Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which acculturative stress is associated with physical activity levels of international students, the influence of types and sources of social support on their physical activity levels, and the degree to which social support affects the relationship between their physical activity levels and acculturative stress. 215 Korean international students from Bryan-College Station, Texas, were recruited for this study. The results revealed that only the stressor of English language difficulty, one of acculturative stress, negatively influenced physical activity levels. Social support was positively associated with physical activity levels. Finally, in the role of social support between acculturative stress and physical activity levels, the support of Korean friends and American friends positively affected vigorous physical activity level. These results suggest that social support for international students is likely to be one of most important factors for their physical activity levels. Since the convenient sample of Korean international students may not be representative of international students in the United States, further study needs representative samples in order to establish the generality of international students studying in the United States. Moreover, future research is necessary to examine various sources and types of social support which influence physical activity of international students.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the factors influencing acculturative stress among international students from the international student perspective. This study explored how acculturative stressors, social support and stress are related. In addition the study examined the significant socio-cultural and demographic predictors of acculturative stress. The Berry's acculturation stress research framework and Bronfenbrenner's ecological perspective were used to guide this study. Data was collected using an online survey from international students across a cohort of eleven U.S universities. Of the 986 students who took the survey, only complete data from 606 students were included in the current study. Descriptive statistics, univariate and multivariate statistical analyses were employed to summarize and test the proposed hypotheses. The findings indicated that students who were experiencing increased levels of difficulty with the acculturative stressors were more likely to experience higher levels of stress. In addition international students who reported high levels of collective social support were more likely to display less impact of acculturative stressors on acculturative stress. However, the unique moderating influences of various types of social support (family, friends and important others) on the relationship between acculturative stressor and stress was not supported. The findings on the socio-cultural and demographic predictors of acculturative stress suggested that using the assimilation mode and identifying marital status in the "others" category was indicative of lower stress. Lower income and self identified lower social class prior and during acculturation were predictive of higher acculturative stress levels. Findings highlight the fundamental role of the international student's social context and its impact on his/her acculturation process and outcomes. The findings have implications for professionals and scholars who work with international students in practice, education and policy. Suggestions for future research are also included.

In addition, this study also aimed to investigate whether a specific source of social support (i.e., family and old friends, new friends in the U.S., universities and colleges) and a specific type of coping (i.e., task-oriented coping, emotion-oriented coping, avoidance-oriented coping) mediate the effects of acculturation on acculturative stress. The final sample included 210 East Asian international students with F-1 visas enrolled at American institutions of higher education. To explore its research questions, the study conducted hierarchical multiple regression analyses. The results showed partial mediation effects of social support and coping on the relationship between acculturation and acculturative stress of East Asian international students. Moreover, the results revealed that social support from new friends in the U.S. and universities and colleges partially mediate the levels of acculturation on acculturative stress. However, this study found no mediation effect of social support from family and old friends back in the students' home countries. Additionally, there were partial mediation effects of task-oriented coping and avoidance-oriented coping on the relationship between acculturation and acculturative stress. Emotion-oriented coping, however, did not mediate the effects of acculturation on acculturative stress. At the close of this paper, I will also discuss the study's implications, limitations, and strengths, and then will offer recommendations for future research.

