Book excerpt: Accurate velocity of an ocean going vessel with respect to the water can be determined in real time by utilizing a Doppler Current Profiler (DCP) system. The DCP employs multiple sonar beams with a plurality of bins or returns from various depth segments. These returns are then statistically processed to attain stable and accurate velocity information. The process is performed without any temporal averaging allowing it to be employed where raw data requirements must be met such as the damping of inertial navigation systems.

Book excerpt: The use of acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs) from a moving boat is now a commonly used method for measuring streamflow. The technology and methods for making ADCP-based discharge measurements are different from the technology and methods used to make traditional discharge measurements with mechanical meters. Although the ADCP is a valuable tool for measuring streamflow, it is only accurate when used with appropriate techniques. This report presents guidance on the use of ADCPs for measuring streamflow; this guidance is based on the experience of U.S. Geological Survey employees and published reports, papers, and memorandums of the U.S. Geological Survey. The guidance is presented in a logical progression, from predeployment planning, to field-data collection, and finally to post-processing of the collected data. Acoustic Doppler technology and the instruments currently (2008) available also are discussed to highlight the advantages and limitations of the technology. More in-depth, technical explanations of how an ADCP measures streamflow and what to do when measuring in moving-bed conditions are presented in the appendixes. ADCP users need to know the proper procedures for measuring discharge from a moving boat and why those procedures are required, so that when the user encounters unusual field conditions, the procedures can be adapted without sacrificing the accuracy of the streamflow-measurement data.

Book excerpt: The degree to which Acoustic-Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) and expendable bathythermograph (XBT) data can provide quantitative measurements of the velocity structure and transport of the Gulf Stream is addressed. An algorithm is used to generate salinity from temperature and depth using an historical Temperature/Salinity relation for the NW Atlantic. Results have been simulated using CTD data and comparing real and pseudo salinity files. Errors are typically less than 2 dynamic cm for the upper 800 m out of a total signal of 80 cm (across the Gulf Stream). When combined with ADCP data for a near-surface reference velocity, transport errors in isopycnal layers are less than about 1 Sv (10 to the 6th power cu m/s), as is the difference in total transport for the upper 800 m between real and pseudo data. The method is capable of measuring the real variability of the Gulf Stream, and when combined with altimeter data, can provide estimates of the geoid slope with oceanic errors of a few parts in 10 to the 8th power over horizontal scales of 500 km. Book excerpt: The Resistance and Powering Division (Code 5200) of The Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (NSWCCD) conducted verification experiments on a 20 degree Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) unit produced by RD Instruments (RDI) of San Diego, California. These experiments were conducted in the Navy's Large Cavitation Channel (LCC) located in Memphis, Tennessee. Although they have many other possible future uses, currently the ADCP units tested during this series are used to profile flow and determine speed through the water on ships during at-sea trials. The purpose of this Report is to present the accuracy of the ADCP units in determining speed through the water. Data collected with the ADCP units are compared to data collected by the LCC's Laser Doppler Anemometer (LDA) system, which provides highly accurate water velocity data. The experimental results indicate excellent agreement between the ADCP and LDA. Based on the experimental results, it is recommended that the ADCP is operated using water mode 12 and an ambiguity velocity of 700 cm/s during future sea trials. The experimental results indicate the ADCP agrees with LDA within +/-0.2 knots on average when these settings are used.

Book excerpt: Although numerous books have been written on both monitoring and modelling of coastal oceans, there is a practical need for an introductory multi-disciplinary volume to non-specialists in this field. The articles commisioned for this book, organized into four major themes, are written by experts in their disciplines while the text is intended for scientists who do not have extensive training in marine sciences and coastal zone management. As such, the articles in this monograph can be a valuable reference for practicing professionals. The first section introduces the complex physical processes with main emphasis on waste disposal in the coastal ocean. Following this, examples of instrumentation techniques that are commonly used for measuring different properties of oceans are discribed. Coastal and estuarine transport and dispersion modelling is introduced in the next section with examples from different parts of the world. The last section provides an overview of coastal disasters such as tropical cyclones, storm surges and oil spills.

Book excerpt: Measuring Ocean Currents: Tools, Technologies, and Data covers all major aspects of ocean current measurements in view of the implications of ocean currents on changing climate, increasing pollution levels, and offshore engineering activities. Although more than 70% of the Earth is covered by ocean, there is limited information on the countless fine- to large-scale water motions taking place within them. This book fills that information gap as the first work that summarizes the state-of-the-art methods and instruments used for surface, subsurface, and abyssal ocean current measurements. Readers of this book will find a wealth of information on Lagrangian measurements, horizontal mapping, imaging, Eulerian measurements, and vertical profiling techniques. In addition, the book describes modern technologies for remote measurement of ocean currents and their signatures, including HF Doppler radar systems, satellite-borne sensors, ocean acoustic tomography, and more. Crucial aspects of ocean currents are described in detail as well, including dispersion of effluents discharged into the sea and transport of beneficial materials—as well as environmentally hazardous materials—from one region to another. The book highlights several important practical applications, showing how measurements relate to climate change and pollution levels, how they affect coastal and offshore engineering activities, and how they can aid in tsunami detection. Coverage of measurement, mapping and profiling techniques Descriptions of technologies for remote measurement of ocean currents and their signatures Reviews crucial aspects of ocean currents, including special emphasis on the planet-spanning thermohaline circulation, known as the ocean's "conveyor belt," and its crucial role in climate change

Book excerpt: The Republic of Korea's industrial policy has directed that nation's economy through nearly three decades of spectacular growth. But the authors of this paper maintain that this policy is showing signs of being outmoded. The time has come, the authors argue, for the Korean government to stop managing the economy's structural development and to redefine the responsibilities of business and government. Under this proposed compact, the allocation of resources would shift from the government to the private industrial and financial sectors. The transformation of the government bureaucracy from an ad hoc policy role to one of a transparent and predictable regulator is a key to the success of this undertaking. These new directions would present the government with enormous challenges. Greater competitive discipline and regulatory oversight would be required. While dealing with the complexities of the transition, the government would have to maintain macroeconomic stability and the momentum of savings and investment. For comparison, the study examines the industrial economies of France, Germany, Japan, and the United States, which underwent similar shifts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Observations of current velocity in near-surface and near-bottom boundary layers are critically important for many scientific, operational, and engineering applications. NOAA's National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) presently maintains approximately 110 weather and oceanographic buoys. Of these, some are tasked to measure full current profiles, including near-surface currents, in an operational real-time system. Nortek developed a dual-frequency, six-beam acoustic Doppler current profiler to meet the needs of observing the complete water column velocity profile, including the nearsurface or near-bottom currents (depending on the mounting orientation). Three acoustic beams point upward or downward in the traditional current profiler mode. The other three acoustic beams are directed horizontally and spaced equally around the circumference of the profiler with 120 deg spacing between the beams. These beams measure the two-component horizontal currents at the level of the instrument. This geometry allows the observation of current velocity near the surface for buoymounted profilers and near the bottom for bottom-mounted profilers. Near-surface and water column current velocity profile observations from a 6-beam Nortek profiler mounted on an NDBC 3 m discus buoy are compared with current velocity profile measurements from a bottom mounted 1 MHz Nortek AWAC acoustic Doppler wave and current profiler located within 100 m of the buoy location.
