Book excerpt: Originally published in 1963, this book examines the English Local Government, and more specifically, the Manor and the Parish, considering the various exemptions, immunities and franchises which enabled the inhabitants of particular localities to exclude the authority of the county at large, or that of one or other of its officers, and thereby enjoy, within their own favoured areas, some peculiar forms of self-government. The book includes chapters on the city and borough of Westminster, the boroughs of Wales, administration by municipal democracies and the municipal revolution.

Book Synopsis The Impact of the Edwardian Castles in Wales by : Diane Williams
Download or read book The Impact of the Edwardian Castles in Wales written by Diane Williams and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2009-12-16 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Impact of the Edwardian Castles in Wales publishes the proceedings of a conference held in 2007, a year that marked the seventh centenary of the death of King Edward I, which set out to review recent scholarship on castles that he built in north Wales after two wars, in 1277 and 1282-83 and a Welsh uprising in 1294-95, and to rethink the effect that their building had upon Wales in the past, present and future. Building upon the seminal work of Arnold Taylor, whose study of the buildings and documentary evidence has been pivotal to Edwardian castle studies for more than fifty years, the volume includes papers which call into question the role of Master James of St George as the architect of the kings new castles; the role of Richard the Engineer, the nature of royal accommodation in the thirteenth century and a detailed look at how households worked, especially in the kitchen and accounting departments. New approaches to castle studies are encouraging a more holistic understanding of the Edwardian castles and their context and to this end papers consider their impact on Welsh society and its princes in the thirteenth century, notably Llywelyn ab Iorwerth ( Fawr , the Great) and his grandson, Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, prince of Wales. Their symbolism and meaning through the words of Welsh poets and the mythology behind Caernarfon Castle are also examined, so too is the role of Welshmen in Edward Is armies. The wider context is considered with papers on the Edwardian towns in Wales, the baronial castles in north Wales and Edward I in Scotland and Gascony. The castles still have powerful resonance and the Minister for Heritage in the Welsh Assembly Government considers their role and presentation in Wales today and in the future. Robert Liddiard concludes that the volume 'not only takes our knowledge of the Edwardian castles forward, but also informs the study of castles in the British Isles'.
Book Synopsis A Victorian Naturalist's Odyssey by : Dr. Gilbert Clark
Download or read book A Victorian Naturalist's Odyssey written by Dr. Gilbert Clark and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-03-06 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This tale is of a scholarly man, whom I was privileged to know. He passed through the last decade of his life as I passed through my teens. He had seen the British Empire reach its zenith, a period when no value was placed on wild-life conservation. Big game hunting having been approved of in the highest echelons of society. Birds had suffered badly and amongst them in the UK was the Red Kite. By 1870 it had virtually been wiped out except for a few pairs in the fastnesses of rural Wales. Having entered Wales in 1891to joint the Botany Department of the University, Dr Salter heard of their parlous plight and in 1893 bent his shoulder to the wheel. All this gave scope for expanding a simple biography into the Life and Times of Dr Salter: hence the title Odyssey. It also allowed me to show how an interest in natural history can lead to the most unexpected places and into the company of people from all walks of life in both war and peace.

Book Synopsis These Chivalrous Brothers by : David Sunderland
Download or read book These Chivalrous Brothers written by David Sunderland and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-29 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the 1882 Palmer Sinai Expedition, a spying and terrorist mission that ended in the murder of its participants and was one of the great cause célèbre of the nineteenth century. Just before sunset on August 8th 1882 HMS Cockatrice, a small paddle wheel gunboat, appeared off the Egyptian shore. A rowing boat was lowered down its side and slowly moved towards the beach. On its arrival, six men and a teenage boy alighted. Three of the group were British, all dressed as Arabs, two were Bedouin tribesmen, one a Jew and one a Syrian. The following morning, this mismatched party set off for the desert, taking with them two boxes of dynamite and £3,000 in gold coin. Five of them were never seen again. An historical ‘who-done-it’, an adventure story, a history of the Anglo-Egyptian War and a biography of those involved in the controversy, /These Chivalrous Brothers/ explores the gulf between the Imperial ideal and reality and provides an insight into the character of the men who built the Empire. Through the biographies, it also throws light on such disparate topics as the early history of spying, spiritualism, female hysteria, biblical archaeology, various African uprisings, the Boer War and the hunt for ‘Jack the Ripper’.
