Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through his desire to obey God at all costs, even if it meant sacrificing his son, Abraham became the definitive model of faith for the major world religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In this bold look at the legacy of this story, Carol Delaney explores how the sacrifice rather than the protection of children became the focus of faith. Her strikingly original analysis also offers a new perspective on what unites and divides the peoples of the sibling religions derived from Abraham and, implicitly, a way to overcome the increasing violence among them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Speaking of Abraham, it is not the simple tale of a character of antiquity, who was famous Abraham that the Bible presents as the father of a people, that is the Jews. Because if this is true, in that it cannot be disputed, according to what the Bible says, it is also true that Abraham is not only the acknowledged father of the Jews, but it is also the father of faith, as the New Testament recognizes it as such. The purpose of our intervention, is not only to talk about this, but mainly highlight the characteristics that Abraham had that from the point of view of faith, made him famous, not only among the Jews, but also in the midst of Christianity. In fact, when Christianity speaks of Abraham and holds him up for example of faith, it does so primarily on the basis of the characteristics that showed in believing in God and in having faith in Him, in all that which God said and the promises the he promised. These are the essential elements of antiquity proved that this man in his time, which made him famous in this area of life, Christianity, do not hesitate to call the Christian character, supported especially by the testimony that the same Jesus He made when talking about him, and pointed for example model to the religious Jews who constantly challenged.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abraham was the same as we are today. He never dreamed of being called by God. Suddenly, while he and his relatives were in Chaldea worshipping other gods, the God of glory appeared to him. This appearing was a great attraction, enabling him to come out of his fallen background and accept God's calling. Although Abraham answered God's call, he did not do so immediately nor absolutely. Although he learned to live by faith, he had serious failures along the way. He followed God in a way not unlike us all. Eventually, he was brought to know grace for the fulfillment of God's purpose. In a remarkable commentary on the life of Abraham from the book of Genesis, Witness Lee presents Abraham as a genuine man, not unlike us all, fallen, but called by God. Like him, we have seen "the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ" and have been attracted to follow Him. Like him, we must learn the lessons of faith through trials, testing, and failure, in order to enter into the promises and blessings of God. Abraham--Called by God, taken from the Life-study of Genesis, presents a unique and vital view of the father of our faith.

Powerful kings claimed to be gods, building massive pyramids to achieve immortality. Out of this mass of misunderstandings, one man emerged. The man we know today as Abraham not only claimed that one true Creator existed but also staked his entire life on this belief. Why, thousands of years later, are we still discussing the faith of this desert nomad? One of America's most popular Bible teachers, Pastor Chuck Swindoll, answers that question and many more in this compelling and insightful biography that will inspire your own faith.

Book excerpt: The story of Abraham is a journey through life. It is a journey all of us are called to make. The circumstances may be different, the location most certainly will not be the same route as Abraham took, but the journey we take will face the same problems and same distractions which would seek to sideline us. Therefore, it is crucial to study these characters. As Solomon said, "Nothing is new under the sun". We can learn from these scriptures, which God has provided for us. Abraham starts his life in Ur of the Chaldeans, a godless place, and this is where we all start. We come into this life as sinners, and we must begin our journey there. Most people stay there, but some are called to start a journey. When Abraham reached Haran, he settled but was never going to stay there. Haran is Abraham's decision point, and we also will face a moment when we have to decide if we will press on towards the promised land or ignore the call of God. Abraham then journeys towards and arrives in the promised land but can only see it by faith. He does not possess it at this point but believes God will fulfil his promise. We, too, will own nothing in this world as our sights should be set way beyond earthly realms. God has promised us the same reward as Abraham, and we must keep that in sight as we move through our earthly journey. We should note that Abraham was called to leave his land, his family, and his homeland. We do not know what God will ask us to do, but you can be sure there will be sacrifices to make along the way, and we must be ready to make them. We must be prepared to lay aside everything that would burden us in our journey. When Abraham arrives in Shechem, he builds his first altar, and we also must build an altar and make a sacrifice, but Abraham then moves on to Bethel, which in Hebrew means 'House of God'. Likewise, building our first altar and making a sacrifice is not the end for us. We need to press on until we reach the House of God. The House of God is where we must be found. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although this work is written from a Christian viewpoint, it also presents the symbolic visions of the non-believer. The symbolic examination of God helps us to uncover what it means to be human, and where we are heading as a species. Symbols aid in conveying the abstract ideas that human languages are too limited to express. In the broadest sense, God symbolizes all the mysteries of existence. Any thinking person must ask the question, 'what is the ultimate significance of this frail and vulnerable flesh that clothes the human ego?' God symbolizes these important mysteries and beckons us to approach him for answers.
