The man we know today as Abraham not only claimed that one true Creator existed but also staked his entire life on this belief. Why, thousands of years later, are we still discussing the faith of this desert nomad? Book excerpt: Holy Grit: The Will to Persevere is a refreshing oasis in a culture parched by doubt and despair. It is a clarion call to leave the cave of resignation and begin a godly perseverance movement. M. Dean Register, a gifted pastoral theologian, draws on years of wisdom as he examines prominent figures from the Bible who chose to endure rather than quit. Having observed many people who once burned with devotion only to abandon their faith, Register makes an inspiring and compelling case for recovery. He deftly illustrates truth with engaging anecdotes that motivate readers to rejoin the company of the courageous in order to re-sign rather than resign. He also considers questions such as: • How can we experience the heat of a burning passion to persevere with holy grit? • Why is “waiting” an opportunity to seek Him in spirit and truth? • How can we find ways to forgive others? Holy Grit is a treasure for weary and wounded evangelicals and a straightforward challenge to reignite a love relationship with Jesus Christ. It is good medicine for anyone who needs to persevere when life hits hard.

Download or read book Abraham written by Terence E. Fretheim and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2024-03-12 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From God's surprising call to Abraham to leave home and family to God's enigmatic commands that he evict one son and sacrifice another, Genesis 12-25 is one of the most dramatic stories of the Old Testament. In an inviting style that showcases his literary discernment, theological sophistication, and passion for the biblical text, Terence E. Fretheim guides readers through the intricacies of the plot. Abraham, called "the father of a multitude" (Gen 17:5), lives up to his name as the patriarch of three major religious traditions. Fretheim examines Abraham's family and assesses the significant roles it plays across Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In addition, Fretheim contributes to the increasingly important interreligious dialogue surrounding Abraham by examining the continuing conversation among Muslims, Christians, and Jews about the place of Hagar and Ishmael in Abraham's family. Relating biblical narrative to theological concerns, Fretheim wrestles with such controversial concepts as God's selection of an elect people, the gift of land and other promises, the role of women and outsiders, the character of God, and the suffering of innocents. Throughout the text, Fretheim frames the narrative as rooted in the trials of family and faith that define Abraham as the father of three religions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: And the Name Wore Sandals is not written for those complacent souls who have been satisfied to remain within the outer court of redemption, justification, and even sanctification. Nor is it written to those who rest satisfied in the holy place of prayer, Christian fellowship, and Biblical study. Authored by Cynthia Seigart Bryan, it is targeted to those thirsting souls who will settle for nothing less than entering into the most holy place to behold the transforming glory of a resplendent God, seated upon his throne. The veil has been rent from top to bottom and we are beckoned to enter. A blend of science, philosophy, and scripture, And the Name Wore Sandals encourages Christians to approach the cloud of the unknowable and discover the God behind his ageless divine Hebraic names disclosed within the pages of the Old Testament. Not just one singular name, for all that is involved in this matchless infinite being cannot be fully contained in one name. This analysis shows how each name, like a wondrous prism, refracts his holy and effulgent glory into a kaleidoscope of personal meaning to be gazed upon and embraced.

The Seed of Salvation by the Word of God (Genesis 15:3-11) In the Book of Genesis, the purpose for which God created us is contained. When architects design a building or artists draw a painting, they first conceive the work that would be completed in their minds before they actually begin working on their project. Just like this, our God also had our salvation of mankind in His mind even before He created the heavens and the earth, and He made Adam and Eve with this purpose in mind. And God needed to explain to us the domain of Heaven, which is not seen by our eyes of the flesh, by drawing an analogy to the domain of the earth that we can all see and understand. Even before the foundation of the world, God wanted to save mankind perfectly by giving the gospel of the water and the Spirit to everyone's heart. So although all human beings were made out of dust, they must learn and know the gospel Truth of the water and the Spirit to benefit their own souls. If people continue to live without knowing the dominion of Heaven, they will lose not only the things of the earth, but also everything that belongs to Heaven.
