Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is clear from assessment, graduation, and follow-up data that career-vocational technical education (CVTE), as it is practiced in Massachusetts, is a success. CVTE is becoming so popular that there are up to 5,000 more applicants for places in Massachusetts' vocational technical schools than there are openings, creating waiting lists. This paper examines the conditions that have created the present predicament whereby there are waiting lists for vocational education, and 52 Massachusetts cities and towns do not have access to either district or regional career vocational technical programs. It also examines funding for vocational-technical education; while vocational-technical education is more expensive than traditional high school, it would cost the state less than ư% of the FY16 education budget to provide 5,000 more CVTE placements in Massachusetts.

This collection seeks to contribute to the discourse on strengthening the fabric of a learning society crucial for future economic and social development, particularly in the aftermath of the coronavirus disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the economic growth and social development of a nation is reliant on its workforce, it is essential to increase the workforce’s employability through technical and vocational education. Through these programs, the nation’s workers will be able to acquire skills and flexibility in order to navigate across sectors of the economy and industry. However, due to gender disparities and socioeconomic statuses within society, women from a lower economic background are unable to gain access to these programs, hindering their career development and economic independence. Gender Issues in Technical and Vocational Education Programs is an essential critical resource that probes the issue of gender equity in specialized educational programs, such as vocational or technical education programs. It also presents global initiatives that are being undertaken to enhance the access to technical and vocational education programs to all citizens. Divided into two sections, this publication provides comprehensive coverage on understanding human resource skilling through vocational and training programs and promoting gender equity through skill development, making it an ideal resource for academicians, researchers, social scientists, educators, policymakers, government officials, and professionals.

Book excerpt: There has been much international effort to improve or transform Vocational and Technical Education (VTE). However, the outcomes often remain elusive. VTE continues to be largely shunned by society as a sector of education for low-achievers and academic failures.A Breakthrough in VTE: The Singapore Story shares the Singapore experience that was made possible through strategic planning, organisational excellence, innovation and ingenuity. It is a compelling story of how the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) began to transform lives and change its image over a period of fifteen years (1992-2007). This book, based on a first-hand CEO account, vividly captures the sort of leadership, policy choices, fundamental principles and capabilities in the journey of transformation. The details of the 'what, when, how and why' are a valuable guide for leaders and practitioners in building quality and sustainable VTE systems which are responsive to social and economic needs.

Book excerpt: "UNESCO has recently published the third volume of its Education on the Move series, a series dedicated to the analysis of key trends in education with the hope of inspiring dialogue among policy makers, educators and other key stakeholders on the challenges of education for tomorrow. The latest publication, entitled Unleashing the Potential: Transforming Technical and Vocational Education and Training is focused entirely on issues related to technical and vocational education and training (TVET). It takes stock of the steadily increasing demands and expectations on TVET systems around the globe and presents recent policy trends in the field of TVET. In their analysis, the authors provide insights into what it takes to unleash the potential of TVET systems around the world. They propose an integrated analytical approach that takes into consideration such factors as economic growth, social equity and issues related to sustainability so that TVET can contribute more effectively to contemporary policy issues such as youth unemployment, gender disparities and climate change. Overall, the book calls for a transformation of TVET systems to enable them to respond to the demands of their contexts. This transformation should enable TVET systems to acquire agility to stay current and responsive to the rapidly changing demands of the twenty-first century."--Publisher's website.

The primary purpose of technical and vocational education and training is to prepare students and learners for the world of work and for a smooth transition from education institutions into the workplace. As the Fourth Industrial Revolution continues to create more radical changes in the labor market, experts are calling for a reform of education, including vocational education and training and adult and professional education. Book excerpt: A perspective in vocational education has been designed to incorporate into one volume, some outstanding papers dealing with current issues, concept, and trends in vocational technical education. Some of the issues discussed in the book include various vocational programmes that are offered in Nigerian secondary and post secondary institutions, management, staffing, as well as trends on students enrollment. The above issues are essential in the training and development of students as well as planning and administration of vocational-technical programmes in secondary and post secondary institutions. A distinctive feature of the book is its blend in theory and practice particularly as related to vocational training and manpower development. Chapters 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11, and 18 specifically dealt with programmes, training, technological, and manpower advancement. All concept and terms that are presented in the book are explained and discussed within the simplest framework using updated references. The book can be used widely by both undergraduate and post-graduate students as well as teachers in the secondary and post-secondary institutions. The writing of this book affords me an opportunity to happily express my gratitude to some eminent people that have been used by God for sustained encouragement in my academic career. My long standing thanks go to Professor Michael N. Sugarman (My teacher at University of Akron, Ohio, U.S.A.) whose excellence in conduct, teaching, and researching have (for many years) inspired much of the driving spirit of my work.
