Book excerpt: A new, high-temperature, infrared radiation source was used in conjunction with a rapid-scanning spectrometer to obtain absorption spectra at an 800 percent rate from composite solid propellant flames during both constant and varying pressure. The propellants studied were AP-HTPB composites. The 3.17 micron H2O, 4.26 micron CO2, and 4.72 micron CO absorption bands were calibrated so that the time-dependent variations in the gas phase concentration of these combustion products could be measured. High-frequency oscillations (200-300Hz) were present even in constant pressure tests and are believed to be associated with inhomogenieties along the optical path length in the flame. During forced oscillation pressure tests at frequencies of 20 to 100 Hz., the composition and temperature of the propellant flame oscillated in phase with the pressure. A study of the variation in the absorption spectra for the major combustion products indicates that prior interpretations of flame emission data during transient pressure conditions were incorrect; however, a principal conclusion of this earlier study was confirmed. Significant gas phase composition variations are produced by pressure changes.

Book excerpt: Experimental improvements have been made in the ultraviolet (UV)-visible absorption spectroscopy technique applied to propellant flame diagnostics. The two-dimensional (2-D) feature of an intensified charge-coupled device (ICCD) detector was used to simultaneously record multiple, spatially distinct absorption spectra over a region of 0.35 cm. Temporal resolution has been increased to 1 ms by pulsing a simmering xenon arc lamp. The resulting increase in the light intensity by 30 to 70 times over the nonpulsed output provides the necessary light flux to achieve single-pulse, multiple absorption spectra. Species with low concentrations can be measured with the inclusion of multiple-pass optics to increase the effective path length through the combustion region. Due to broadband UV-visible absorption observed in propellant flame spectra, only 20% of the incident light is typically transmitted. However, inclusion of a calibrated neutral density filter during the measurement of the incident intensity (I0) allows the dynamic range of the detector to be effectively increased by a factor of 5. With these improvements, temperature and OH and NO concentration maps, with 1-ms temporal resolution, have been determined for two different propellant flames.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A multichannel infrared (IR) absorption technique has been developed and applied to the study of solid propellant flames. Infrared absorption spectra of HCN, H20, N20, CO, CO2, and CH4 have been obtained through the dark zone of solid propellant flames during steady-state combustion conditions through the use of a 1,O24-element platinum silicide (PtSi) array detector. The experiment consists of a quartz tungsten halogen lamp as the source, a 0.320-m spectrometer with a 75-groove/mm grating, the PtSi array detector, and a windowed strand burner where cylindrical propellant samples are burned cigarette fashion in the presence of nitrogen buffer gas. Experimental results for the nitramine propellants XM39 and M43 and a double-base propellant JA2 are presented, and estimates for the temperature and species concentration are given through the use of the HITRAN database and associated PC programs. Comparisons are made between this work, other published measurements, and thermochemical equilibrium calculations.

Book excerpt: A safety analysis of aluminized solid rocket propellant burning at atmospheric pressure is desired. An attempt is made to simulate propellant levitating above a substrate due to the thrust generated by its plume using a motorized support apparatus. This study investigates the temperatures of the plume and burning aluminum droplets with varying substrates, propellant slug diameters, propellant formulations, and gap heights. Two spectrometers were used to collect broadband and narrowband spectral emissions from the plume underneath and immediately adjacent to the propellant-substrate gap. Spectral data were collected as the apparatus passed horizontally through the gap in order to characterize temperatures as a function of flame depth. The broadband spectra were fitted to a linearized Planck's function to estimate gas temperature for several values of emissivity, while the blue-green narrowband spectra were fitted to aluminum monoxide line strength files to calculate the temperature of the burning aluminum. Results indicate the aluminum monoxide flame temperature is generally hotter than the surrounding plume temperature. Calculated temperatures showed a generally flat trend as a function of depth from the center of the plume. Gas temperatures varied wildly and displayed no clear correlation with test variables. Post-test observations indicate that high-temperature chemical reactions within the substrate, phase changes, and the insulating effect of deposited alumina are likely causes for unpredictability.

Book excerpt: This report summarizes the progress made in solid propellant flame chemistry studies. These chemistry studies involved the spectroscopic determination of species concentration and temperature profiles in solid propellant flames at pressures from atmospheric to 7 MPa (1000 psi). The propellants involved contained AP and HMX, as well as several other formulations. The molecules studied were OH, CH, NH, and NO, primarily, although other atomic and molecular species were seen in the propellant flames in emission. The primary diagnostic employed was laser-induced fluorescence (LIF), although the chemiluminescence (emission) from the propellant flames was also studied. These experiments are continuing. Keywords: Models, Combustion diagnostics, Hydrogen oxygen, Carbon, Nitrogen, Chemical radicals. (aw).
