Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book features research contributions from The Abel Symposium on Statistical Analysis for High Dimensional Data, held in Nyvågar, Lofoten, Norway, in May 2014. The focus of the symposium was on statistical and machine learning methodologies specifically developed for inference in “big data” situations, with particular reference to genomic applications. The contributors, who are among the most prominent researchers on the theory of statistics for high dimensional inference, present new theories and methods, as well as challenging applications and computational solutions. Specific themes include, among others, variable selection and screening, penalised regression, sparsity, thresholding, low dimensional structures, computational challenges, non-convex situations, learning graphical models, sparse covariance and precision matrices, semi- and non-parametric formulations, multiple testing, classification, factor models, clustering, and preselection. Highlighting cutting-edge research and casting light on future research directions, the contributions will benefit graduate students and researchers in computational biology, statistics and the machine learning community.
Book Synopsis Multivariate Analysis—III by : Paruchuri R. Krishnaiah
Download or read book Multivariate Analysis—III written by Paruchuri R. Krishnaiah and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multivariate Analysis — III contains the proceedings of the Third International Symposium on Multivariate Analysis held at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, on June 19-24, 1972. The papers explore the theory and applications of multivariate analysis and cover areas such as time series and stochastic processes; distribution theory and inference; characteristic functions and characterizations; and design and analysis of experiments. Classification, modeling, and reliability are also discussed. Comprised of 27 chapters, this volume begins with an introduction to two-dimensional random fields, giving results for a class of Gaussian processes with a multidimensional time parameter. The next chapter deals with concepts of consistency in spectral estimation for multivariate time series and considers the alternative of estimating the spectral distribution function or the spectral density function. Abstract martingales and ergodic theory are also examined, along with methods for assessing multivariate normality; inference and redundant parameters; characterization of the multivariate geometric distribution; and max-min designs in the analysis of variance. This monograph will be useful to statisticians and probabilists, as well as to scientists in other disciplines who are broadly interested in multivariate analysis.
Book Synopsis Applied Multivariate Research by : Lawrence S. Meyers
Download or read book Applied Multivariate Research written by Lawrence S. Meyers and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2013 with total page 1105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For me the comprehensive nature of the text is most important - even when I don't cover topics in class students gain value by being able to read about cluster analysis or ROC analysis in enough detail that they can conduct their own analyses. Students appreciate the integration with SPSS. There is an appropriate balance of "practice" and background so that students learn what they need to know about the techniques but also learn how to implement and interpret the analysis.

Book Synopsis The Essence of Multivariate Thinking by : Lisa L. Harlow
Download or read book The Essence of Multivariate Thinking written by Lisa L. Harlow and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2005-02-17 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Essence of Multivariate Thinking is intended to make multivariate statistics more accessible to a wide audience. To encourage a more thorough understanding of multivariate methods, author Lisa Harlow suggests basic themes that run through most statistical methodology. The most pervasive theme is multiplicity. The author argues that the use of multivariate methods encourages multiple ways of investigating phenomena. She explains that widening our lens to identify multiple theories, constructs, measures, samples, methods, and time points provide greater reliability and validity in our research. Dr. Harlow then shows how these themes are applied to several multivariate methods, with the hope that this will ease understanding in the basic concepts of multivariate thinking. Formulas are kept at a minimum. The first three chapters review the core themes that run through multivariate methods. Seven different multivariate methods are then described using 10 questions that illuminate the main features, uses, multiplicity, themes, interpretations, and applications. The seven methods covered are multiple regression, analysis of covariance, multivariate analysis of variance, discriminant function analysis, logistic regression, canonical correlation, and principal components/factor analysis. The final chapter pulls together the principal themes and features charts that list common themes and how they pertain to each of the methods discussed. The Essence of Multivariate Thinking, features: A unique focus on the underlying themes that run through most multivariate methods. A dual focus on significance tests and effect sizes to encourage readers to adopt a thorough approach to assessing the significance and magnitude of their findings. A detailed example for each method to delineate how the multivariate themes apply. Tabular results from statistical analysis programs that mirror sections of the output files. A common dataset throughout the chapters to provide continuity with the variables and research questions. A CD with data, SAS program setup and output, homework exercises, and chapter lectures. This book is useful to advanced students, professionals, and researchers interested in applying multivariate methods in such fields as behavioral medicine, social, health, personality, developmental, cognitive, and industrial-organizational psychology, as well as in education and evaluation. A preliminary knowledge of basic statistics, research methods, basic algebra, and finite mathematics is recommended.
Book Synopsis Abel’s Theorem in Problems and Solutions by : V.B. Alekseev
Download or read book Abel’s Theorem in Problems and Solutions written by V.B. Alekseev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-05-31 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do formulas exist for the solution to algebraical equations in one variable of any degree like the formulas for quadratic equations? The main aim of this book is to give new geometrical proof of Abel's theorem, as proposed by Professor V.I. Arnold. The theorem states that for general algebraical equations of a degree higher than 4, there are no formulas representing roots of these equations in terms of coefficients with only arithmetic operations and radicals. A secondary, and more important aim of this book, is to acquaint the reader with two very important branches of modern mathematics: group theory and theory of functions of a complex variable. This book also has the added bonus of an extensive appendix devoted to the differential Galois theory, written by Professor A.G. Khovanskii. As this text has been written assuming no specialist prior knowledge and is composed of definitions, examples, problems and solutions, it is suitable for self-study or teaching students of mathematics, from high school to graduate.
