These developments require us to constantly search for new approaches to increase the productivity and quality of our software - velopment and to decrease the cost of software maintenance. Generative and component-based technologies hold considerablepromise with respect to achi- ing these goals. GCSE 2001 constituted another important step forward and provided a platform for academic and industrial researchers to exchange ideas. These proceedings represent the third conference on generative and com- nent-based software engineering. The conference originated as a special track on generative programming from the Smalltalk and Java in Industry and - ucation Conference (STJA), organized by the working group “Generative and Component-Based Software Engineering” of the “Gesellschaft fur ̈ Informatik” FG 2.1.9 “Object-Oriented Software Engineering.” However, the conference has evolved substantially since then, with its own, independent stature, invited speakers, and, most importantly, a stable and growing community. This year’s conference attracted 43 submissions from all over the world, - dicating the broad, international interest in the research ?eld. Based on careful review by the program committee, 14 papers were selected for presentation. I would like to thank the members of the program committee, all renowned - perts, for their dedication in preparing thorough reviews of the submissions.

Book excerpt: The rapid development in the area of sensor technology has been responsible for a number of societal phenomena like UGC (User Generated Content) or QS (Quantified Self). Machine learning algorithms benefit a lot from the availability of such huge volumes of digital data. For example, new technical solutions for challenges caused by the demographic change (ageing society) can be proposed in this way, especially in the context of healthcare systems in industrialised countries. The goal of this book is to present selected algorithms for Visual Scene Analysis (VSA, processing UGC) as well as for Human Data Interpretation (HDI, using data produced within the QS movement) and to expose a joint methodological basis between these two scientific directions. While VSA approaches have reached impressive robustness towards human-like interpretation of visual sensor data, HDI methods are still of limited semantic abstraction power. Using selected state-of-the-art examples, this book shows the maturity of approaches towards closing the semantic gap in both areas, VSA and HDI.

Licklider estimated that he spent 85% of his "thinking time" in activities that were clerical and mechanical and might (someday) be delegated to the computer. Such systems have traditionally been used for advertising and information dissemination, with digital signage commonplace in shopping malls, airports and public spaces. While advertising and broadcasting announcements remain important applications, developments in sensing and interaction technologies are enabling entirely new classes of display applications that tailor content to the situation and audience of the display. As a result, signage systems are beginning to transition from simple broadcast systems to rich platforms for communication and interaction. In this lecture, we provide an introduction to this emerging field for researchers and practitioners interested in creating state-of-the-art pervasive display systems. We begin by describing the history of pervasive display research, providing illustrations of key systems, from pioneering work on supporting collaboration to contemporary systems designed for personalized information delivery. We then consider what the near future might hold for display networks -- describing a series of compelling applications that are being postulated for future display networks. Creating such systems raises a wide range of challenges and requires designers to make a series of important trade-offs. We dedicate four chapters to key aspects of pervasive display design: audience engagement, display interaction, system software, and system evaluation. These chapters provide an overview of current thinking in each area. Finally, we present a series of case studies of display systems and our concluding remarks.
