Written by an alumnus of the college, the series examines the continuing efforts of Saint Finbarrs College Old Boys Association to enliven the story of the institution and includes stories from numerous alumni who recall Father Slattery with fondness. The Rev. Slattery, an Irish priest, member of the Society of African Missions (a Roman Catholic missionary organization), and founder of the college, touched the lives of many students who have gone on to make significant personal and professional contributions to the world. In addition to educating students, the Rev. Slattery and his college made a huge difference in promoting the value of sportsmanship, discipline, and timeless values. While the Rev. Slattery died in 2003, his legacy can be seen throughout Nigeria and beyond. Book excerpt: Physics of skateboarding is presented as a motivational educational tool for skateboard enthusiasts of all ages. It addresses the fun, fellowship, and following of skateboarding. The journey of writing this book traced back to the previous ABICS Publications books with the theme of “physics of” an object of interest. We have seen “physics of soccer” and “physics in the kitchen.” Beyond writing this book as a sports-oriented book, we also designed it as a motivational tool of educational introduction to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Physics, as a science, is an essential part of human existence, whether in education, sports, industry, commerce, the home, and social settings. Physics is all around us and we should leverage it to have a better understanding of what we see, do, and experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current teaching, learning and assessment practices can lead students to believe that courses within a programme are self-sufficient and separate. Integrative Learning explores this issue, and considers how intentional learning helps students become integrative thinkers who can see connections in seemingly disparate information, and draw on a wide range of knowledge to make decisions. Written by international contributors who engaged reflectively with their teaching and their students’ learning, the book seeks to develop a shared language of integrative learning, encouraging students to adapt skills learned in one situation to problems encountered in another, and make autonomous connections across courses, between experiences, and throughout their lives. More informed teachers can help students develop the necessary attributes for intentional learning, which include having a sense of purpose, fitting fragmentary information into a ‘learning framework’, understanding something of their own learning processes, asking probing questions, reflecting on their own choices, and knowing when to ask for help. Integrative Learning draws on international research and vast studies to provide the reader with the resources to ensure access to a unified learning experience. The book discusses conceptual and technical tools necessary for facilitating integrative learning across a range of disciplines as well as providing learning pedagogies and considers integrative learning in the context of the relevance of higher education in the complexity and uncertainty of the 21st century. It will appeal to academics and researchers in the field of higher education, as well as those generating higher education curriculums.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, the Catholic Church around the world insisted it had a right to provide and organize its own schools. It decreed also that while nation states could lay down standards for secular curricula, pedagogy, and accommodation, Catholic parents should send their children to Catholic schools and be able to do so without suffering undue financial disadvantage. Thus, from the Pope down, the Church expressed deep opposition to increasing state intervention in schooling, especially during the nineteenth century. By the end of the 1920s however, it was satisfied with the school system in only a small number of countries. Ireland was one of those. There, the majority of primary and secondary schools were Catholic schools. The State left their management in the hands of clerics while simultaneously accepting financial responsibility for maintenance and teachers' salaries. During the period 1922-1967, the Church, unhindered by the State, promoted within the schools' practices aimed at 'the salvation of souls' and at the reproduction of a loyal middle class and clerics. The State supported that arrangement with the Church also acting on its behalf in aiming to produce a literate and numerate citizenry, in pursuing nation building, and in ensuring the preparation of an adequate number of secondary school graduates to address the needs of the public service and the professions. All of that took place at a financial cost much lower than the provision of a totally State-funded system of schooling would have entailed. Piety and Privilege seeks to understand the dynamic between Church and State through the lens of the twentieth century Irish education system.
