material LiNbO3, and provides good agreement with previously published experimental data. Explicit account is taken of the linear electro-optic and linear elasto-optic contributions to the interaction. The experimental demonstration of applications is restricted to the side-entry technique, an interaction configuration providing the longest interaction length between a surface acoustic wave and unguided optical wave. The relative merits of this configuration are discussed. New experimental results for the real-time side-entry convolver employing optical heterodyning include autocorrelation of Barker codes, ambiguity function generation, demonstration of a parallel acoustic track geometry to inhibit reflections, and measurement of diffraction characteristics for polarized light. Results are given for the correlation of a time varying light intensity distribution with an electrical signal, and the application to an optical communication system is indicated. The scanning of one and two dimensional black and white transparencies is performed, and the extension to color image scanning is demonstrated. All experiments are performed using Y-cut Z-propagating LiNbO3. Acoustic frequencies employed range from 45 MHz to 100 MHz. Laser sources are HeNe and Ar. Devices are analyzed and discussed with reference to the diffraction integral of scalar diffraction theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brillouin scattering is the inelastic light-sound interaction. It has given birth to two popular research topics: stimulated Brillouin scattering and acousto-optics. With recent advances in nanotechnology, research on both stimulated Brillouin scattering and acousto-optics has focused on scaling down the traditional bulky material to nanophotonic chips for functional devices. The integrated platforms have not only the advantage of a small footprint but also the flexibility of design and fabrication.On-chip stimulated Brillouin scattering has been demonstrated in varieties of platforms for integrated photonics. The key factor of stimulated Brillouin scattering is the Brillouin gain, which is determined by the intensity of the coherent acoustic waves. Because the acoustic wave frequency is about five orders of magnitude lower than that of light, the energy efficiency of acoustic generation through intense pump light is relatively low. On the contrary, in acousto-optics, acoustic waves are generated piezoelectrically with microwave at the same frequency, which is much efficient. However, previous work in acousto-optics focused on either acoustic modulation of cavities or small deflection of light. The interaction of light and sound with the wavelength in the same scale remains unexplored. My first project focused on exploring new phenomena and inventing novel devices by combining the advantages of stimulated Brillouin scattering and the acousto-optic modulation. With successfully integrating sub-optical wavelength acoustic transducers onto aluminum nitride photonic integrated circuits, we experimentally observed the backscattering of photons with piezoelectrically excited phonons for the first time. We systematically studied the electromechanical Brillouin scattering system. Potential applications as single-sideband modulators and microwave photonic links have also been demonstrated. In the second project, a subwavelength suspended phononic waveguide was realized. The coupling of an acoustic wave was achieved through a parabolic acoustic coupler. Different acoustic couplers with interdigital transducers with different apertures are fabricated for comparison and optimization. Transmission of the Lamb wave at 3.4 GHz was detected even in the presence of high waveguide loss. Furthermore, the phenomenon of mode conversion from membrane acoustic waves to subwavelength guided modes was first visualized through microwave impedance microscopy. This project provides guidance for the future design of co-confining light and sound in subwavelength structures. Besides these two projects, I will also discuss the fundamental of surface acoustic waves and the technical details in surface acoustic wave device design in Chapter 2. Future perspectives for integrated acousto-optic devices are included in the last chapter.
