In architecture, the term modern means an architecture that is acutely responsive to the demands of current accommodation while utilizing the most advanced techniques available in order to achieve an apt expression of its particular now. In other words, modern architecture, in each era, means an architecture devoted to accommodating life. In recent decades, an architecture of true relevance to life concerns has been conspicuously absent as a cultural force. In its stead, a succession of design initiatives divorced from their social moorings, dedicated primarily to image and motivated as much by subjective whim or the dictates of fashion as by any direct response to human need, has long been dominating the determination of the human habitat. It is vitally important that we consider where we are and how we got here and make an attempt to point the way toward a new modern architecture, an architecture that enhances existence, an architecture that encompassing both use and beauty and accommodates and enhances life (Martin Bloom).

Book excerpt: For vulnerable older, disabled, or homeless people who need accommodation and support, a variety of different services have been developed, from hostels and group homes to extra-care housing and retirement villages. But do these settings effectively improve the well-being of those who live in them? This book explores the rationale behind these accommodations and the impact different forms of accommodation policy and practice have on the lives of vulnerable people, arguing for a flexible policy approach that places people in control of their own lives. Applying an original evaluation framework to case studies in the United Kingdom and Sweden--two countries with long and differing service histories--Accommodating Difference raises important questions, making it a valuable resource for supported housing practitioners and policy makers, as well as for students of urban studies, planning, and health and social care.

Book excerpt: Break Free From Over-Functioning, Over-Delivering, People-Pleasing, and Ignoring Your Own Needs So You Can Finally Live the Life You Deserve! Most of us were never taught how to effectively express our preferences, desires or deal-breakers. Instead, we hide our feelings behind passive-aggressive behavior, deny our own truths, or push our emotions down until we get depressed or so frustrated that we explode, potentially destroying hard-won trust and relationships. The most successful and satisfied people on the planet have one thing in common: the ability to create and communicate clear, healthy boundaries. This ability is, hands down, the biggest game changer when it comes to creating a healthy, happy, self-determined life. In Boundary Boss, psychotherapist Terri Cole reveals a specific set of skills that can help you stop abandoning yourself for the sake of others (without guilt or drama) and get empowered to consciously take control of every aspect of your emotional, spiritual, physical, personal, and professional life. Since becoming a Boundary Boss is a process, Cole also offers actionable strategies, scripts, and techniques that can be used in the moment, whenever you need them. You will learn: • How to recognize when your boundaries have been violated and what to do next • How your unique “Boundary Blueprint” is unconsciously driving your boundary behaviors, and strategies to redesign it • Powerful boundary scripts so in the moment you will know what to say • How to manage “Boundary Destroyers”—including emotional manipulators, narcissists, and other toxic personalities • Where you fall on the spectrum of codependency and how to create healthy, balanced relationships This book is for women who are exhausted from over-giving, overdoing, and even over-feeling. If you’re getting it all done but at the expense of yourself, give yourself the gift of Boundary Boss.

There is no competition because there are no other books like it on the market and also because of the breadth and importance of the topics that are covered by leading-edge researchers in the field....Would be an excellent centerpiece for graduate courses in personality psychology. It provides state-of-the-art reviews of theories, statistical methods, assessment methods, and research findings. The topics and the quality of the writing should make the book highly appealing to students in both personality and abnormal psychology."--PsycCRITIQUES This long-awaited, completely new update to a classic text offers a state-of-the-art overview of a rapidly growing field that seeks to integrate the study of normal and abnormal personality. Written by some of the most influential personologists of the 21st century, including Aaron Beck, C. Divided into three parts, the book presents an overview of major theories, statistical methods, and measurement instruments, including: Seven influential models of personality and psychopathology Four statistical methods for use in taxonomy, diagnosis, similarities and differences between normal and abnormal personality, and genetic and environmental influences Problems and pitfalls in designing empirical studies in the realm of normal-abnormal personality Empirically-based introductions and reviews of five widely-used instruments for assessing normal-abnormal personality

Park has long been recognized as one of the most influential thinkers in early American sociology, yet virtually all of his works appearing before 1913 were published in popular magazines and were dismissed as nonsociological muckraking. In Militarism, Imperialism, and Racial Accommodation: An Analysis and Interpretation of the Early Writings of Robert E. Park, Stanford M. Lyman examines and reprints many of these little-known works, including Park's essays on German military organization, his exposés of the atrocities committed by Belgium's Leopold II in the Congo State, his studies of the black community in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and of Booker T. Washington's agricultural education program at Tuskegee, Alabama. Lyman shows clearly that Park's essays, written outside the academy, formulated a far more complex perspective on modern modes of evil than any proposed by his contemporaries, thereby influencing sociological debates for decades to come. By writing his essays on topical subjects and by publishing them for a public audience, Park dramatized his profound belief that the struggle to achieve racial accommodation and to establish a true and lasting democracy is a concern for all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arnold Huijgen analyses und assesses the idea of divine accommodation in John Calvin's theology. He proves that Calvin's idea of accommodation was terminologically influenced by Erasmus, while its content originated in patristic theology. Though Calvin's idea of accommodation is multifaceted, Huijgen subsumes and analyzes it in the light of the two main perspectives of pedagogy and revelation. The pedagogical aspect relates to Calvin's understanding of salvation history, and the relation between the Old and the New Testament. In this perspective Christ as the mediator holds a central position. The aspect of revelation focuses on Calvin's comprehension of God's nature which for him is behind God's revelation. Calvin's understanding of accommodation implies a distinct dynamic to revelation, which is disrupted by its static, hierarchical ontology. Huijgen points out the weaknesses of Calvin's idea of accommodation on the basis of modern critiques by Karl Barth, Isaak August Dorner, and Harry M. Kuitert; he also explores the viable points for present day theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the 19th century the True, the Good, and the Beautiful preserved their precarious existence… But their very earnestness was their undoing… ~ Bertrand Russell In following a dilettante’s story, the reader will find a sense of what culture past and present can offer in the way of “the True, the Good, and the Beautiful” — a vision of life that rarely appears in contemporary discourse, even though this conceptual trinity was once a major element in Western civilization’s intellectual foundation. Analytic and artistic voices, evoking this concept in one way or another, are presented as the author chronicles his own intellectual excursions, while reviving a sense of the true dilettante. With a Thousand Antennas indicates how a lively curiosity, a moral sense, and an esthetic sensibility can provide a handle on life, a means to obtain a stable perspective on how to proceed through our allotted time.
