Book Synopsis Vascular Brachytherapy by : Ron Waksman
Download or read book Vascular Brachytherapy written by Ron Waksman and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1999-02-04 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the first coronary balloon angioplasty in 1977 came the challenge of the wound healing process of retenosis. Together these events spawned a new field of medicine, vascular brachytherapy, conceived to resolve this leading complication of vascular intervention. In the ensuing 20 year quest to cure restenosis, radiation vascular therapy appears to be the next logical step, but it still needs validation. Just two years after the first edition, this second edition of Vascular Brachytherapy fulfils the promise to provide updated information about the meteoric progress made from recent collaborative investigations within this field. Migrating from ideas and pre-clinical observation to clinical practice, this second edition contains 48 new or revised chapters contributed by well known medical experts from widely disparate fields of medicine. Scientists, cardiologists, radiation safety officers, regulators, engineers and technicians substantiate their observations with clinical and non-clinical data, basic radiation principles and issues from an economic, regulatory and safety perspective. Very little is known about the immediate patient risks, environmental concerns and long term pathobiological responses. For a field which is still in its honeymoon phase due to early technology success, this single volume will serve as a long-range educational tool and trace, giving the field of vascular brachytherapy the intense and continuous evaluation it deserves. For an audience of clinicians, scientists and researchers from all the represented medical disciplines, this book provides in depth information and exposure to subjects within these diverse areas of expertise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected as an outstanding book in vascular surgery by members of the Society for Vascular Surgery.* This unique new text describes the current understanding of the etiology and pathogenesis of human atherosclerosis. It also details the methods for quantitating and characterizing both experimental and clinical lesions, and describes the methods for preparing available animal models. Providing an in-depth review of each of these topics, the text organizes the information in one volume for the convenience of the reader. The text is divided into two sections. First is a description of the cell biology, biochemistry and pharmacology of normal vessels and of atherosclerotic human lesions, with details of the methods to accurately characterize and quantitate the disease. Secondly, it presents a description of the methods for preparing the available experimental animal models, including a discussion of the distribution and pathological characteristics of the lesions. It also includes comparisons of human atherosclerosis and experimental animal models. Intended to provide a basis for expediting future research in this priority health care area, this text compiles the available information for those who treat patients with atherosclerosis or who are involved in atherosclerosis research. It is of particular interest to students, physicians, and academic and commercial researchers.

Book Synopsis Arterial Mesenchyme and Arteriosclerosis by : William Wagner
Download or read book Arterial Mesenchyme and Arteriosclerosis written by William Wagner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presently, and in the past, the predominant investigative emphasis among research workers in arteriosclerosis has been on plasma and arterial lipids. Recent data from a number of laboratories suggest that arterial mesenchyme is of considerable importance in the pathogenesis and fate of arteriosclerotic lesions. The significance of some of these observations made it clear that there was need for intensified research on the connective tissue components of the arteriosclerotic lesion and that arteriosclerosis research workers could benefit from a more comprehensive view of the subject. Because of their experience in the field of arteriosclerosis and their interest in stimulating new directions for research on the lesion, the Committee on Coronary Artery Lesions and Myocardial Infarctions of the Council on Arteriosclerosis, American Heart Association, planned an International Workshop on Arterial Mesenchyme and Arteriosclerosis. The Workshop brought together scientists expert in connective tissue research and research on arteriosclerosis who presented the current status of knowledge in their areas of expertise. The Workshop was held April 2-3, 1973 at the Royal Orleans Hotel, New Orleans, Louisiana and was attended by more than 170 people. The twenty papers and discussions presented in this volume summarize the proceedings of the Workshop and represent a comprehensive review of the role of arterial mesenchyme in arteriosclerosis.
Book Synopsis Pathobiology of the Human Atherosclerotic Plaque by : Seymour Glagov
Download or read book Pathobiology of the Human Atherosclerotic Plaque written by Seymour Glagov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 933 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seymour Glagov The last meeting, devoted exclusively to an examination of the atherosclerotic plaque, took place in Chicago 25 years ago under the joint auspices of the Council on Arteriosclerosis of the American Heart Association and the Chicago Heart Association. The proceedings were published subsequently in a volume entitled "Evolution of the Atherosclerotic Plaque", edited by Richard J. Jones (1). Both experimental and human lesions were considered and several provocative new approaches to the disorder were discussed. The electron microscope was being applied systematically to the study of blood vessels at that time, so that details of the infrastructure and cellular composition of the artery wall and of atherosclerotic lesions were presented in some detail. There was, as one result of these explorations, considerable discussion of morphologic evidence suggesting that the principal cell involved in the atherogenic process was neither the fibroblast nor the macrophage, as had been supposed, but the smooth muscle cell. In particular, the findings indicated that this cell could incorporate lipid and become a foam cell.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Workshop - Conference on Atherosclerosis was held at the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada, September 1 - 3, 1975. This book does not represent in a strict sense the entire proceedings of the above Workshop - Conference, but does reflect largely the format and the essential content of the scientific sessions. Thus, each of the three Sections of the book is comprised of the summarized presentations either at the Plenary Sessions (Section I), Proffered Papers (Section II) or Workshops (Section III). Section I comprises all the presentations of the Plenary Session on September 1 and the first three presentations at the Plenary Session on the last day of the Conference (September 3). The remaining two addresses of the latter Session (Resume of Workshop - Conference and Closing Remarks) follow the Section III at the end of the book. Sections II and III are subdivided into Chapters which correspond to the individual Sessions of Proffered Papers and Workshops, respectively. To facilitate the orientation, particularly for those who attended the Workshop - Conference, a Summary Table of all Sessions of Proffered Papers designated as Chapters in this book, precedes Section II, and a similar Summary Table of Workshops, also designated as Chapters, precedes Section III. The Tables include, in addition, the names of both Chairmen of each Session. The Chairmen whose names do not appear on either Summary Table are those who chaired the two Plenary Sessions, i. e.

Book Synopsis The Artery and the Process of Arteriosclerosis by : Stewart Wolf
Download or read book The Artery and the Process of Arteriosclerosis written by Stewart Wolf and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-05-02 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume contains the first half of the edited tran script of a six-day Conference, "Fundamental Data on Reactions of Vascular Tissue in Man," held April 19-25, 1970, in Lindau, West Germany. The remainder of the proceedings, dealing with the epide miologic, clinical and preventive aspects of arteriosclerosis, will be published in a second volume. The Conference was held under the auspices of the International Society of Cardiology, the International Cardiology Foundation and the European Atherosclerosis Group. The aim of the Conference was to achieve a synthesis of present knowledge concerning arterioscle rosis. Therefore, workers were brought together from several coun tries and from various disciplines that do not ordinarily intercom municate for free exchange of data and ideas. Six broad subject areas were introduced by single papers; three of them are included in this volume. In the discussion which followed each formal pres entation, the participants attempted to reconcile disparate data and interpretations and to reach .a clear identification of important areas of ignorance and of crucial questions for future research. The format of the proceedings does not follow precisely that of the Conference itself. The formal papers are included, somewhat ab breviated, and excerpts of the discussion have been gathered under a series of topics arranged in logical sequence. Therefore, the quoted statements do not necessarily appear in order or in the place in the program where they were made. Principal issues, syntheses and unanswered questions are interspersed among the topics as edi torial comments.
