Instead, he suggests that the interests of Indigenous peoples, settlers and immigrants are fundamentally shared, and proposes adaptation on both sides, but particularly for the descendants of settlers and immigrants, to allow them to embrace the framing of their identity by Indigenous presence. Book excerpt: Almost 40 years after the referendum which gave the Commonwealth - rather than the various states - power to make laws covering the Aboriginal people of Australia, there is little evidence that any real progress has been made towards bettering the Aborigines' position. The key issue during this time has been the battle for Aboriginal land rights. Despite High Court decisions on two cases favoring the Aborigines' cause, any real benefit to them has been largely negated by prolonged litigation over granting title, and by arguments as to whether the land in question should be used for economic benefit or simply retained for cultural preservation. Much attention and considerable financial resources have also been directed to Aboriginal health, where traditional areas of health concern have been replaced with problems such as alcoholism. Successive federal governments have devised numerous policies and programs intended to give Australia's Aboriginal peoples the right to self-determination, and have provided large sums to make this possible. On some occasions these policies have been replaced within twelve months indicating their lack of success. Aboriginal Affairs is a detailed and objective account from the time of the referendum of 1967, and argues the case for a total overhaul of government policies and programs.

The image that most white Australians have of those Aboriginal people, is mainly negative. Why is that so? What is the white Australians' source of knowledge about Aboriginal people? And most importantly: What role does the mainstream media in Australia play in the continuously bad relationship between white Australians and Aboriginal people? Does the mainstream media contribute to that conflict? And if so, in what way? In the following, I am going to try to answer those questions. I am going to try to shed some light on the role that the media is playing in the relationship between white Australians and Aboriginal people. In order to answer those questions, it seems indispensable, to first have a look into the history of Australia and Aboriginal Australians. I will outline the most important events in the history of Australia, starting with the arrival of the Indigenous people, ending with the current situation. After that, I will amplify the Aboriginal culture, assuming that to most readers it is largely unknown. In the main part of this work, I will then investigate the mainstream media coverage of Aboriginal affairs in Australia. I will try to ascertain in what manner the mainstream media treats Aboriginal topics. Further I want to determine if prejudices and stereotypes towards Aboriginal people exist, and how the current situation in the Australian society could be described. In the end, I will attempt to summarize my findings in a final conclusion.

The expanding British Empire had its own vision for the future of these peoples, which was expressed in 1837 by the Select Committee on Aborigines of the House of Commons. It was a vision of the steps necessary for them to become civilized, Christian, and citizens -- in a word, assimilated. This book provides the first systematic and comparative treatment of the social policy of assimilation that was followed in these three countries. The recommendations of the 1837 committee were broadly followed by each of the three countries, but there were major differences in the means that were used. Australia began with a denial of the aboriginal presence, Canada began establishing a register of all 'status' Indians, and New Zealand began by giving all Maori British citizenship.

For over 50,000 years their rich and varied culture revolved around the land. In 1788 began the white invasion of Australia which destroyed many Aboriginal communities. Thousands of Aborigines died of disease, from poisons, and in frontier wars when their land was stolen and used for agriculture, grazing and mining. Aboriginal rights were unrecognized in law. Two centuries later Aborigines have achieved legal equality. But their rights are often disregarded and they suffer massive inequalities in housing, education, employment and health compared to other Australians. They are more likely to be arrested and imprisoned. Since 1980 over 100 young Aboriginal men have died while in police custody. But the greatest loss has been of land and it is the need to regain and protect the land which has been the impetus behind contemporary Aboriginal political activity - a struggle which many Aborigines believe has been betrayed by successive governments. In the Northern Territory and South Australia large areas have come under Aboriginal ownership but other states have conceded little or nothing. Today an historic High Court judgment has opened the way to a new relationship between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians. Aboriginal Australians gives a concise and factual account of the major problems currently facing Aborigines. This updated edition traces developments into the 1990s, including the Mabo judgment and its consequences. A useful and detailed report on a unique people and their fight for justice, it should prove an invaluable resource for teachers, students, the media and all those interested in racism and Australia.
