Book excerpt: This book contains a collection of research papers on accounting information systems including their strategic role in decision processes, within and between companies. An accounting system is a complex system composed of a mix of strictly interrelated elements such as data, information, human resources, IT tool, accounting models and procedures. Accounting information systems are often considered the instrument by default for accounting automation. This book aims to sketch a clear picture of the current state of AIS research, including design, acceptance and reliance, value-added decision making, interorganizational links, and process improvements. The contributions in this volume emphasize that AIS has grown into a powerful strategic tool. The book provides evidence for this observation by examining a wide range of current issues ranging from theory development in AIS to practical applications of accounting information systems. In particular it focuses on themes of growing interest in the realm of XBRL and Financial Reporting, Management Information Systems, IT/IS Audit and IT/IS Compliance. The book will be of interest to financial and managerial accountants and IT/IS practitioners, including information systems managers and consultants.

Book excerpt: In the 21st century, management accounting gains new dimensions, expanding its research area. Additionally, management of sustainable performance is one of the phenomena faced by the current business environment, and in particular management corporations. The focus of management on profitability remains the main objective of any company, but it must also take into account the sustainability of social, economic, and environmental aspects. Under these circumstances, managerial decisions must be adjusted and strongly substantiated considering the information required by internal and external stakeholders including financial reporting. The information requirements of customers and other stakeholders are steadily increasing, and some companies face certain problems in implementing the concept of sustainability and environmental reporting. Perspectives of Management Accounting for Sustainable Business Practices proposes an interdisciplinary perspective and explores various theoretical and practical approaches to management accounting and its impact in the 21st century on different areas of activity. It contrasts external financial accounting for government regulators and the investment community with internal management accounting for managers to leverage decision making. Covering topics such as corporate social responsibility, disclosure issues, and performance analysis, this premier reference source is an essential resource for business leaders and executives, accountants, financial controllers, business analysts, budgeting managers, students and faculty of higher education, librarians, researchers, and academicians.

Book excerpt: This is the second book of selected papers on environmental management accounting (EMA) which has been developed for Kluwer by the Environmental Management Accounting Network - Europe (EMAN-Eu), drawn primarily from papers presented at EMAN-Eu, to bring together several examples of leading thinking and practice internationally in this rapidly developing area. The authors include academics, practitioners from industry, and government policy-makers, and the subjects covered range from individual company experiences to the role of government in promoting EMA in industry. The papers included in the book provide several examples of how EMA can be applied in practice both in large corporations and in small and medium-sized enterprises, and of reports on the extent of the implementation of EMA and the conditions which encourage this. The book is intended for all those interested in EMA as either researchers or practitioners. It will also be of interest both to those interested in how well-established management accounting methods can be adapted and extended in order to meet new demands on companies, and also to environmental managers interested in learning how accounting techniques can be of value in achieving environmental management objectives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzes both theoretically and empirically management accounting system choices in family firms with family CEOs in comparison to non-family firms and family firms with external CEOs. After theorizing differences with regard to both decision-facilitating (timeliness of management accounting information) and decision-influencing (objective performance evaluation, target specificity, target deviation tolerance) management controls, I argue that family CEOs with a propensity for technocratic decision making are better capable of balancing family and business perspectives. This implies that technocratic decision making weakens the family effect on management accounting system choices. Drawing on a dataset of 190 Austrian small and medium-sized firms from the manufacturing industry the results indicate idiosyncratic behavior of family firms in terms of management accounting system choices. Furthermore, the results corroborate the hypothesis that technocratic decision making moderates the family effect on management accounting systems. Finally, I also conduct an exploratory performance analysis to shed more light on the performance effects of management accounting systems in family firms. The findings indicate that only timeliness of management accounting information displays a significant positive effect while the decision-influencing management controls are not related to firm performance.

Book excerpt: Management Accounting 2nd edition has been revised inresponse to changes in the global business environment. Unbridledaccess to information, intense competition and ongoing challengesin the corporate world have meant that cost accounting has becomean increasingly important tool for managers and accountants alike. Most textbooks focus on content knowledge and then expect studentsto 'magically' demonstrate skills such as decision-making andcritical thinking. As many students fail to recognise the assumptions, limitations, behavioural implications and qualitative factors that influencemanagerial decision-making, this text will better prepare studentsfor professional success by bridging the gaps between knowledge, skills and abilities. The textbook is written in a style that is accessible tostudents and includes chapter scene setters, realistic illustrativeexamples, self-study problems and unique problem materialstructured to encourage students to think about accounting problemsand problem-solving more complexly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the conceptualization of bounded rationality, management scholars started investigating how people—managers and entrepreneurs—really make decisions within (and for) organizations. The aim of this eBook is to deeply investigate trends that have flourished within this pivotal research area in conceptual and/or empirical terms, trying to provide new insights on how managers and entrepreneurs make decisions within and for organizations. In this vein, readers that approach this eBook will be taken by hand and accompanied to the discovery of how the mind of decision makers is at the basis of organizational developments or failures. In this regard, published contributions in this eBook underline how executives and entrepreneurs must be ecologically rational, thus be aware of the negative and positive effects that biases can have depending on the context and use them at their advantage. Managerial and entrepreneurial decision-making are phenomena that cannot be detached from the environment in which executives and entrepreneurs are embedded, claiming to establish new approaches to research that looks at decision-making as an individual/group/organization-environment dialectical and multi-level phenomenon.