Book excerpt: As the number of international college students has increased dramatically since the 2000s (U.S. Mission Nigeria, 2018), depressive symptoms among this group have become a crucial issue in the United States. Notably, it is widely accepted that international college students are more vulnerable to depressive symptoms than their domestic peers (Krämer and others, 2004; Mori, 2000; Yeh and Inose, 2003). A number of researchers suggest that acculturative stress is one of the most influential factors of this phenomenon (Constantine, Okazaki, and Utsey, 2004; Hamamura and Laird, 2014; Rice and others, 2012; Wei and others, 2007; Wilton and Constantine, 2003; Ying and Han, 2006; Zhang, 2012; Zhang and Goodson, 2011). Acculturative stress is a unique stress caused by the adaptation process of immigrants, such as homesickness or perceived discrimination (Berry, 1997). Acculturative stress buffers the adaptation of international students, leading to a variety of concerns and causes mental problems such as interpersonal problems (Nicholson, 1997), perceived discrimination (Aroian and others, 1998), and feelings of marginalization and depressive symptoms (Hwang and Ting, 2008). Previous researchers have examined international students' financial (Kono and others, 2015; Meghani and Harvey, 2016), sociocultural (Cruwys and others, 2013), and linguistic barriers (Belizaire and Fuertes, 2011; Mori, 2000; Yeh and Inose, 2003) that can cause acculturative stress, resulting in a higher level of depressive symptoms. Physical activity has been regarded to be one of the best options as a means to reduce stress derived from such challenges (Carek, Laibstain, and Carek, 2011; Dunn, Trivedi, and Kampert, 2005; Dunn, Trivedi, and O'Neal, 2001; Lawlor and Hopker, 2001; Sale, Guppy, and El-Sayed, 2000). Despite the distinctive social nature of sport to promote the adaptation of immigrants in the new society (Lee and Funk, 2010; Lee and others, 2019; Stodolska and Alexandris, 2004), many scholars defined and measured sport participation in the same manner as unorganized exercise or leisure. Considering not only the physical (Herring, 2010; Lee and others, 2012) and psychological (Carek, Laibstain, and Carek, 2011; Dunn, Trivedi, and Kampert, 2005; Dunn, Trivedi, and O'Neal, 2001) benefits but also the unique social nature (Krouwel and others, 2006; Miller and Hoffman, 2009) of sport participation, I examined sport participation as a means to alleviate acculturative stress and depressive symptoms among international college students based on the theoretical framework of the Integrative Model of Acculturation and Salutogenesis. To achieve the research purpose, I investigated a total of 203 international college students in the United States. Participants completed a questionnaire distributed via the crowdsourcing platform - Prolific. The following steps were included in the data analysis: (1) assessing the correlation between sport participation, acculturative stress, and depressive symptoms; and (2) measuring the indirect effect of sport participation on depressive symptoms through acculturative stress by conducting a regression analysis using PROCESS macro (Model 4) developed by Preacher and Hayes (2008). The results provided evidence that sport participation was significantly and negatively associated with depressive symptoms. Also, acculturative stress was significantly and positively associated with depressive symptoms. On the other hand, sport participation was not significantly associated with acculturative stress. Finally, acculturative stress did not mediate the relationship between sport participation and depressive symptoms. This study is significant both at the university and society levels. At the university level, findings from this research should provide practical implications to further strategic plans to address one of the fastest-growing phenomena in the United States. Specifically, based on the findings of the current study, universities may be able to create an agenda regarding the promotion and implementation of appropriate sport delivery systems which can enhance their international students' mental wellbeing. At a society level, the findings of this research could be extended to positively impact the general immigrant population in the United States, which represents 28% of the total U.S. population. Considering an international student is one type of immigrant, the current study will be a stepping stone to promote public health by encouraging a healthy lifestyle among diverse members of society through sport involvement.

