Book Synopsis The Leisler Papers, 1689-1691 by : Peter R. Christoph

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacob Leisler has been more an icon in historical writing than a person. That the icon has served very different groups over the centuries only shows that is has had little to do with the real person. In his own century he was both the fanatical and villainous despot and the martyred hero. In later times he was a forerunner of American democracy, and a symbol of colonial rebelliousness. He has also been pilloried in the Catholic press, not without justification, although Catholics were not among those treated most harshly during his administration. To Marxist theoreticians he was a voice for the proletariat; to National Socialist propagandists he was a German martyr. In short, much that has been written about Leisler has had to do with the interests of various groups and causes, many of them unrelated, or only distantly related, to anything happening in Leisler's time. It is only today that articles and books are beginning to appear in which his career is examined dispassionately. Many of the untruths are so ingrained that one must almost begin by saying what is not true before going on to discuss what is true about Leisler. Suffice it to say that, despite a long tradition of popular writing that he was base-born, resentful of being outside the mainstream of colonial life and commerce, and failing in his enterprises, he none of these. For much of our enlightenment we are indebted to the research by David William Voorhees, who has assembled copies of several thousand documents from private institutions and government archives from throughout Europe and North America.

This book was released on 2012-02-09 with total page 605 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 2 of 2. I must confess I know little, if anything, about the War of 1812 with the USA, which is the subject of this book. For anybody else in the same boat, who wants to learn about it, this 1000-page account will go a long way towards remedying that lack of knowledge. It is a contemporary account, published a few years after the war, which officially ended in December 1814 though hostilities dragged on. As you might expect, the prose is flowery, written at a time when authors were not inclined to simply call a spade a shovel, but rather tended to elaborate with wordy sentences. That said, it is a very comprehensive account with great attention to detail, beginning with the causes for the war during which an American invasion of Canada was sharply seen off. There are numerous appendices containing official correspondence, the wording of the Peace Treaty drawn up in Ghent in December 1814 (though hostilities did not cease for a two or three months) and casualty figures for various engagements. Battle honours awarded to the British forces engaged included Detroit, Niagara, Miami and Queenstown, but on the other hand James is severely critical of what he calls the misbehaviour in action of two British regiments, the 44th and 21st Foot, described as “the two worst disciplined corps on the field at New Orleans.” The problem for the British was the threat from Napoleon, and it wasn't till the Spring of 1814, after his fall, that they were able to reinforce significantly their naval and military forces forces; nevertheless they were certainly pleased to see the end of the war. It was during this conflict that Washington was taken and the Capitol burned – and that reminds me of a story an American officer colleague told me. He was attending a military conference chaired by US colonel and at some point the British representative, also a colonel, was proving difficult. Eventually the exasperated chairman thumped the table saying: “What can you expect from the guys who burned Washington!” The British officer replied: “Really? I know we did Joan of Arc but I didn't know we did George as well!” Evidently I was not alone in my ignorance.

Book Synopsis The Story Of A Soldier’s Life by : Field Marshal Viscount Garnet Wolseley

This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few men in the Victorian Age achieved the stature of Field Marshal Garnet Wolesley, a dedicated soldier, man of foresight and vision, colonial administrator and up holder of the Pax Britannica from India to Africa. Viscount Wolseley started his military career in the little-known Second Anglo-Burmese War (1852), before being plunged into the bloody senseless conflict of the Crimean War (1854-55). His disgust of the mismanagement and amateurish conduct of the British army left him with a lifelong dedication to efficiency, his men and victory. Distinguished for his bravery during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1858), at Alambagh and Lucknow, and again during an expedition to China. His globetrotting career led him to North America where he was present during the early battles of the Civil War and his anecdotes of this time are pithy and worthy enough to be quoted even to this day. Duty called him away north to Canada to re-establish British dominion over the Red River province which he did with aplomb. He was now among the top generals of the British army; and was sent to bring the Ashanti campaign to a successful conclusion. He took over command from Lord Chelmsford in 1878 after the disastrous start to the Zulu war which he ruthlessly won with tenacity and dedication. However his finest hour was yet to come in Egypt; he destroyed the rebellion of Urabi Pasha in short order after the battle of Tel-el-Kebir and commanded the ill-fated, but ultimately brilliant, effort to relieve General Gordon in Khartoum. His two volume memoirs recount his brilliant career to his famous victory in the Ashanti War 1873-1874 and are a must read for anyone interested in the Victorian age or the British Empire.

Book Synopsis Journal Of A Soldier Of The 71st Regiment From 1806 to 1815 by : Anonymous (Thomas)
Download or read book Journal Of A Soldier Of The 71st Regiment From 1806 to 1815 written by Anonymous (Thomas) and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08-21 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is the journal of an anonymous soldier from Edinburgh, known only as Thomas, having enlisted as a short term soldier for seven years in 1806. He was not motivated by any thought of gaining glory in the wars against France; his motive for enlisting was his lost honour and the shame of having wronged his parents following a failed attempt at a stage career. He was an educated man and wrote very well, but, haunted by the dishonour of his actions, he took the King’s shilling from the first recruiting sergeant that was passing. Unknown to him this regiment was the 71st, later Highland Light Infantry, a regiment of great renown and élan that had and would be in the forefront of the fighting. Thomas saw his redemption in a journey through the purgatory of service as a private soldier in the British army. His travails would be hard and the privations many but bound by his word he sticks to his resolution. He was to campaign far and wide: from the expedition to Buenos Ayres, during which he was captured, to the despicable conditions of the retreat to Coruña, fever-ridden Walcheren, battles and skirmishes in the Peninsula including Roleia, Vimiero, Fuentes D’Oñoro, Vittoria, Bayonne and the Nivelle, and finally the battle of Waterloo. His discharge followed soon after and, despite being back in his homeland of Scotland, the penury of an ex-serviceman was his only reward. A vivid and uncompromising tale of hard fighting, privation and the realities of war.
