Book excerpt: Tha Angela NicilleDhuinn air seann leabhar a lorg – leabhar a bhuineadh do Dhaibhidh Brewster, an neach-saidheans Albannach a chruthaich an cailèideascop. Tha i air a chleachdadh gus ionnsramaid ùr nodha a chruthachadh, a tha a' dèanamh follaiseach na ceanglaichean brèagha eadar gach nì – agus gach duine – anns an t-saoghal. Ach, tha muinntir eile air tòir an fhiosrachaidh seo cuideachd, agus tha Angela a-nist ga faighinn fhèin ann an cunnart cho mòr gu bheil ceist oirre – am b' urrainn dhi fuireach ann an Alba? Dà cheud bliadhna às dèidh nan làithean nuair a bha Angela beò, tha eachdraiche òg air lorg fhaighinn air an sgeulachd aice. Agus le taic bho charaid àraid – a tha cracte air nobhailean mu dhèidhinn seann luchd- rannsachaidh prìobhaideach – tha i a' faighinn sealladh às ùr air ciamar a thàinig an cinne-daonna tro sgrios, cogadh, agus ùpraid, gu beatha shaor, bheairteach, far a bheil daoine a' dèanamh deiseil gus siubhal do na speuran. Tha Daibhidh Eyre air sgeulachd ghleusta is shiùbhlach a chruthachadh, a tha a' tòiseachadh am measg ath-bheothachadh na Gàidhlig san Eilean Sgitheanach, agus a' crìochnachadh anns na speuran. Turas thar-labhairt.

Book excerpt: All they wanted was land: land for crofting and land on which to build a house. In 1908, ten desperate men from the islands of Barra and Mingulay in the Western Isles were imprisoned in Edinburgh for refusing to leave the island of Vatersay, where they had built huts and planted potatoes without permission. The case caused an outcry throughout Scotland, and led eventually to the purchase of the island by the government for crofting. This book, the first about Vatersay, tells the remarkable story of the raiders and their struggle to escape from the poverty which the policies of an absentee landowner forced them to endure. The Vatersay Raiders documents not only these events, which had enormous significance in the history of crofting, but also the fascinating earlier history of Vatersay and its now-deserted neighbour Sandray. An outline of more recent developments brings the account up to date.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises various viewpoints representing a Catholic perspective on contemporary practices in medicine and biomedical research. The Roman Catholic Church has had a significant impact upon the formulation and application of moral values and principles to a wide range of controversial issues in bioethics. Catholic leaders, theologians, and bioethicists have elucidated and marshaled arguments to support the Church’s definitive positions on several bioethical issues, such as abortion, euthanasia, and reproductive cloning. Not all bioethical issues, however, have been definitively addressed by Catholic authorities, and some Church teachings allow for differing applications in diverse circumstances. Moreover, as new biomedical technologies emerge, Church authorities rely on experts in science, medicine, philosophy, theology, law, and other disciplines to advise them. Such experts continue to debate issues related to reproduction, genetics, end-of-life care, and health care policy. This volume will be a valuable resource for scholars in bioethics or Catholic studies, who will benefit from the nuanced arguments offered based on the latest research. This volume is also instructive for students entering the field to become aware of the founding philosophical and theological principles informing the Catholic bioethical worldview.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dà Shamhradh ann an Raineach is a historical novel written in Scottish Gaelic. It is set in 18th century Edinburgh and rural Perthshire, 20 years after the Battle of Culloden, a time of rapid social change and development in areas such as medicine, printing, the Church, the Gaelic language and agriculture. The novel is based on the facts that are known of the life of Dugald Buchanan, the poet and schoolteacher who made a major contribution to the first translation of the New Testament into Gaelic from the original Greek. He oversaw the printing of the New Testament in Edinburgh in 1767, the same year in which his own book of Spiritual Songs was published. These poems were to become enormously influential throughout the Gaelic speaking world. The greater part of the novel describes the last two years of his life and is narrated by his wife, Margaret. She outlived him by over 40 years and was in a position to look back over the tragic events which had struck the Buchanan family. As a result, the story ultimately becomes her own as much as that of Dugald.
