Book Synopsis Work Accommodation and Retention in Mental Health by : Izabela Z. Schultz
Download or read book Work Accommodation and Retention in Mental Health written by Izabela Z. Schultz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-16 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing interest in the field of mental health in the workplace among policy makers, clinicians, and researchers alike has been fueled by equal employment rights legislation and increasing disability statistics in mental heath. The importance of addressing this topic is underscored by the fact that depression now ranks second on the hierarchy of occupational disabilities. The problem is compounded by a host of factors, including major difficulties in job retention and productivity experienced by persons with mental health disabilities; younger age and higher education of persons with mental health problems; and labor shortages and an aging workforce in many industrialized countries. In addition, particularly in the United States, the vocational needs of army veterans returning from duty with mental health disorders require system-based solutions and new rehabilitation approaches. The pressure created by these powerful legislative, societal, and economic forces has not been matched by the state of evidence-based practices in the field of employment retention and job accommodation in mental health. Current research evidence is fragmented, limited in scope, difficult to access, and adversely affected by the traditional divide between the fields of psychiatry and psychology on one hand and interdisciplinary employment research and practices on the other. As a result, policy makers, employers, disability compensation systems, and rehabilitation and disability management professionals have been left without a critical "how to" evidence-informed toolbox for occupational practices to accommodate and retain persons with mental health disabilities in the workplace. Currently, no single source of knowledge and research evidence exists in the field that would guide best practices. Yet the need for workplace accommodations for persons with mental health disabilities has been growing and, based on epidemiological trends, is anticipated to grow even more in the future. These trends leave physicians, psychologists, occupational therapists, vocational rehabilitation professionals, disability managers, human resource professionals, and policy makers poorly prepared to face the challenge of integrating and maintaining persons with mental health disabilities in the workplace. The aim of the Handbook is to close the gap between the needs of the professionals and networks that work with or study persons with mental heath disorders in an employment context and the actual knowledge base in the field. The Handbook will be written in language that can easily be understood by readers representing a multitude of disciplines and research paradigms spanning the mental health, rehabilitation, and employment fields of inquiry. The Handbook will contribute an integration of the best quantitative and qualitative research in the field, together with experts’ consensus, regarding effective work retention and accommodation strategies and practices in mental health. The book will consist of five major sections, divided into chapters written by recognized experts in these areas.

Book Synopsis Assistive Technologies for Assessment and Recovery of Neurological Impairments by : Stasolla, Fabrizio
Download or read book Assistive Technologies for Assessment and Recovery of Neurological Impairments written by Stasolla, Fabrizio and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-10-22 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People with neurological disorders may experience significant problems, isolation, detachment, and passivity while dealing with environmental requests. They constantly rely on caregivers and family assistance, which can create negative outcomes on their quality of life. An emerging way to overcome these issues is assistive technology-based interventions (AT). AT-based programs are designed to fill the gap between human/individual capacities or skills and environmental requests. These technologies can also bring about independence and self-determination and provide people with neurological disorders an active role, positive participation, and an enhanced status in being able to achieve functional daily activities by reducing the roles of their families and caregivers. The positive impacts of this technology are an important area of research, and its usage for neurological disorders is critical for the assessment and recovery of patients. Assistive Technologies for Assessment and Recovery of Neurological Impairments explores the use of AT-based programs for promoting independence and self-determination of individuals with neurological disorders. The chapters discuss AT-based interventions in detail with the specific technologies that are being used, the positive effects on patients, and evidence-based practices. This book also focuses on specific technologies such as virtual reality (VR) setups and augmented reality (AR) as valid ecological environments for patients that ensure methodological control and behavioral tracking for both assessment and rehabilitation purposes. This book is essential for occupational therapists, speech therapists, physiotherapists, neurologists, caregivers, psychologists, practitioners, medical professionals, medical technologists, IT consultants, academicians, and students interested in assistive technology interventions for people with neurological impairments.

This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health and well-being is best understood in terms of a combination of biological, psychological, and social factors. But how ‘social’ is the biopsychosocial model when applied to mental health and rehabilitation? Psychology has traditionally viewed health as being determined by individual behavior. An integrative psychological approach is required to draw understanding from sociology, social psychology, and politics to consider how wider systemic, structural, and contextual factors impact on health behavior and outcomes. This e-book is dedicated to examining collective and community approaches to well-being and rehabilitation. In particular, the articles contained within this e-book are seeking to understand how social integration, social groups, social identity, and social capital influence health, well-being, and rehabilitation outcomes.

Book Synopsis Neuropsychological Rehabilitation by : Barbara A. Wilson
Download or read book Neuropsychological Rehabilitation written by Barbara A. Wilson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2005-09-23 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together theoretical and clinical aspects of Neuropsychological Rehabilitation. Following an introductory chapter and a brief history of Neuropsychological Rehabilitation, there are chapters on specific cognitive deficits (attention, executive deficits, memory, and language). The next section addresses rehabilitation of emotional, social and behavioural disorders. Then comes a section on specific groups of people (children, people with dementia and people in reduced states of awareness. Although the main focus of the book is on adults with non-progressive brain injury, these other groups are included as NR is being increasingly employed with them. The book concludes with a chapter on systems of service delivery and another on the future of NR. Thus this book covers a number of aspects of NR and is broader in outlook than most existing books in this area. It presents current practice techniques in cognitive rehabilitation from a conceptual and theoretical perspective. It offers both clinicians and researchers a sense of the research and theory underlying current clinical applications. The main audience will be clinical neuropsychologists especially those working in rehabilitation. Other audiences include clinical psychologists working with people who have mental health problems, schizophrenia or are elderly; occupational therapists; speech and language therapists and rehabilitation doctors. It is likely that some social workers, nurses psychiatrists and neurologists will also want to read the book.