International students in the United States have nearly doubled in number over the last decade and now account for more than five percent of all college students. Upon moving to the US, many students adopt unhealthy dietary and physical activity behaviors, perhaps related to a lack of familiarity and social support. This cross-sectional study assessed the impact of social support on international college students' dietary and physical activity behaviors. Methods. International students (n = 318) enrolled in one of five public universities in a Midwest state completed a comprehensive survey assessing self-reported eating habits, physical activity behaviors, and perceived social support, using the Social Support for Eating Habits and Exercise scales, the Starting the Conversation (STC) scale, and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Comparisons were made to explore the impact of perceived social support on international students' dietary and physical activity behaviors. Results. Region of origin and family's social support for discouraging healthy eating habits both significant predictors of poor eating habits. For every one unit increase of family social support that discouraged healthy eating habits (ranging from 5 to 25), there was a 0.14 unit increase in the STC scale (ranging from 8 to 24, wherein higher numbers represent less healthy diets). Additionally, region of origin, academic level, and friends' social support for exercise were each significant predictors of physical activity behaviors. Friends' support for exercise was positively associated with higher total physical activity Metabolic Equivalents of Task (MET) counts; for every one unit increase of friends' social support for exercise (i.e., ranging from 5 to 50), there was an 81.1 METs-minutes/week increase in total physical activity MET count. Friends' social support for exercise was a significant predictor of participants' physical activity levels (i.e., inactive, minimally active, and health enhancing physical activity "HEPA"), with increasing support associated with higher likelihood of HEPA compared to inactivity. Discussion. Transitioning to the United States may have negative impacts on international students' dietary and physical activity behaviors. We found that international students' unhealthy eating habits increased when their families discouraged healthy eating habits. Additionally, we found that increased levels of friends' social support for exercise was associated with increased physical activity MET counts and physical activity levels. As university administrators and wellness programs continue to explore interventions promoting positive health behaviors among international students, they should consider including elements that focus specifically on friendship social support as a motivating factor for increasing physical activity behaviors as well as including family members to increase social support for healthy eating habits.

This study examined the relationship between acculturation orientation, or how these cultural changes are addressed, sources of social support, and the level of acculturative stress these students experience. Data was collected using an on-line survey from international students at six public universities in Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, and Iowa. Statistical analysis was conducted on the data collected from the 648 students who participated in the study. Descriptive statistics, group comparisons, and a regression model were employed to summarize and test the study's hypotheses. Correlational analysis indicated that lower levels of acculturative stress were associated with both positive cultural identification with both the home and host culture, as well as the presence of a wide network of social support, while increased levels of acculturative stress were found to be related primarily to higher levels of perceived discrimination and higher levels of mood and anxiety disturbances. Analysis of group differences found that students with positive home and host cultural identifications, as well as students with broad-based social support, experienced statistically significant lower levels of acculturative stress than other groups. A prediction model was developed, although only perceived level of English language ability, perceived discrimination, levels of mood and anxiety disturbance, positive host culture identification, and host country social support were found to be statistically significant predictors. The study findings highlight the importance of both positive cultural identification with both the home and host culture, as well as the positive association with higher levels of social support on mitigating the level of acculturative stress international students experience. The findings have implications for mental health professionals counseling international students in the United States to better understand and thereby develop more effective therapeutic interventions in their work with international students. Suggestions for future research are also indicated.

Numerous studies have explored the effects of general stress on mental and physical health, but less is known about the cumulative effect of acculturative stress on the body's physiologic processes, referred to as allostatic load. Previous studies have indicated that factors such as cumulative exposure to chronic stress, age of arrival, and time living in the United States all contribute to higher levels of allostatic load in new immigrants. There is strong evidence of the stress-buffering effects of social support specifically regarding acculturative stress. However, to date little is known about the effects of social support on acculturative stress and allostatic load. Methods: A sample of 73 first- and second-generation immigrant undergraduate college students were recruited from Saint Peter's University, an ethnically diverse college in Jersey City. Independent variables were measures of acculturative stress, level of acculturation, perceived social support, and perceived general stress. Blood biomarkers were collected and analyzed to calculate a composite score index as a measure of allostatic load as the dependent variable. Results: Acculturation stress was lower among individuals who indicated their level of acculturation as being either assimilation or integration. Although the results of the regression with acculturative stress as the predictor of total allostatic load was not significant, acculturative stress significantly predicted systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Friends' social support and acculturative stress did significantly predict allostatic load, with higher levels of social support decreasing allostatic load. Conclusions: There is increasing evidence that immigrant students who are marginalized may experience higher levels of acculturative stress compared to those who are more integrated. The results of this study add to previous findings that higher social support is associated with lower allostatic load. Future research using longitudinal designs is necessary to examine health behaviors relating to immigration and their influence on allostatic load.

