It will become clear to the reader that dendritic cells often play a dual role during viral infections. On the one hand they are able to mount potent antiviral immune responses, and on the other hand several viruses, including HIV-1, use DC as a vector to be transferred from the periphery to the lymph nodes where they infect their prime target.

Book excerpt: For over 25 years the study of retroviruses has underpinned much of what is known about information transfer in cells and the genetic and biochemical mechanisms that underlie cell growth and cancer induction. Emergent diseases such as AIDS and adult T-cell lymphoma have widened even further the community of investigators directly concerned with retroviruses, a development that has highlighted the need for an integrated understanding of their biology and their unique association with host genomes. This remarkable volume satisfies that need. Written by a group of the field's most distinguished investigators, rigorously edited to provide a seamless narrative, and elegantly designed for clarity and readability, this book is an instant classic that demands attention from scientists and physicians studying retroviruses and the disorders in which they play a role.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Follicular dendritic cells (FOe) are unique among cells of the immune system. While their morphological characteristics re sulted in their inclusion as a 'dendritic cell type', tt1ey differ quite significantly from the other members of the dendritic cell family. In contrast to T-cell-associated dendritic cells or the Langerhans cells found in the skin, FOe reside in highly organized B cell follicles within secondary lymphoid tissues. This site of resi dence provided a nomenclature committee in 1982 with the second descriptive factor for the derivation of their name. The cardinal feature of FOe is to trap and retain antigen on the surface of their dendritic processes for extended amounts of time and it is this feature that provides the conceptual compo nent for the title of this book. In response to an antigenic challenge, primary B cell follicles undergo dynamic events, giving rise to germinal centers which are associated with activation, expansion, and differentiation processes of B cells. The interactions of B cells with Foe and T cells in the germinal centers are essential for generating the complete repertoire of antibody isotypes obtained during an antibody response. In addition, stimuli either initiated or main tained during the germinal center reponse leads to production of high affinity antibodies through the processes of somatic muta tion and clonal selection. In this context, FOe act as a pivotal source of antigen. They accumulate foreign proteins (e. g.

Book excerpt: This book comprehensively covers the mechanisms of action and inhibitor design for HIV-1 integrase. It serves as a resource for scientists facing challenging drug design issues and researchers in antiviral drug discovery. Despite numerous review articles and isolated book chapters dealing with HIV-1 integrase, there has not been a single source for those working to devise anti-AIDS drugs against this promising target. But this book fills that gap and offers a valuable introduction to the field for the interdisciplinary scientists who will need to work together to design drugs that target HIV-1 integrase.

Book excerpt: At EC level the fight against AIDS, one of the major health problems and socioeconomic diseases today, is also part of the specific RTD programme in the field of biomedicine and health. About 600 research teams are collaborating within 30 concerted actions networks that are underpinned by centralised facilities. For example, the epidemiology research networks are monitored by the WHO/EC collaborating centre in St. Maurice, France. Common experiments on animal models, antiviral screening, genetic analysis of multiple virus strains and provision of reagents for vaccine development are also centralized facilities in AIDS research carried out under the principles of subsidiarity and Community added value. This publication presents an overview of their ongoing research activities in disease control and prevention, viro-immunological research, clinical research and vaccine development. Highly recommended for all medical and academic libraries.' - H. Robert Malinowsky, The University of Illinois, Chicago, USA. AIDS Book Review Journal, no. 27, June 1996
