Depreciation is an expense allowance made for the wear and tear on an asset over its estimated useful life (NYSSCPA, 2003). Depreciation allows businesses to take a deduction and reduce their gross income. However they cannot "reduce one year's gross income by an expense deduction for the total cost of an item that will be used for several years." Therefore they must figure the allowable depreciation for the asset and choose the appropriate method (IRS, 2003). There are several different methods used to calculate depreciation. The methods, which have been examined, are straight-line, double declining balance, sum-of-years digits, and unit of production, accelerated cost recovery and modified accelerated cost recovery system. There are guidelines and regulations set by the Internal Revenue Service on how to depreciate property for small businesses and corporations. A comprehensive example from the IRS has been included in the thesis, which explains the calculation of depreciation and makes reference to the Federal Tax form for depreciation. In the conclusion, the Jobs and Growth Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2003 is discussed. This is the most recent change in law pertaining to bonus depreciation, which was signed into law by President Bush in May 2003.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Depreciation is the process of allocating the cost of a tangible asset over its useful life. It represents the reduction in the value of an asset due to wear and tear, obsolescence, or the passage of time. Depreciation is an essential concept in accounting because it helps match the cost of using an asset with the revenue it generates over its useful life. Here are the key points about depreciation: Purpose: Depreciation is recorded to reflect the decrease in the value of tangible assets over time. It allows businesses to allocate the cost of an asset over its useful life rather than expensing the entire cost in the year of purchase. Methods: There are several methods of depreciation, including straight-line depreciation, declining balance depreciation, and units of production depreciation. Each method allocates the cost of the asset differently over its useful life. Recording: Depreciation expense is recorded on the income statement as an operating expense. It reduces the net income and reflects the consumption of the asset's value over time. Simultaneously, accumulated depreciation is recorded on the balance sheet as a contra-asset account. It represents the total depreciation expense recognized for the asset since its acquisition. Useful Life and Salvage Value: Depreciation calculations consider the estimated useful life of the asset and its salvage value (the estimated value of the asset at the end of its useful life). The difference between the asset's cost and its salvage value is spread over its useful life to determine the annual depreciation expense. Impacts: Depreciation affects both the income statement and the balance sheet. It reduces the net income and, consequently, the taxes payable. Additionally, it reduces the carrying value of the asset on the balance sheet, reflecting its decreased value over time. Overall, depreciation is a critical accounting concept used to accurately reflect the consumption of an asset's value over its useful life and to ensure the financial statements provide a true and fair view of a company's financial position and performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Old depreciation systems do not die--or even fade away very fast. Businesses and the practitioners that serve them must operate with three coexisting depreciation systems--Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System (MACRS), the Accelerated Cost Recovery System (ACRS) and the Treasury Department's Asset Depreciation System (ADR). CCH's U.S. Master Depreciation Guide offers tax and accounting professionals who work with businesses a one-stop resource for guidance in understanding and applying the complex depreciation rules to their fixed assets. This area is especially challenging, because bits and pieces of applicable information must be gathered from a maze of Revenue Procedures, IRS Tables and IRS Regulations. These sources are frequently old and include some materials which may be non-applicable. CCH's U.S. Master Depreciation Guide pulls the pieces together, so practitioners can make sense of all the corresponding information and put the information into practice. The U.S. Master Depreciation Guide includes several useful "quick reference tables." These include a list of trucks, SUVs, and vans that are exempt from the luxury car caps because they weigh more than 6,000 pounds, trucks with a bed-length under six feet which are subject to a $25,000 section 179 depreciation cap, a list of states that conform to the federal bonus depreciation and section 179 expensing rules, and a comprehensive table of assets and corresponding recovery periods with cross references to the location of the related U.S. Master Depreciation Guide explanation. Published annually, this new edition is completely updated to reflect all depreciation rule changes through press time in December. A special Highlights section provides a quick overview of any new legislation, cases, rulings, and regulations occurring since last year's edition, with