This dissertation was an exploratory study that utilized an ex-post facto framework and purposive sampling to gain participants. T-tests, Pearson correlational coefficient (r), and the analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to obtain the result of this study. The finding from a sample (N=73) provided affirmative support for some of the research questions and indicated that there were statistically significant relationships between acculturative stress and social support, and well-being and length of stay. There were significant differences between some English language proficiency groups that were associated with acculturative stress. However, the rest of the findings of this study did not provide affirmative support for the remaining research questions. Implications for international offices, university counseling centers, and faculty members, as well as limitations and recommendations for future studies, were discussed.

Book excerpt: Chinese international students in American colleges and universities report low levels of physical activity involvement, which may limit them in terms of realizing their full human potential (i.e., cognitively, physically, socially). The purpose of this dissertation was to investigate the psychosocial mechanisms as well as the sociocultural influences to understand physical activity behavior among Chinese international students in American higher education. The first manuscript reviewed the background of physical activity participation among Chinese students. It also reviewed empirical findings related to the Youth Physical Activity Promotion (YPAP) model (Welk, 1999). The second manuscript tested a model of meeting physical activity recommendation (MPAR), using the YPAP model as the guiding framework in an effort to identify theoretical predictors of physical activity participation among Chinese international students. Results revealed that the predisposing, enabling, and reinforcing factors predicted MPAR among Chinese international students. Different from Welk's (1999) model, however, we found that the enabling and reinforcing factors influenced physical activity indirectly through the predisposing factors, able(i.e., Am I able?) and worth (i.e., Is it worth it?), instead of directly. The results clarify how the YPAP model might be used to understand the physical activity behavior of Chinese international students studying in American colleges and universities. The third manuscript qualitatively explored the physical activity experiences of Chinese female international graduate students in terms of meanings, facilitators, and barriers to participation. It revealed that physical activity provided the participants with a break from their academic work, allowed them some alone time, gave them feelings of accomplishment, and taught them a process for accomplishing other things in their lives. Major facilitators included social influences, the availability of ample resources, their changing perceptions of femininity, and the need to improve or maintain their health. The most frequent barriers included a lack of time, self-efficacy, social support, "how to" information, and cultural barriers. This study adds to our understanding of the physical activity experiences of Chinese international graduate students, as well offers some direction to colleges and universities in the U.S. regarding how they might facilitate the physical activity behavior of Chinese international graduate students in the future. Based on the two empirical studies, colleges and universities ought to provide physical activity resources, as well as social resources, to increase the perceived competence, self-efficacy, positive attitude, and enjoyment of physical activity among Chinese international students. University curriculums and fitness training programs should include cross-cultural course content to increase awareness of the unique needs of international students, as well as to help them to remove barriers to their physical activity participation.

Book excerpt: The rise in international student enrollment in the United States and the goal of creating multicultural campuses has prompted the need to further the study of cross-cultural adaptation. This study investigates the influence of social support networks in the adaptation process of international students through a relational regulation perspective (Lakey & Orehek, 2011). International students from two southwestern universities were surveyed. Data was analyzed using regression analysis. In contrast to past literature (Bochner, McLeod, & Lin, 1977; Furnham & Alibhai, 1985), commonly using a stress-buffering approach, perceived balance social support did not predict acculturative stress. Furthermore, there was a correlation between the strength of the conational friend network and acculturative stress for students that have been in the United States the longest. However, these students had a lower overall conational friend network on average. Results of this study suggest the conational network is also important for the final stages of adaptation. Finally, the collectivism/individualism worldview dimension was important when analyzing the preferred social support network of students as collectivism influenced the strength of the conational friend and American friend social support networks. However, individualism did not significantly influence the strength of any social support network. Additionally, collectivism was also related to higher levels of acculturative stress. Overall, this study reinforces Kim and Ruben's (1987) Stress-Adaptation-Growth Model as stress and growth are seen as integrated in the adaptation process. The fact that a balanced social support networks did not indicate a variation in acculturative stress does not mean participants will not adapt to the new environment, as stress is a major component during the acculturation process. This study raises the need to study international student's social support networks through a relational regulation perspective. Using this approach will also serve to analyze the role of each social support network through time.
