Book excerpt: This report presents results from a laboratory study and field implementation of acoustic emission monitoring or fatigue cracks in cover-plated steel bridge girders. The acoustic monitoring successfully detected growing fatigue cracks in the lab when using both source location and a state of stress criteria. Application of this methodology on 3 field bridges also proved successful by detecting a propagating crack in 2 of the bridges and an extinguished crack in a third bridge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acoustic Emission (AE) fatigue crack monitoring has the potential to provide early fatigue crack detection and assessment required to develop a rational prognostics methodology and can provide insight to assess the integrity of structures such as bridges. Most steel structures develop fatigue cracks at the transverse weld toe of stiffeners, attachments, and cover plates. The cracks develop from a combination of initial conditions (e.g. weld toe geometry, discontinuities, residual stress fields) that are difficult to accurately quantify, thus rendering fracture mechanics models for the prediction of fatigue crack growth exceedingly difficult without experimental verification. Single edge notches provide a very well defined load and fatigue crack size and shape environment for estimation of the stress intensity factor K, which is not found in welded structures. ASTM SE(T) specimens do not appear to provide ideal boundary conditions for proper recording of acoustic wave propagation and crack growth behavior observed in the field, but do provide standard fatigue crack growth rate data. A modified version of the SE(T) specimen has been examined to provide small scale specimens with improved AE characteristics while still maintaining accuracy of fatigue crack growth rate da/dN versus stress intensity factor [delta]K. The configuration of the modified SE(T) specimen maintains the similitude with the orientation of crack propagation in flanges of steel bridge members. Testing of small scale single edge notch tension specimens is considered to assess load ratio (R ratio) and initial crack size effects on fatigue life of specimens. Fatigue tests are conducted at various R ratios to investigate the effect of load ratio on acoustic emission data. Stress Intensity Factor (SIF) models are extended to include expressions for crack tip opening displacement measured experimentally with a clip gauge. Correlation between fatigue crack growth, stress intensity factor and AE data is developed. Analytical and numerical studies of stress intensity factor are developed for single edge notch test specimens consistent with the experimental program. ABAQUS finite element software is utilized for stress analysis of crack tips. Cruciform specimens consisting of a single tension pull plate with transverse fillet welded plates attached at midspan are tested. The transverse plates represent stiffeners and/or short attachments typical of steel bridge details. The specimen provides realistic initial conditions of fatigue crack initiation and growth from high stress concentration regions. Realistic AE waveform characteristics representative of those expected on bridge structures is produced. Accurate stress intensity factor values are more difficult to obtain due to the small, non-uniform crack growth conditions at the weld toe. Additional Finite Element Models for welded geometries capturing stress fields at the weld toe of stiffeners and attachment details is performed to examine crack depth, limited base plate thickness and weld toe angle effects on the relationship between stress intensity factor K and crack size, a. Numerical results are incorporated into an existing analytical stress intensity factor framework to minimize required computational costs. As a result, the validity of Acoustic Emission (AE) as a parameter to assess, monitor and predict the structural health of infrastructure was verified. A methodology to combine AE data and loading data with fracture models was developed to identify and evaluate existing condition (size and shape) and predict future behavior of fatigue cracks on a structure subject to well defined detail types. This will provide the ability to do prognostic using AE and will allow the prediction for the remaining life of the member based on the AE data.

Book excerpt: This interim report describes the current status of acoustic emission (AE) monitoring of steel bridge members. The report includes a brief introduction to the theory of acoustic emission and a comprehensive summary of previous efforts to apply AE monitoring to steel bridges, and discusses issues related to AE noise discrimination. Five bridges were field tested. Extensive data from the active cracking of a hanger on the Rte. 29 bridge over the Robinson River at Madison, Virginia, are discussed. The report includes conclusions and recommendations based on extensive field monitoring. Two appendices detail the laboratory fatigue testing of bridge steels and the simulated environmental exposure of AE transducer-mounting adhesives. AE monitoring is sensitive to the acoustic energy emitted by steel bridge members during the formation and growth of cracks. It is the only method that can distinguish between active and benign cracks. It is also possible to discriminate between AE caused by crack growth and irrelevant noise. AE information can be significant in making repair or replacement decisions, and AE could be used for the continuous remote monitoring of critical bridge members or even entire bridges.

Book excerpt: Prefabricated and pre-stressed reinforced concrete beams and girders are integral components of many highway structures, including those built by rapid construction techniques. Concerns exist regarding the development of cracks during curing, form removal, detensioning, transport, installation, and operation. Non-destructive, Acoustic Emission (AE) sensing techniques have the potential for detecting and locating cracking in prefabricated, pre-stressed concrete girders used as Prefabricated Bridge Elements and Systems (PBES) used in rapid construction practices as part of a Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) program. AE sensing records transient elastic waves produced by the release of stored elastic energy resulting in plastic deformations (i.e., crack nucleation and growth) with an array of point sensors. The AE instrument system is relatively portable which can allow for it to be an option for both off-site fabrication QA/QC as well as on-site field QA/QC. This thesis presents a multi-stage research initiative on acoustic emission monitoring of prefabricated and pre-stressed reinforced concrete beams used in highway bridge construction during detensioning, craned removal from formwork and transport to bridge sites, along with supporting laboratory tests and numerical analysis. The specific objectives of this research were to: 1. Identify suitable instruments to monitor pre-stressed and/or post-tensioned concrete girders for cracking activity; 2. Design and develop a reusable instrumentation package; 3. Measure performance and condition of concrete girders during fabrication and transport; and 4. Identify test protocols and possible accept/fix/reject criteria for structural elements based on information from monitoring system. Presented are results from laboratory, full-scale girder fabrication, and transport monitoring, along with overall conclusions and recommendations for future research.

Book excerpt: With bridge infrastructure in Minnesota aging, advancing techniques for ensuring bridge safety is a fundamental goal of the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT). Developing health monitoring systems for fracture-critical bridges is an essential objective in meeting the stated goal. This report documents the implementation of two, 16-sensor, acoustic emission monitoring systems in one of the tie girders of the Cedar Avenue Bridge, which is a fracture-critical tied arch bridge spanning the Minnesota River between Bloomington and Eagan, MN. The goal of the project is to develop a process for using acoustic emission technology to monitor one of the girders of the bridge while continuously collecting data from the monitoring systems. Given the cost of acoustic emission sensing equipment, an approach was adopted to space the sensors as widely as possible. Fracture tests were conducted on a specimen acoustically connected to the bridge to simulate fracture in a bridge member. Sets of criteria were developed to differentiate between acoustic emission data collected during fracture and ambient bridge (i.e. AE noise) data. The sets of criteria were applied to fracture test data and AE noise data to determine the validity of the criteria. For each criteria set, a period of Cedar Avenue Bridge monitoring data was analyzed. The results of the analysis of each period showed that the criteria could differentiate between the bridge AE noise data and the fracture test data. The AE noise data never met all of the criteria in the set, whereas all criteria were met during each of the applicable fracture tests.
