Book excerpt: We have developed and studied hybrid asymptotic-numerical methods to compute the acoustic field scattered by a large object. The asymptotic approximation is based on a short wavelength expansion of the scattered field in the form of uniformly valid geometrical theory of diffraction. These were combined with two numerical methods: finite elements and boundary spectral strip methods. The coupling to finite elements was achieved with the introduction of a new variational principle to couple two incompatible approximations. The boundary spectral strip method is a spectral approximation applied to a boundary integral formulation of the boundary value problem. With this method, we have successfully evaluated diffraction coefficients, surface wave excitation coefficients, and solved large scattering problems with several diffraction points. We have also studied the error introduced by joining the numerical and asymptotic approximations, and determined its properties and scalings.

Book excerpt: This thesis is concerned with the mathematical and numerical modelling of sound propagation over infinite surfaces in two and three-dimensions. In particular we consider the prediction, in a homogeneous medium, of sound propagation from a source in a cutting out onto flat surrounding ground, and scattering by an infinite rigid obstacle in three dimensions. In Chapter 2 a boundary integral formulation for the two-dimensional Helmholtz equation in a locally-perturbed half-plane with impedance boundary condition is developed to calculate sound propagation out of a cutting onto the surrounding terrain. A main result in this chapter is to show that the integral equation is uniquely solvable. A simple but robust boundary element method is developed and experimental convergence rates and numerical predictions are presented. Chapter 3 is concerned with the asymptotic behaviour of solutions at infinity to multidimensional second kind integral equations. A general second kind integral equation set on an infinite cylindrical surface is analysed in Chapter 4. Under certain conditions it is shown that an approximate solution, obtained by solving an integral equation on a finite cylindrical surface of length 2a, converges to the original solution, as a tends to infinity. Uniform stability and convergence results for a piecewise constant boundary element method for the truncated equations are also obtained. A boundary integral equation, which models three-dimensional acoustic radiation from an infinite rigid cylinder, illustrating the results of Chapters 3 and 4, is examined in Chapter 5.

This is done by coupling recently developed high order local absorbing boundary conditions (ABCs) with finite difference methods for the Helmholtz equation. These ABCs are based on exact representations of the outgoing waves by means of farfield expansions. The finite difference methods, which are constructed from a deferred-correction (DC) technique, approximate the Helmholtz equation and the ABCs to any desired order. As a result, high order numerical methods with an overall order of convergence equal to the order of the DC schemes are obtained. A detailed construction of these DC finite difference schemes is presented. Details and results from an extension to heterogeneous media are also included. Additionally, a rigorous proof of the consistency of the DC schemes with the Helmholtz equation and the ABCs in polar coordinates is also given. The results of several numerical experiments corroborate the high order convergence of the proposed method. A novel local high order ABC for elastic waves based on farfield expansions is constructed and preliminary results applying it to elastic scattering problems are presented.
