Book excerpt: Photoacoustic and Photothermal Spectroscopy: Principles and Applications introduces the basic principles, instrumentation and major developments in the many applications of Photoacoustic and Photothermal Spectroscopy over the last three decades. The book explains the processes of sound generation by periodic optical excitation and ultrasonic generation by pulsed laser excitation and describes the workings of photoacoustic cells equipped with microphones and piezoelectric transducers. Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) is one of the fastest-growing imaging modalities of recent times. It combines the advantages of ultrasound and optical imaging techniques. These non-invasive and non-destructive techniques offer many benefits to users by enabling spectroscopy of opaque and inhomogeneous materials, (solid, liquid, powder, gel, gases) without any sample preparation, and more. - Written in a non-mathematical, simple-to-read manner - Presents recent developments in the field, along with the scope of future progress, including up-to-date references - Includes detailed illustrations, such as equipment layout, spectra, experimental setups, tables, photographs, and more

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optoacoustic Spectroscopy and Detection discusses the fundamental principles and practice of optoacoustic spectroscopy. This book serves as a basis for evaluation of the feasibility of using such techniques in specific instances. Organized into eight chapters, this book starts with an overview of the detection and identification of gas contaminants, which is necessary to understand the physical description of the generation and measurement of the optoacoustic signal. This text then provides an understanding of the optoacoustic effect on a molecular scale and describes the energy transfer processes and estimates of the lifetimes of vibrationally excited states. Other chapters consider the options available to the researcher in the selection of optoacoustic system design. This book discusses as well the capabilities and limitations of various optoacoustic system designs. The final chapter deals with the technique used for exploring the absorption spectra of substances, including powders, gels, adsorbed films, and organic tissues. This book is a valuable resource for researchers and graduate students engaged in the study of optoacoustic spectroscopy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Photo-acoustic effect occurs when a chopped beam of light shining on an absorbing gas produces sound waves. From the amplitude of these waves one can infer the absorption spectrum of a known sample, or detect trace gases in an unknown sample. While the signal strength is inversely proportional to the sample chamber volume, in some cases it is advantageous to design a large cell as an acoustic resonance chamber, and modulate the excitation beam at a natural frequency of the chamber. The resonant amplification factor Q(W) depends upon the system losses. The dominating loss mechanisms are the thermal and viscous boundary layer effects. By rescaling the local coordinates, one can include these losses, neglecting terms smaller than the boundary layer thickness, simply by modifying the boundary conditions for the non-dissipative wave equation. From there one can derive an equation for Q(W) applicable at all sample chamber resonances. This equation will be useful in evaluating the relative advantages of resonant and non-resonant photo-acoustic spectroscopy. An experiment conducted with a Krypton/Argon laser shining on a one atmosphere sample of dry air with .5% NO2 enclosed in a cylinder resulted in amplification factors less than those predicted. An analysis of the data, and the results of later experiments at lower pressures indicated that the unpredicted losses were probably due to imperfect cell construction. (Author).

Book excerpt: Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) is an emerging non-invasive imaging modality that integrates the advantages of deep ultrasound penetration and high optical contrast. It provides better resolution than pure ultrasonic imaging and deeper penetration than pure optical imaging. Hence, it is opening new frontiers in diagnostic imaging. Photoacoustic Imaging - Principles, Advances and Applications, provides interested readers with the principle knowledge, advanced methodologies, and new applications associated with PAI technology. Written by expert researchers, chapters cover such topics as the generation and detection of photoacoustic signals, sound source localization, image reconstruction and formation, and application of PAI in gastroenterology and ophthalmology.
