Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Inspired Collection of the Best of Abstract Art! Abstract art is a visual language--a riot of color, a profound explosion of texture and shape, a quiet collision of forms. Dynamic works of art can showcase pastel painting, showcase watercolor flowers, or even build off pen and ink drawings. Abstract artists are limited only by their imagination. And through instinct, composition and an inspired color palette, they translate emotions, ideas or experiences into immersive images you want to explore again and again. This book is a stunning volume of more than 100 award-winning abstract works showcasing the colorful and expressive nature of contemporary abstract art. Pieces have been hand-selected from the Pastel Journal's Pastel 100 competitions and The Artist's Magazine's annual competitions, hard-bound to provide years of beauty and enjoyment. Each painting is accompanied by an insightful critique from the artist. You may discover oil painting tips, watercolor techniques, details about creative process, artistic inspiration, and revelations on why abstraction is an important art form. "You need passion and dedication to do abstract work and that is really my best advice to aspiring artists. You have to let your heart and emotion lead you to where you want to go." --Denise Athanas, page 11 "For me abstract art can teach us about the beauty that lies deep within all our experience, often unseen until we change our perspective, remove our usual filters and allow our hearts and minds to open to the wonders of life." --Patricia Bevan, page 15

Book excerpt: Exploring cross-cultural scenarios in 20th-century art, this book introduces fresh perspectives on abstraction as a visual signifier of modernity by revealing the multiple directions that abstract art has taken in different international contexts. This groundbreaking collection shows how the heterogeneous qualities of abstraction have been cross-fertilised, from abstract expressionism onwards, by the creative discrepancies that arise when different cultural identities come face to face in the artistic imagination. Discrepant Abstraction is the second volume in the Annotating Art's Histories series. Contributors: Stanley Abe; David Clarke; Mark Cheetham; David Craven; Wilson Harris; Iftikhar Dadi; Kellie Jones; Nathaniel Mackey; Kobena Mercer and Angeline Morrison. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uncovers how we make meaning of abstraction, both historically and in present times, and examines abstract images as a visual language. The contributors demonstrate that abstraction is not primarily an artistic phenomenon, but rather arises from human beings’ desire to imagine, understand and communicate complex, ineffable concepts in fields ranging from fine art and philosophy to technologies of data visualization, from cartography and medicine to astronomy. The book will be of interest to scholars working in image studies, visual studies, art history, philosophy and aesthetics.

Book excerpt: Cloud computing represents an evolution in technology and a revolution in business, for when a fixed asset like a computer becomes variable and on demand, all sorts of agility and new cost structures open up. The Cloud rEvolution report tackles this new world of information technology in a four-volume series. "Laying the Foundation" (1) introduces the Cloud rEvolution and explores the core technologies that lay the groundwork for cloud computing. "The Art of Abstraction" (2) shows how abstraction loosens the IT stack for flexibility and efficiency, eying the ultimate abstraction: the cloud. "The Cloud Effect" (3) describes the impact the cloud is having on IT and business tactically and strategically. "A Workbook for Cloud Computing in the Enterprise" (4, downloadable separately) offers guidance for transitioning to the cloud, which is rapidly becoming a question of when and how, not if.

Writology takes you, the reader, on a chronological journey of evolutionary writing. Using all original creations, the author showcases how writing does not happen overnight. Just as coals turn into diamonds, so too does writing take time to become polished to perfection. Volumes II and III continues the journey by collecting his Freshmen and Sophmore years of high school level works. Volume II encompasses early attempts at research works and a brief flirt of a spirtiual quest. Volume III, considered to be the richest part of the entire planned Writologist Series (by the author himself) truly establishes writing becoming a core passion for H.A. Calahan. As with Volume I, these collected volumes contain original sketches and artwork created by the author. Accented with author commentary.Several suggested exercises based on original assignments or creations are also included to help readers continue their own journey. This journey continues now!

Book excerpt: This book explores the development of abstraction from the moment of its declaration around 1912 to its establishment as the foundation of avant-garde practice in the mid-1920s. The book brings together many of the most influential works in abstractions early history to draw a cross-media portrait of this watershed moment in which traditional art was reinvented in a wholesale way. Works are presented in groups that serve as case studies, each engaging a key topic in abstractions first years: an artist, a movement, an exhibition or thematic concern. Key focal points include Vasily Kandinskys ambitious Compositions V, VI and VII; a selection of Piet Mondrians work that offers a distilled narrative of his trajectory to Neo-plasticism; and all the extant Suprematist pictures that Kazimir Malevich showed in the landmark 0.10 exhibition in 1915.0Exhibition: MoMA, New York, USA (23.12.2012-15.4.2013).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first English-language study of the influential French painter Robert Delaunay to appear in thirty years. Delaunay has long been appreciated as one of the leading Parisian artists of the early twentieth century. And art historians have consistently viewed his vibrantly colored paintings starting in 1912 as early experiments in abstraction. Hughes, however, tautly argues that Delaunay was not just one of the earliest artists to work in pure abstraction, but the earliest one to do so. The colorful, optically driven canvases that Delaunay produced set him apart from the more ethereal abstraction of Kandinsky, Mondrian, Malevich, and Kupka, with whom he is often clubbed and whose spiritual motivations he rejected. Delaunay s paintings were grounded in material sensation and reflected the modern optical science of his time. They had nothing in common with the idealism that drove Kandinsky and the others. As a result, his work set the stage not only for the kind of abstraction that would come to dominate painting in the mid twentieth century (Pollock, Stella, Still, Kline); it also inspired the critics who theorized and elevated that particular strain of modernist practice."
