Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1864 edition. Excerpt: ... Greek words (especially en and eis) are sometimes properly rendered by other words than those just given; but we maintain that an unnecessary depirture from the meanings we have given is as unjust to the Greek as it would be to the English if a foreigner should say, because we speak of going into a mountain, the English word into does not include the idea of entering within, but merely of touching the surface, of coming upon it, and that, consequently, the English phrases, going iuto water, into a river, into the sea, into trouble, mean coming to or upon water, upon a river, upon the sea, upon trouble, but not entering within these. "Tji-Our translators say, in Matt, iis G, "were baptized of him tn Jordan," and at the 11th verse, "I indeed baptize with water." In Mark i. 4, 5, 9, they say, "did baptize tn the wilderness;..". "were all baptized of him tn the river of Jordan;.."." was baptized of John in Jordan;" and yet in the 8th verse they say, "I indeed have baptized you with water, but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost." Nothing but freedom from prejudice is noeded to see the injustice of the translation with water, and with the Holy Ghost, whilst the preposition en is the preposition in every one of these instances. Even prepossession cannot blind to the absurdity of saying--although it would not be more unjust to the original than is our translation, so much approved in this instance by some of the Psedobaptists--"were baptized of him with Jordan" (Matt iii. 6); "did baptize with the wilderness" (Mark i. 4); "were all baptized of him with the river of Jordan" (ver. 5); "was baptized of John with Jordan" (ver. 9). In vindication of our assertions respecting prepositions, we may subsequently speak. The error of other meanings...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Holy Baptism The following pages are an attempt to give a clear and simple account of the history of the administration of Holy Baptism, and of the Christian doctrine of Baptism. It is hoped that the relegation of references and of quotations in Greek or Latin, and of the discussion of some difficult matters, to the notes at the end of the book, may make it more useful to the general reader than it would otherwise be, and that any inconvenience thus caused to theological students may be but slight. For the sake of the general reader, also, translations of the Greek and Latin quotations in the notes have been added in all cases except where the passages have been fully quoted in English in the text; and dates and brief descriptions have been attached to the names in the index of authors and books referred to. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mode of Christian Baptism The little book, oi! Which this is a preface, was written because it is needed. I have frequently been asked by members of the church for a book on the mode of baptism, setting forth our views on that subject. And inasmuch as our church has no work on the mode of baptism suf ficiently comprehensive, and yet not too large, I have writ ten this to fill the vacancy. A great many Cumberland Presbyterians have heard immersion preached so much, and with such an air of triumph, without anything on the other side, that they have come to the conclusion that pouring or sprinkling are used only as a matter of ex pediency. They are told in the pulpit, and out of It, that baptize means nothing but dip or immerse, and your educated men know it. Our preachers have always been too busy preaching the gospel to spend much time in delivering lectures on the mode of baptism. The written page is what we need on this subject. I know of no book in our church or out of it, in which the mode of baptism is as thoroughly discussed, in a small compass, as l have done in this. I have aimed to use the right words, and as few of them as possible, so as to present the facts and arguments at command in a clear and distinct light. The reader can form but little conception of the labor and time spent in collating and arranging the facts as he sees them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Baptism: In Two Parts; Part First, Its Subjects; Part Second, Its Mode, Obligation, Import, and Relative Order It is well known to the student in church history, that few, very few, since the days of the apostles, have ever openly held to the damnation of any of those infants who die in infancy. The Calvinistic school forms the largest exception. There have been those who have held that all unbaptized infants, dying in infancy, go to a sort of middle state, between heaven and hell, as the reader will see in the fifth chapter of this work. Others, as St. Austin, (see pp. 209 with more consistency, held that where the want of baptism was not the fruit of any wicked and wilful disposition of the individual, he would be saved without it. The Protestant Episcopal Church, it appears, chooses, in regard to the state Of unbaptized infants hereafter, to observe entire silence. (see pp. 270, 271, of this work.) Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of Christian Baptism: An Exposition of Its Nature, Subjects, Mode, and Duty The nature, design, obligation, and efficacy of Christian baptism Should be carefully studied by all Christians, and especially by Christian ministers. This ordinance comes to us by Divine authority. When our Lord commissioned his disciples to go out and preach the gospel to all nations, he also commissioned them to baptize. The command to preach is no more authoritative than the command to baptize. They are joined together in the great commis sion. Here we date the divine origin of baptism as a standing, obligatory, and perpetual ordinance of the Christian Church. Here is the great charter from which the Christian ministry in all ages drew their Divine au thority for the administration of this ordinance.
