Book excerpt: This study aims to assess the mechanical properties, impact resistance, and abrasion resistance of a series of self-consolidating concrete (SCC) and normal vibrated concrete (NVC) mixtures under different curing conditions. The studied variables included coarse-to-fine (C/F) aggregate ratio (0.7 and 1.2), water-to-cement (w/c) ratio (0.4 and 0.55), the addition of 0.35% steel fibers (SFs), and the use of different supplementary cementing materials (SCMs) types (metakaolin (MK) and silica fume (SLF)). The research program was divided into three stages. The first stage included trial mixtures to optimize a number of SCC mixtures with different proportions. In this stage, the appropriate percentages of SCMs (MK or SLF) and the maximum percentage of SFs that can be used to develop successful SCC were optimized. The second stage included evaluation of the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and impact resistance of the optimized mixtures. The third stage investigated the flexural strength, modulus of elasticity, and abrasion resistance of the same optimized mixtures. All studied samples were cured under four different curing conditions, including moisture curing conditions at 23o C, air curing at 23o C, and cold temperatures curing conditions at +5o C and -10o C. Curing concrete at +5o C showed significant reductions in the abrasion strength, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength (STS), and impact resistance, when compared to moisture curing at 23o C. The magnitude of these reductions significantly increased when curing concrete at -10o C. Mixtures with higher C/F ratio, or higher w/b ratio, or mixtures with SFs or SCMs were more affected by the cold curing compared to the control mixture. The results also showed that cold temperature curing had a more pronounced negative effect on the impact resistance and STS compared to the compressive strength.

Book excerpt: This research program aims to investigate the mechanical properties, impact resistance, and abrasion resistance of steel fibers reinforced concrete under cold temperatures. The abrasion and impact resistance of steel fiber reinforced concrete were also evaluated before and after exposure to salt scaling. The studied parameters are the type of concrete (self-consolidated concrete and vibrated concrete), type of steel fibers (SFs) (coated and uncoated), SFs end conditions (needle, single-hooked ends and double-hooked ends), length of SFs (35 mm and 60 mm), volumes of SFs (0%, 0.35%, and 1%), saturation condition, coarse aggregate size (10 mm and 20 mm), coarse to fine aggregate ratio (0.7 and 2), and cement content (300 kg/m3 and 550 kg/m3). The mechanical properties of concrete were evaluated by conducting compressive strength, splitting tensile strength (STS) and flexural strength (FS) tests. The impact resistance was assessed by conducting two tests; drop weight test and flexural impact test. Meanwhile, the abrasion resistance of concrete was evaluated by performing rotating cutter test and sand blasting test. The results showed that salt scaled concrete specimens exhibited a considerable reduction in the impact and abrasion resistance compared to non-scaled concrete specimens. However, adding SFs (especially coated SFs) alleviated this reduction and contributed to improve the abrasion and impact resistance of salt scaled concrete surface. The results also revealed that decreasing the temperature below the room temperature (25OC) contributed to enhancing the compressive strength, STS, FS, abrasion resistance, and impact resistance of concrete mixtures. In the meantime, the effect of cold temperatures in enhancing the mechanical properties and abrasion resistance was more pronounced in the saturated samples compared to unsaturated samples. The results also showed that despite the negative effect of cold temperature in increasing the brittleness of concrete, using SFs helped to alleviate the low temperature brittleness of concrete and improved its mechanical properties and impact resistance.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effect of Curing Condition on the Wear and Strength of Concrete The necessity for careful restriction on the quantity of mixing water used in concrete, and the importance of proper curing conditions during the period of setting and hardening are not generally appreciated by engineers and contractors doing concrete work. In view of the wide spread use oi concrete in the construction of pavements, oors, loading platforms, and in other places requiring high strength and resistance to abrasion, it seemed desirable to carry out an experimental study which would bring out the effect Of water content and curing conditions on the compressive strength and the wearing resistance of concrete, and the relation between these two properties. These tests were made as a part of the experimental studies of the properties of concrete and concrete materials, being carried out through the co - operation of Lewis Institute and the Portland Cement Association at the Structural Materials Research Laboratory, Lewis Institute, Chicago. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current method of curing pervious concrete is to cover with plastic for 7 days, although no studies have been performed to determine if that is sufficient or even required. This paper presents results of combinations of four different pervious concrete mixtures cured using six common curing methods. The surface abrasion of the concrete was tested using a rotary cutter device according to ASTM C944. The results show that the concrete abrasion resistance was improved with a majority surface-applied curing compounds; however the surfaces covered with plastic sheets produced the lowest abrasion levels. A majority of the curing regimes also produced higher flexural strength than the control concrete. There was no significant difference observed in the strength between curing under plastic sheets for 7 or 28 days. Of the surface-applied curing compounds, the best abrasion resistance and highest strength concrete was that applied with soybean oil. The best abrasion resistance and highest strength overall was the mixture containing fly ash and cured under plastic for 28 days.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abrasion is the primary type of wear in almost all fields of industry. It is particularly relevant to the longevity of pipelines and pumps and to almost all processing industries and applications where a constant interface exists with abrasive substances such as dust, sediments, or fluids with mineral particles. The performance of systems can be degraded depending on the properties of abrasive particles such as size, velocity, angle of impact and shape. Furthermore, abrasion significantly affects the appearance of end-products, which can be especially important in applications where surface finishes are of prime importance. The use of materials which are resistant to abrasion can help retain the appearance of finished products, cut costs associated with maintenance and wear, and prevent system downtime. Materials which are abrasion-resistant are useful for situations where serious damage and mechanical wear can occur and where there is critical demand. The aim of this book is to evaluate abrasion-resistant materials that are already in use or under development, as well as to present information on new techniques in the design and application of such materials. This book will be of interest to a wide audience of engineers dealing with wear problems.
